This paper consists of 5 pages (Annexure A excluded).

Instructions:

(i) Scan or enter the QR-code (ea423fa1) before you start the exam. (See page 3).

(ii) Please include your student number on your exam answer script.
(iii) You are allowed to access your prescribed works and the study material. You are however not
allowed to copy verbatim from your study material. You should provide answers in your own
words. In the case of any cheating or plagiarism no mark will be allocated.
(iv) The exam can be downloaded on Wednesday 01 November at 07:45 and must be uploaded by
12:15 on Wednesday 01 November 2023. Should you complete your exam before the official
completion time, please commence the uploading of your exam answer file immediately, do not
wait for the session to conclude.
(v) The system will close at 12:15 on 01 November 2023 (South African time) and all late
submissions will be rejected. NO LATE EXAM ANSWER FILES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
(vi) We prefer that you type your exam answers and then upload your exam answer file as a single
PDF document on the myExams platform. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions
made on unofficial examinations platforms will not be marked and no opportunity will be
granted for resubmission.
(vii) The exam answer file must be uploaded as a PDF electronic document and not as a scanned
image. Do not password-protect your PDF file or uploaded as “read only” file. Incorrect file
format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered
(viii) See Annexure A at the end of the exam paper on how to upload your exam answer file on
myExams.

Additional student instructions

1. NO emailed scripts will be accepted.


2. Students are advised to preview submissions (answer scripts) to ensure legibility and that the
correct answer script file has been uploaded.

3. Students are permitted to resubmit their answer scripts should their initial submission be
unsatisfactory.
4. Incorrect file format and uncollated answer scripts will not be considered.
5. Incorrect answer scripts and/or submissions made on unofficial examinations platforms
(including the invigilator cellphone application) will not be marked and no opportunity will be
granted for resubmission.
6. A mark awarded for incomplete submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity for
resubmission will be granted.
7. A mark awarded for illegible scanned submission will be the student’s final mark. No opportunity
for resubmission will be granted.
8. Submissions will only be accepted from registered student accounts.
9. Only the last file uploaded and submitted will be marked.
10. Students who have not utilised invigilation or proctoring tools will be deemed to have
transgressed Unisa’s examination rules and will have their marks withheld. If a student is found
to have been outside the invigilator app for a total of 10 minutes during their examination
session, they will be considered to have violated Unisa's examination rules and their marks will
be withheld.
11. Students have 48 hours from the day of their examination to upload their invigilator results from
the Invigilator App. Failure to do so will result in students deemed not have participated in the
online invigilation.
12. Students must complete the online declaration of own work when submitting. Students
suspected of dishonest conduct during the examinations will be subjected to disciplinary
processes. Students may not communicate with other students, or request assistance from other
students during examinations. Plagiarism is a violation of academic integrity, and students who
do plagiarise or copy verbatim from published work will be in violation of the Policy on Academic
Integrity and the Student Disciplinary Code and may be referred to disciplinary hearing. Unisa
has a zero tolerance for plagiarism and/or any other forms of academic dishonesty.
13. Students are provided 30 minutes to submit their answer scripts after the official examination
time. Submissions made after the official examination time will be rejected by the examination
regulations and will not be marked.
14. Non-adherence to the processes for uploading examination responses will not qualify the
student for any special concessions or future assessments.
15. Queries that are beyond Unisa’s control include the following:
i. Personal network or service provider issues
ii. Load shedding/limited space on personal computer
iii. Crashed computer
iv. Using work computers that block access to myExams site (work firewall challenges)
v. Unlicensed software (eg license expires during exams)

Students experiencing the above challenges are advised to apply for an aegrotat and submit
supporting evidence within ten days of the examination session. Students will not be able to
apply for an aegrotat for a third examination opportunity

THIS QUESTION PAPER CONSISTS OF TWO SECTIONS:

Section A consists of THREE (3) essay questions. Answer any ONE (1) essay question.

Your essay must:

• be a minimum of 1000 words and a maximum of 1500 words, excluding the cover page and table
of contents
• have an Introduction, a body with applicable sub-headings, and a conclusion
• provide examples to substantiate your arguments, and to show that you understand
• provide evidence-based arguments and acknowledge sources of your information by means of
consistent and correct in-text referencing

Section B consists of FIVE (5) short-answer questions. Answer ALL FIVE (5) questions.

Your answers in this section must provide:

• a brief discussion of at least two to three paragraphs, no longer than three-quarter (3/4) of a page
• examples to substantiate your arguments, and to show that you understand
• evidence-based arguments and acknowledge sources of your information by means of
consistent and correct referencing

Use Arial 12 point font, 1.5 spacing in both sections (A&B). Your answers to both questions must be
submitted as a single document in PDF format. Please DO NOT upload your answers separately.

Create a cover page with the following information:

• Your full name


• Your student number
• The module code
• The module name
• List the essay question that you answered (for example, Question 2)
• The date of the exam

SECTION A (COMPULSORY): Answer only ONE essay question:

QUESTION 1

Discuss the relationship between participation and empowerment. Then explain how the capability approach
framework can enhance people’s participation in development.

(50 marks)

QUESTION 2

Discuss the factors that contribute to the negative health situation in the global South. Provide solutions on how
this negative health situation can be addressed.

(50 marks)

QUESTION 3

Discuss the impact of Gender-Based Violence on women’s participation in development and the role that NGOs
play in combating this pandemic.

(50 marks)

SECTION B (COMPULSORY): Answer ALL five short-essay questions:

1. Discuss the key assumptions of the neoclassical, reformist and the radical theoretical perspectives on education.
(10 marks)

2. Discuss at least five features of culture and explain how they can contribute to or impede development.
(10 marks)

3. Discuss at least five ways in which gender inequality can be addressed in communities and nationally.
(10 marks)

4. Discuss at least five benefits of the 4IR in developing countries.


(10 marks)

5. Discuss the aims and the potential benefits of the National Health Insurance (NHI) of South Africa.
(10 marks)

ANNEXURE A

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR ANSWER FILE


Take-Home (Assignment) assessments are conducted offline within a specific time period. You will
need to visit the modules exam site to download the question paper and upload your answer script
once completed. You might already be familiar with the Take-Home type of assessments as they are
the same as upload assignments.

Follow these steps to submit your exam file:

1. When ready to submit, open the Take-Home (Assignment) assessment again and click on the
Add Submission button.

2. Note the file requirements such as:


a. File size limit.
b. Number of files that can be submitted.
c. File formats allowed.
Note: MS Word documents need to be saved as PDF documents, and paper-based answers
must be scanned into a combined PDF document.

3. Check the acknowledgment checkbox and upload your answers document and then click on
the Save changes button.

4. Review your submission information regarding the status and click on your submission file link to
check if it's correct.

5. If you need to resubmit a file, you can click on the Edit Submission button.
Note: You will need to delete any existing files.
