The Ethereal Witness

Most Warlocks can claim a powerful force of the multiverse as their patron. A powerful
Devil, a conniving Archfey, or the terrifying Great Old Ones. But your patron has taken a
different approach to growing its power. It has spectated the realms from its place in the Deep
Ethereal; a barren land of mists, wedged between the planes. Few creatures come from this
land but those do tend to become obsessed with the gathering of lore. Your patron is one of
those creatures, and it has picked you to assist it in its reaping of knowledge.
The identity of your patron is shaped by the nature of the Ether. Ethereal Witnesses tend
to be creatures who have gathered knowledge from the Ethereal plane for hundreds of years.
Some potential ideas can be found later in this document.

Ethereal Witness Expanded Spells

The Ethereal Witness can teach you new spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following
spells are added to the Warlock spell list for you.
Spell Level Spells

1st Magic Missile, Sanctuary

2nd Blur, Detect Thoughts

3rd Blink, Clairvoyance

4th [REDACTED]’s Secret chest, Freedom of Movement

5th Far Step, Legend Lore

1st: Ethereal Phase

You can see up to 60ft into the Ethereal Plane while on the material plane and vice versa. When
you expend a pact slot you may also attempt to step into the Ethereal Plane momentarily. Roll a
D6. When you roll a number equal or below your Proficiency Bonus, you phase into the Ethereal
Plane. While on the Ethereal Plane in this way, you can still be seen and interacted with by
creatures and objects on the Material Plane. You benefit from Half Cover until the start of your
next turn at which point you return from the material plane.

6th: Ghost Step

Once per short or long rest, You can blink into the Ethereal Plane as a reaction to taking
damage. You can treat yourself as resistant to that damage and teleport to a random space
1d6x5ft feet away from your current position. If this would put you in danger or force you into a
solid space you are teleported to the nearest safe space.
10th: Ether Spy
Once a week, you may summon a Creature of the Ether and request information from it. This
creature may be a ghost, phase spider, your Pact of Chain Familiar, or even your Patron
(probably not Patron). The creature may only know this information if it has learned it on the
Border Ethereal. If the information is beyond the creature’s knowledge, it may reappear to you in
1d10 days with a better answer at the DM’s discretion.
Alternatively you may request the Creature of the Ether to spy on one entity of your choice from
the Border Ethereal. The creature will follow your request for one week, during which it can
mentally relay any information it learns to you and you may see through its eyes as an action.

14th: Adopted by the Ether

Your constant interaction with the Ethereal Plane has allowed for some of its strange logic to
apply to you. You can ignore the effects of gravity as if you were on the Ethereal Plane while
moving on a surface. You can walk on walls and ceilings as if you were walking normally. While
under the effects of Ethereal Phase, you can walk through any surface as long as you don’t stop
in a solid space.
Once per day, you and up to 10 other creatures of your choice can be drawn into the Deep
Ethereal. Any travel done here only takes 10 hours and you automatically notice the presence of
any Ether Cyclones that may disrupt your travel.

Potential Patrons

● The Storyteller: A patron obsessed with the collecting of stories

and adventures from the material plan. They might be your patron for
the sole purpose of learning your stories. My personal favorite idea
for this Patron is having it be such an old Kenku that it can speak full
sentences with ease and even witness the cursing of all Kenku.
● The Mist: Formless and silent, your Patron is the mist of the
Ethereal Plane itself. This patron doesn’t have a lot to offer, but the
implications of your Patron being the Plane might be interesting
enough
● Time Child: Some of the writing about the Ethereal Plane talks
about how strange time flows there. While this is mostly referring to
traveling mechanically, it could be extended to the creature’s that live
there. A timeless plane would allow for creatures from different time
periods to meet on the same plane. Your patron could be from the
distant future, distant past, or could even be YOURSELF! (plot twist!)
