WHAT IS FIELD

GEOLOGY ?
FIELD GEOLOGY IS A MISSION CARRIED
OUT DIRECTLY IN THE FIELD BY
GEOLOGISTS TO OBSERVE AND STUDY
OUTCROPS, ROCKS AND STRUCTURES
IN THEIR NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
DIRECT INVESTIGATION CONCERNS
OBJECTS RANGING IN SIZE FROM A
MILLIMETER TO A KILOMETER.

KEY ELEMENTS OF FIELD
GEOLOGY

1 MAPPING

BEFORE GOING TO THE SITE, AND IN THE ABSENCE OF

EXISTING MAPS, AN ANALYSIS OF SATELLITE IMAGES
IS CARRIED OUT TO IDENTIFY THE MORPHOGEOLOGY
OF THE AREA AND LOCATE THE OPTIMAL SPOTS FOR
THE MISSION.
ONCE IN THE FIELD WITH A COMPASS, MARKING THE
POSITION OF ALL ELEMENTS RELATED TO THE STUDY
(OUTCROP LOCATION, LENGTHS, POSITION OF
COLLECTED SAMPLES AND IDENTIFIED STRUCTURES),
EVERYTHING MUST BE MAPPED AND ORIENTED.

@SAKARIYAIN
OBSERVATION

Observation is one of the main skills of

geologists. It provides an indispensable
description and interpretation of the
geological context.
We observe the formation of different layers
and their arrangement in time and space.
We observe sedimentary structures that
indicate the environment, such as bedding,
ripples, and fossils...

SAMPLE COLLECTION

The aim is to select rock samples for

laboratory examination and petrographic
analysis; and collecting fossils and rocks for
macroscopic studies,
However, good sampling is subject to the
following conditions: samples must be taken
from the formation and not from fragments,
and it must not destroy the whole rock; it is
therefore recommended to use a geologist's
hammer.

MEASUREMENTS

Precise measurements are taken in the

field; outcrop measurements, slope
inclinations, dip determination, etc.
are carried out directly in the field
using a compass clinometer.

BUILDING A
GEOLOGICAL SECTION

Representation of geological sections in a

vertical plane, traced according to the state
of the outcrops (thickness and continuity).
Facies changes are represented by a
conventional color change.

EVALUATING A
STRATIGRAPHIC LOG

Stratigraphic log Represented as a

column with the oldest layers at the
base and the most recent at the top.
The stratigraphic log describes the
chronological filling of formations, with
each layer represented by its equivalent
observed lithology; fossils and
sedimentary structures also featured.
