A measuring tape is a flexible tool

used for measuring length. It is made
up of materials like fiberglass, cloth,
plastic, metal ribbon or strip. So, it is a
kind of flexible ruler also known as a
tape measure. It is marked in
centimeters and inches.

SEWING GAUGE

A sewing gauge is a handy tool for

making quick and consistent
measurements. Easy to use, it
guarantees symmetrical hems, evenly
placed buttonholes, consistent seam
allowances, and more. Typically
compact, sewing gauges are meant to
make small measurements to maintain
accuracy for a beautiful finish
RULER
A ruler can be defined as a tool or
device used to measure length and
draw straight lines. A ruler is used to
measure the length in both metric and
customary units. The rulers are
marked with standard distance in
centimeters in the top and inches in
the bottom and the intervals in the
ruler are called hash marks.

YARD STICK

A ruler is defined as a measuring tool

or device that is used to measure
length and draw straight lines. A
yardstick, on the other hand, is a
measuring tool that is 3 feet long or 3
times the size of a ruler. So, a
yardstick is a type of ruler with a fixed
length equal to 3 feet.
SHEARS
Shears are used for trimming hedges,
grass, and other gardening activities.
They used in dressmaking for cutting
fabrics. They are used for cutting
animal's fleece to make wool. Some
shears are also used to cut cooked
poultry.

TRIMMING SCISSORS

They may be used to remove

unwanted bulk or for blending out a
short or layered haircut. If you go in
too close to the scalp with thinning
scissors, you run the risk of having
short hairs that stand up rather than lie
flat. It's essential that thinning scissors
only cut the mid-length and ends of
the hair.
BUTTONHOLE SCISSORS

Buttonhole Scissors are used for

opening the buttonholes without
stretching or damaging the stitches.
This pair of scissors features an
adjustable screw so all of the
buttonholes can be cut at an even
length.

SEAM RIPPER

A seam ripper is a small handheld tool

with a handle and a sharp hook that is
used to cut through stitches in a seam.
The tip of the hook often has a small
red ball on the end which makes it
easy to see as you cut stitches. Newer
styles of seam rippers like the Kai
seam remover have tiny teeth on a
handle.
EMBROIDERY SCISSORS

Embroidery scissors are a special kind

of scissors which are used by
embroiderers. They are small, very
sharp, and are pointy. Embroiderers
use these scissors to snip threads close
to the fabric.

THREAD CLIPPER

Thread snips, also called thread

nippers, thread clippers, and thread
cutters—are small, often spring-
loaded, scissors used for trimming
threads and are easy to keep close to
your sewing machine for quick access
to trim at the end of each seam.
ROTARY CUTTER AND MAT

A rotary cutter is a tool with a very

sharp circular blade, mainly used by
patchworkers for cutting fabric with a
special quilting ruler on a self-healing
mat designed for the purpose. They
are predominantly used for cutting
straight edges of fabric.

TAILOR’S CHALK

A chalk-like material used

for marking alterations on
fabric in tailoring and
dressmaking. The marks are
brushed or washed off the
material when no longer
needed.
TRACING WHEEL

It is used to transfer markings from

sewing patterns onto fabric with or
without the use of tracing paper and
can be used to make slotted
perforations. Such markings might
include pleats, darts, buttonholes,
notches or placement lines for
appliques or pockets.

DRESSMAKER'S CARBON PAPER

Dessmaker's tracing and carbon

paper. Both a must for either
preserving your original patterns
to carrying out pattern
alterations. Use carbon paper in
conjunction with either a tracer
pen or tracing wheel to mark
your fabric or darts, hiplines,
seam allowances etc. View as
Grid List.
CHALK PENCILS/DRESSMAKER
PENCIL

Use dressmaker's marking

pencil to transfer pattern
markings directly onto
fabric. Do not make dark,
heavy marks. Remove all
marks with brush or damp
cloth.

LIQUID MARKING PEN

Liquid marking pens – used

to mark tucks, darts, pleats
and pockets. One type
disappears after about 48
hours.
WAX CHALK
Wax Tailors Chalk helps
you create clear, defined
lines with clean edges and
lasting visibility so you can
mark your fabrics with ease.
Markings made with Wax
Chalk stay until removed
and fade once you iron the
material.

PIN CUSHION

A pincushion is a small, stuffed

cushion, typically 3–5 cm across,
which is used in sewing to store pins
or needles with their heads
protruding to take hold of them
easily, collect them, and keep them
organized. Pincushions are typically
filled tightly with stuffing to hold
pins rigidly in place.
HAND NEEDLE

A sewing needle, used for hand-

sewing, is a long slender tool with a
pointed tip at one end and a hole to
hold the sewing thread. The earliest
needles were made of bone or
wood; modern needles are
manufactured from high carbon
steel wire and are nickel- or 18K
gold-plated for corrosion resistance.

SEWING NEEDLE THREADER

A needle threader is a
device for helping to put
thread through the eye of a
needle. Many kinds exist,
though a common type
combines a short length of
fine wire bent into a
diamond shape, with one
corner held by a piece of
tinplate or plastic.
L-SQUARE

L square (plural L squares)

A ruler shaped like a capital
letter L, used for creating
scaled versions of sewing
patterns.

THIMBLE

A thimble is a small pitted cup

worn on the finger that protects
it from being pricked or poked
by a needle while sewing. The
Old English word þȳmel, the
ancestor of thimble, is derived
from Old English þūma, the
ancestor of the English word
thumb.
FRENCH CURVE

A French curve is a
template usually made from
metal, wood or plastic
composed of many different
segments of the Euler spiral.
It is used in manual drafting
and in fashion design to
draw smooth curves of
varying radii.

HIP CURVE

A Hip/Form curve is a large

French curve that aids in
pattern making by providing
an elogated, curved edge for
smoothing and correcting
pattern lines.
DRAFTING TABLE

A drafting table or a drawing table

is a multi-purpose platform intended
for architecture, engineering,
creative drawing, drafting, and
sketching. The table consists of a
rigid leg-support frame with a
varying slope top for the user's
usability. Drafting tables come in a
multitude of vertical adjustments
and top sizes.

FLAT IRON

Flat Iron is a device used for

straightening hair by
pressing and pulling
sections between two heated
metal or ceramic, flat,
rectangular plates.
IRONING BOARD

An ironing board is a long

narrow board covered with
cloth on which you iron
clothes.

PRESSING CLOTH

Pressing means smoothing and

shaping garments or articles
with heat, moisture, and
pressure with an iron. Pressing
gives a smooth, well-made
look. It is a different skill than
ironing. When pressing, you
lower and lift the iron. When
ironing, you smooth out
wrinkles with a sliding
motion.
SLEEVE BOARD

A small ironing board

used for ironing sleeves.

PRESSING HAM
