If nothing else, a stretch assignment can add bullets to beef up your resume and prepare for an HR

industry analysts, professors, influencers, subject experts, journalists and so on. Your aim is to gather
new information and insights. Find out what’s been done before, so you do not reinvent the wheel.
You are trying to understand the problem and what’s required to solve it. Talent can be stretched
both Vertically and Horizontally. In our modern workplace, it is important for employees to know

Stretch assignments also allow you to leverage skills that your role (ie. your day job) does not
leverage. For example, I had the opportunity to assist with planning a conference and it allowed me
to tap into my love for planning! I thoroughly enjoyed leading that workstream and the ability to be

should seek out assignments that are equally beneficial to us. Below are the top 10 benefits of

providing the appropriate experiences. Devising the right strategy to gain experience and build skills
can be done using a variety of assignments such as – Keep your stretch work assignments voluntary
for your engineers; stretch work should never be given to an engineer without them first asking for
it. The voluntary nature of it means that engineers can step into the role for a project they feel
comfortable with. Engineers will likely volunteer for stretch work assignments they have some
interest in and believe they can accomplish. This helps with assigning stretch work that is at the
