Question: If you were given a chance to be a Filipino Thinker what would be the title of your
work? Do you think your work will have a relation to the social issues that we are facing now
(COVID-19)? Why?

COVID-19 and the future of education and learning

This special issue of Prospects comes out during extraordinary times, which have changed the
educational world almost beyond recognition. The whole education scene has started to look surreal:
Schools have been shutting their doors, and parents and caregivers have been scrambling to
“homeschool” their children and to look for ways to keep them engaged. Wherever possible, a stronger
engagement with remote learning has taken place. Under such shaky circumstances, retaining a sense of
normality for learners and their teachers has been crucial. Given this unprecedented closure of learning
institutions, one of the most pressing tasks facing educators is to ensure that students’ learning is
uninterrupted. Making sure that learning never stops is imperative (UNESCO 2020). Yet, focusing on the
never-stopping part alone, as if it does not affect everything else about the purpose and the value of
schooling, is rather narrow and might give the debate an air of deceptive simplicity. We also need to
make sure that learning—quality learning—happens. The task is more urgent and complicated as
education itself is already going through its own massive crisis—the global learning crisis—which is
being amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly, we had zero foresight of the many changes the
pandemic would bring to education and learning. And we hardly have any sense of the scale and range of
what is to come. Even so, there has been no shortage of speculation about what the COVID-19 pandemic
will do to change education and learning as we know them. Furthermore, the discussion has been driven
in wildly different directions by different notions of what sort of knowledge, of what sort of reality, to

Activity 2: Try This!

Directions: Imagine yourself in the situation below. Try to evaluate your personality and level of
relationship with certain people and how it is reflected in certain situations. Try to relate the idea of
kapwa with the concept of core values of Sikolohiyang Pilipno.

1. Your teacher visited you in your house. In which part of the house would you entertain your teacher?
Would you treat her formally as if you were in the classroom? Would you offer
refreshments? Justify your answer.

I would entertain my teacher in the living room. And I would treat my teacher formally. And yes, I
would offer refreshments.

2. How does pakikisama different from pakakipagkapwa

Pakikisama is all about communicating and sometimes it's not at their will, they’re just doing it for the
sake of joining. On the other hand, pakikipagkapuwa is more like you’re willing to help.

2. EXERCISES/ACTIVITIES

Directions: Answer the following question.

1. What is the difference when you describe a person as “ibang tao” or as “ibang tao”? How
do you relate this to the concept of “kapwa”?

"Ibang tao" could mean a person is referring to other people, not part of a certain group where
they belong. For example, in a family, you don't just let other people or "ibang tao" enter your
house unless it's a family member. On the other hand, the term "Kapwa" means fellow. If you
are a Filipino, you should be helping your fellowmen or your "Kapwa" filipino. To sum it up,
"ibang tao" is usually used when you are excluding someone from a particular group take for
example, your family. But that "ibang tao" could also be your "kapwa"
2. Do you agree that the indigenous concept of “kapwa” leads to an understanding of one’s
personhood? Why or why not?

Yes, it does. The concept of "kapwa" helps you understand in a more profound way who you
really are. From the culture to the values and concepts your "people" possess. It helps you
appreciate your origins.

V. Reflection

Situation: Your cousin visited you at your house. Your cousin enters your bedroom and
borrows your earphone without any permission. Do you think your cousin’s action violates
the original of familism or violates the principle of “delicadeza?”

Yes. Sometimes this is the downside of the Filipino concept of filial piety. We tend to
overuse and abuse it that it comes to a point wherein sometimes our rights as individual
people in invaded. As to the given situation, A bedroom is a private place you own, so anyone
is not allowed to go in unless given permission to. The same goes for the things that one
person owns. This privacy should be respected even by a family member.

REFLECTION

Studying social sciences gives students an understanding of the real world around

them. Students learn about places, cultures, and events around the world, what

conspired to make them the way they are and can make inferences about how the

rest of the world works. The social sciences are the fields of scholarship that study

society. “Social science" is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a

plurality of fields outside of the natural sciences. These include: anthropology,

archaeology, business administration, communication, criminology, economics,

education, government, linguistics, international relations, political science,

sociology, and, in some contexts, geography, history, law, and psychology.

Disciplines and Ideas in the Applied Social Sciences introduces students to the

disciplines and ideas that form part of applied social sciences by drawing on the

theories and principles of psychology, sociology, anthropology, and other social

sciences. The coverage of applied social science centers on social science,

counseling, social work, and communication, which are seamlessly threaded

together. This book focuses on the processes and applications of these applied

disciplines in critical development areas. It aims to empower students in

developing competencies in interacting and relating with other individuals, groups,

and communities; apply social science principles, practices, and tools in addressing

several appropriate development areas; and sharpen their analytical skills specifics

to the processes and life context where these applied disciplines are at work.
