activity. At the same time,
it can provide a source of
livelihood. Hence, it does
not only fulfill one's
passions, but it also feeds
a family.

MEASURING
TOOLS
-It is about 30
centimeters long or
12 inches long which
is used for marking
straight lines.

RULER
This tool is used for
measuring and marking
short distances such as
seams, hems, and tucks.

SEAM GAUGE
This light device is used for
taking body measurement.
It is also used for drafting
patterns and altering and
laying out the pattern on
the fabric.

TAPE MEASURE

This is used for shaping
the armholes, collars, and
necklines.

FRENCH CURVE
It is used for shaping the
hip, skirt, hemline, and
other long curved lines.

HIP CURVE
It is used for drawing
perpendicular lines,
obtaining square corners,
and dividing
measurements.

TAILOR'S SQUARE OR
L-SQUARE
CUTTING
TOOLS
These have edges that look
like saws. Pinking shears
do not cut straight lines
like scissors or shears,
instead they cut a jagged
edge.

PINKING SHEARS
This is used for cutting
threads, trimming seams,
and slashing and cutting
buttonholes.

SCISSORS
It is a device for ripping
machine-stitched seams
or any machine stitch
which is to be altered.

SEAM RIPPER
This is used for cutting
fabric. The shears should
have a sharp cutting edge
to produce a straight,
smooth, and rave- free cut
edge of the cloth.

SHEARS
MARKING
TOOLS
This is used to transfer
construction marks from
the patterns to the cloth. It
is used with a tracing wheel.
It produces identical marks
on both layers of the fabric.

TRACING BOARD
It is used with or without a
dressmaker's carbon
paper to transfer pattern
marking to the cloth.

TRACING WHEEL
This is used for marking
directly on the cloth. For
better accuracy in marking,
the chalk should be
sharpened to produce thin
lines.

TAILOR’S CHALK

Often attached to pin
cushions, it is used to
polish pins and needles
that are blunt and rusty by
pushing it in and out.

EMERY BAG
These are used for hand-
sewing and for machine
stitching. For hand-sewing,
choose one that is easiest to
use.

NEEDLES
Use rustproof pins which
are fine, smooth, and
sharp. They should be
clean and free from rust.

PINS
This is used for keeping
pins and needles.

PIN CUSHION
This gadget is worn in the
middle finger of the right
hand for protection while
sewing.

THIMBLE
The type of thread depends
on the color and weight of
the cloth. A supply of
colored threads must be on
hand for marking and
basting.

THREAD
This is used for storing the
tailor's sewing tools and
supplies. This box has
compartments and helps
organize the work of the
tailor.
