Monoatomic ions to memorise

• Group number gives the charge of ions.

• How many charges? the number of charges on an ion formed by
a metal is equal to the group number of the metal
• the number of charges on an ion formed by a non-metal is equal to
the group number minus eight
• hydrogen forms H+ ions
To memorise
Roman numerals are used for transition metals

Ionic Compounds: Transition Metal + Non-Metal

•If the transition metal forms only one ion, then name
it normally. For example: ZnCl2 – zinc chloride

•If the transition metal forms two ions, the best way to
remember the ending is as follows:

HIC (higher charge= -ic) and LOUS (lower charge= -ous)

Modern (Stock) system:

For example:
Fe3+ is iron (III) = Ferric
Fe2+ is iron (II) = Ferrous
