Guide
Choosing Capella University is an online university with programs that focus on eight professional
fields for working adults seeking to make a difference in their lives and their careers.

Capella
Right now, more than 22,000 learners are pursuing their dreams at Capella—and nearly
10,000 alumni have moved much closer to theirs. We believe choosing a university is
more than deciding where you want to spend the next few years in school. It’s a decision
about how you want to spend your life.

Choosing Capella
Valuing what you bring to the table
Professional experience is worth a lot in the courseroom. Every learner
brings unique perspectives and real-world situations to the table.
Faculty members blend theory with industry practice and their own
experience. You can apply what you learn today in your work tomorrow.

We select instructors for their academic credentials and

relevant professional experience. Our faculty members
understand what adult learners need, because they’re trained
to facilitate learning in the online environment—and some
have earned degrees online themselves. A key part of their
instructional method is to encourage you to share current
workplace challenges as problem-solving opportunities
for the entire class.

“Professional experience is valued at Capella—

it’s an asset we’re encouraged to share.”

Choosing Capella

Online learning
Capella is fully online to meet the needs of working adults. You can maintain your own weekly
schedule—choosing when and where to complete assignments based on your deadlines. But don’t
confuse online flexibility with courses being easy, or learning online with being isolated. You’re
learning within a highly engaging community.

A typical week

Each week begins with new assignments or projects. Within the week, you can manage
the deadlines on your own schedule, participating in class whenever and wherever you
have an Internet connection.
Capella learners spend an average of 13 hours a week per course—reading, writing,
and interacting with instructors and classmates via courseroom discussions. Typically,
the range is from five to 20 hours per course, depending on such things as number
of credits per course, program, and the learner’s prior knowledge. Many learners check
the discussions frequently, just as they would their email.
“Online, I hear the voice of every student.
They dig deeper and ask thought-provoking
questions. They put themselves into the
discussion and really learn.”

Residencies:
Advancing skills, expanding community
Learning at an advanced level means developing skills, deepening knowledge, and becoming part
of an extended intellectual community. Residencies don’t just make this transformation possible—
they make it richer.

Entering a graduate degree program at Capella University starts you on a fulfilling

journey of intellectual, professional, and personal transformation. Residencies—
intensive, on-site learning experiences that vary in length and number—are one
highlight of many programs. A residency advances your academic experiences,
research or clinical skills, and community building—all integral to the process of
becoming a practitioner-scholar with your own MS program or a scholar-practitoner
with your doctoral program.

Depending on the graduate program, learners enroll in a specific type of residency

experience as part of the required curriculum. Each residency session occurs at
a key point in your educational development. They are required for all doctoral
specializations as well as some clinically focused master’s specializations and post-
master’s certificate programs.

Residencies are held at conference hotels in major U.S. cities. At residencies, you’ll be
part of a community of learning colleagues and faculty, participating in small and large
academic sessions, clinical skills labs, and panel discussions.
