COMPUTING AND HEALTHCARE

II. INTRODUCTION

In the dynamic intersection of Computing and Healthcare, the fusion of technology and
medicine is reshaping the landscape of healthcare services. Computing, broadly defined as any
goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting from, or creating computers, has become an integral
force in the healthcare sector. This integration is not merely a technological overlay; it
represents a profound transformation in how we approach, manage, and enhance healthcare
delivery.

Computing's Role in Healthcare In the realm of healthcare, computing plays a central role by
providing a foundation for various applications that significantly impact diagnostics, patient
care, and overall health outcomes. Disease diagnosis, for instance, relies heavily on computer
applications that analyze a patient's symptoms by comparing them to a database of known
diseases. This process aids medical professionals in swiftly and accurately identifying the
disease, leading to more effective and targeted treatments.

III.BODY

Computing - In a general way, Computing is defined as any goal-oriented activity requiring,

benefiting from, or creating computers.

Healthcare - It relies heavily on computer applications to provide high-quality care. For

example, disease diagnosis often involves using software that compares a patient’s symptoms
to a database of known diseases. This helps medical professionals to quickly and accurately
identify the disease.

Applications in Healthcare:

Electronic Health Records - is to consolidate a patient’s medical chart into digital documents.
They are updated patient records that can be accessed in real time by authorized users in a
digital format.

Telemedicine - The use of electronic information and communications technologies to provide

and support health care when distance separates the participants.

There are 3 common types of telemedicine, which include but not limited to:

Interactive Medicine – which allows patients and physicians to communicate in real-

time while maintaining HIPAA compliance

Store and Forward – which permits providers to share patient information with a
practitioner in another location.

Remote Patient Monitoring – which allows remote caregivers to monitor patients that
reside at home by using mobile medical devices to collect data (e.g. blood sugar or
blood pressure)

Medical Imaging - is an interdisciplinary field involving machine learning, computer vision,

image science (radiology, biomedical), and image processing. Widely used medical imaging
techniques include X-ray radiation, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI).

Digital Healthcare Solutions - refer to the application of digital technologies to address

challenges and improve various aspects of healthcare delivery, patient care, and overall health
outcomes.

Benefits:

To monitor health metrics and serve other relevant purposes, digital health technologies use
computing platforms, software, connectivity, and sensors. The handling of patients that require
chronic care management (CCM) services, such as diabetes, can be effectively aided by these
new technologies. Medical items, such as medications, devices, and biologics, are frequently
employed in this regard.

Challenges:

Digital Health have the potential to transform healthcare by addressing various challenges,
such as improving access to care, enhancing patient engagement, facilitating remote
monitoring and chronic disease management, enhancing care coordination, supporting patient
education and empowerment, enabling data-driven healthcare, and promoting population
health management.

Health Information System - refers to a system designed to manage healthcare data. This
includes systems that collect, store, manage and transmit a patient’s electronic medical record
(EMR).

Emerging technology - is a term generally used to describe a new technology, but it may also
refer to the continuing development of an existing technology.

Potential Impacts of Emerging Technologies on healthcare delivery and patient outcomes:

Artificial Intelligence - The use of algorithms and machine learning to analyze and interpret
data has transformative potential. AI can analyze medical images, identify abnormalities,
monitor patient health, assess risks, and recommend interventions.

Impact:

AI can be used to analyze medical images and identify tumors or other abnormalities. It can
also be used to monitor patient health, identify potential health risks, and recommend
appropriate interventions.

Wearable Devices - These devices are equipped with various sensors, processors, and
communication technologies, allowing them to collect data, perform computations, and
provide specific functionalities. Wearable devices have gained popularity for their ability to
enhance user experiences, monitor health and fitness, and enable convenient access to
information.

Impact:

refers to health monitoring devices worn on the body, such as the wrist, to help monitor the
wearer’s health data. These devices use biosensors to collect different data from the patient,
such as heart rate, blood pressure, sleep patterns, and activity.

IV. CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the intersection of computing and healthcare has ushered in a transformative

era, revolutionizing the delivery of medical services and patient outcomes. Computing, as a
goal-oriented activity involving computers, has become an integral part of healthcare, offering a
range of applications and solutions. This integration has not only streamlined healthcare
processes but has also enhanced diagnostics, patient care, and overall health outcomes.

These applications include, among others, Electronic Health Records (EHR), telemedicine,
medical imaging to digital health care solutions and are very characteristic of the different ways

computing technologies have been applied to address challenges in ensuring patients' well
being and improving different aspects of care delivery. Such advancements have improved
information management, made better access to care possible while improving communication
among the different healthcare stakeholders. Use of wearable devices and even positive
expectations around aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) highlight further strides that can be
expected in healthcare technology advancements. Some of these innovative solutions that
computing brings to healthcare include the ability of AIs to analyze medical images and that of
wearable devices in monitoring health metrics.

Looking forward into this dynamic intersection, clearly technology and healthcare partnership
are bringing to life a future where personalized medicine, data-driving decision making, and
significantly increased patient engagement are not just possibilities but a reality. Through
further development of emerging technologies underway, more progress is promised that will
play a significant role in offering new dimensions of enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and
overall quality of healthcare services. Essentially, the amalgamation of computing and
healthcare prefaced a transformation in our concept towards healthcare wherein a healthcare
system is expected to focus on an all-encompassing vision enabled by tech that acts as an
enabler for both patients and healthcare providers. In fact, this transforming period is featured
by a full collaboration which goes much further than just integration and indeed marks an
overall and positive change in the mode of how we care about individuals and societies all
across the globe.
