 THE SOLUTION
Two years prior the market introduction in 2017, DEUTZ
AG acted as pilot customer and tested extensively the
AVL AMA SL™. “When the AMA SL was first presented to
us in 2015, we immediately saw its potential.” Dr. Michael
Röbel, Head of Process Technology and R&D Investments
at DEUTZ AG says.
The most obvious benefit of the new system is its foot-
print with a depth of only 30 cm, instead of 1 m, as it is
placed in the corridor in front of the test cells, basically
the work place of the testbed operator at DEUTZ AG.
Due to the concept of reducing the number of pumps
to the bare minimum, the AVL AMA SL™ is an excellent
choice regarding the lowest level of noise emissions. The
much lower heat dissipation is the result of extremely
reduced energy consumption. The temperature tolerance
of an emission measurement system is also of major
importance. With its higher operating range it also did
not show any significant temperature drift with the diurnal
temperature changes in DEUTZs facility.
THE RESULT
“AVL has done a tremendous job in realizing an intelligent
service concept.” says Dr. Röbel. All activities on the
emission bench can be done purely from the front. It is
even possible to service the analyzers within the cabinet
as they can be easily opened without tools. In case of the
CLD analyzer, the detector can be folded out and main-
tained within the cabinet. Thanks to the extra-low voltage
concept, the system is safely accessible during operation
also by personnel who are not electrically qualified as
required for high-voltage systems.
DEUTZ AG not only took over the pilot system but also
purchased on a yearly basis an AVL AMA SL™ wherever
a single stream system was sufficient for the application.
Furthermore, Dr. Röbel emphasized, “Due to the high
number of projects that we have to deal within our test
field, long-term planning is virtually impossible. The
delivery time of only 10 weeks is therefore a big plus for
the AMA SL.”

THE CHALLENGE
To be compliant with the current and upcoming emission
standards requires high investments in R&D and a lot of
know-how. The implementation of the required technol-
ogies and meeting the deadlines for implementation
of new emission limits claims tremendous efforts from
engine manufacturers. Beside facing these challenges,
the lack of space, heat dissipation and instrument noise
are big issues in this field.
