An online Expert talk

“Advancing Sustainable Forest Management: Insights from

Geospatial Technology”
by
Dr. Sudhakar Reddy Chintala,
Scientist-SG and Head of Forest Biodiversity and Ecology Division,
NRSC, ISRO, Hyderabad, Telangana
Date & Time: Friday April 19, 2024. 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. (IST) Mode of the talk: Online

Abstract: Sustainable forest management seeks to uphold economic, social, and environmental values
across all forest types for the benefit of present and future generations. Remote sensing, particularly
through Earth Observations, stands as the singular technology providing continuous, high-resolution
measures across space and time. In the context of sustainable forest management, remote sensing
serves pivotal roles in monitoring vegetation cover, identifying deforestation, and bolstering global
reforestation efforts. Near real-time satellite imagery, geospatial techniques and machine learning greatly
augment forest resource management, facilitating crucial tasks such as health assessment, biomass
estimation, land use mapping, and biodiversity assessment. However, detailed analysis of essential
biodiversity variables, including vegetation classification, assessment of vegetation community
assemblages and structure, mapping spatial variation of species-level traits, monitoring phenology, stand
height, density, biomass and conducting species distribution modeling for threatened species,
represents critical gap areas in current forest management practices. Advancements in web-based GIS
platforms and cloud computing enhance data accessibility, fostering rapid developments in geospatial
technology essential for sustainable forest management.
