B. Lesson Proper
Discuss the Sewing Tools and Equipment
 A complete set of sewing tools and equipment are presented to help the
students work faster. All tools must be appropriate in a proper order and one
must know how to use them to save time and produce the best result.
 Measuring Tools
 Tape Measure - A flexible measuring tool for taking body
measurements. The front measurement is 150 centimeters and
the back measurement is 60 inches. Dressmakers frequently
use fiberglass tape.
 Sewing Gauge - A small six-inch-long ruler with a sliding guide.
This gauge is used to check hem lines, button holes, and other
small measurements such as pleats and tucks. The gauge is
typically made of metal or plastic.
 Ruler - A clear or solid ruler measuring 12 inches or even 18
inches. It's a handy tool for measuring, drawing straight seam
lines, and cutting lines. It also helps to connect lines. A clear
ruler is also useful for marking buttonholes.
 Yardstick - A yardstick is made of smooth, shellacked hardwood
or metal. When laying out the pattern, it is used to mark
hemlines and check grainlines.
 L-square - The tailor square, also known as the "L," is used to
transfer measurements to the draft pattern. It also divides the
garment into the desired length. It has perfect squares and can
be used to draw straight lines and numbers. It can also be used
as a tape measure. It has two perpendicularly connected arms.
a. The longer arm measures twenty-four (24) inches in length.
b. The shorter arm measures fourteen (14) inches in length.
 Frence Curve - This is used to shape the depth of the neck hole
and armhole of the pattern.
 Cutting Tools
 Pinking Shears - This is commonly used for zigzagging,
scalloped edges, and seam finishes. This is used to finish
seams and raw edges, as well as to create decorative edges on
a variety of fabrics. It creates a ravel-proof edge. This is
insufficient for straight cutting.
 Cutting scissors
a. Trimming scissor - It is 3-4 inches long. It is used for
trimmings, clipping threads and snipping slashes.
b. Embroidery scissor - It has 4-5 inches finely tapered blades.
Both points are sharp for use in working with fine details in
delicate fabrics and in embroidery work.
c. Buttonhole scissor - This is intended for making buttonholes
 Thread clippers - are a small spring-loaded cutting tool that
allows you to snip threads. These clippers are only for snipping
threads and are not intended to cut fabric.
 Seam rippers - are specifically designed for ripping out stitches
from seams, either accidentally or during alterations. They
should be used with caution to avoid causing fabric damage.
 Rotary Cutter and Mat - It is an adaptation of the garment
industry's massive rotary cutter. It functions similarly to a pizza
cutter and can be used by either left or right-handed sewers.
The rotary cutter comes in a variety of sizes and blade
configurations. Work on a cutting mat when using a rotary cutter
to protect the blade and the cutting surface.
 Marking Tools
 Chalk Pencils/Dressmaker pencil - This comes in white or pastel
colors. This chalk pencil is designed for drawing fine lines on
fabric. One end has an erasing brush.
 Liquid Marking Pen - There are two kinds of liquid marking
pens. One is washable, while the other fades after 48 hours.
Those that wash out should not be used on water-stained
fabrics. Before pressing the fabric, the mark should be removed.
 Tailor's Chalk - This is necessary as a material marker. Tailor's
chalk comes in a variety of colors and is easily removed with a
brush.
 Wax chalk - This is available in black or white and is used for
woolen fabrics. Wax can be removed by pressing.
 Tracing Wheel - There are two kinds of tracing wheels: those
with serrated edges and those with smooth edges. The serrated
edge wheel creates dots on the fabric and is suitable for most
fabrics. The smooth edge wheel is best for delicate fabrics and,
unlike the serrated edge, will not pierce more delicate fabrics.
The smooth edge wheel produces a solid line.
 Dressmaker's carbon paper - also known as dressmaker's
tracing paper, is a waxed carbon paper that transfers the tracing
wheel's markings to the fabric. A tracing paper color that is close
to the color of the fabric should be chosen. Because different
brands of racing paper have different instructions, the
instructions for the specific brand purchased should be followed.
 Pinning and Sewing Tools
 Pincushion - To prevent accidents, a pincushion is used to hold
straight pins and needles while working.
 Hand Needle - Used in making temporary stitches and
buttonholes. Sizes of 7 to 10 are for general hand sewing
 Sewing Needle Threader - It aids in attaching the thread to the
needle. It is divided into two parts. The wire and the handle The
end of the wire that is not attached to the holder is folded.
Thread the needle threader's folded wire through the eye of the
sewing needle.
 Thimble - a small hard pitted cup worn for protection on the
finger that pushes the needle in sewing.
 Materials
 Fabric - The fabric is the material used to make garments. Plain
cotton fabrics, flour sacks, or catcha are the best materials for
beginners because they are the easiest to work with.
 Thread - The thread is used in the assembly or construction of
the garment's parts. Thread sizes vary. Stronger threads are
required for heavy fabrics. Threads should be the same color as
the fabric being used.
