CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, the ability to assemble and

disassemble computer systems has become an increasingly valuable skill for

students aspiring to enter the technology industry. Computer System Servicing

(CSS) 2, a specialized course offered at VNHS SHS, equips students with

knowledge and practical skills to understand, maintain, and troubleshoot

computer hardware and software components. As these students prepare to

transition into the workforce, it is crucial to explore the experiences and

perspectives in developing these essential skills.

Examining CSS 2 students learning experiences can yield important

information about the tools, resources, and support systems that work best to

develop student’s computer system servicing expertise to address any gaps or

difficulties these students face, specific interventions and support systems can

be developed with an understanding of the challenges and hurdles these

students face. It is possible to ensure that the educational content is in line

with the changing demands of technology industry and to build curricula by

gaining insight into the viewpoints of students regarding the relevance,

importance, and application of CSS skills.

The result of this study can be used to inform future interactions of the

CSS 2 curriculum, which will better equip students to meet the needs of the
digital workforce. By conducting this study, we aim to contribute do the

existing body of research on CSS education, providing a deeper understanding

of the student experience and informing the future students in this area. That

insights gathered can inform educational practices, curriculum development

and support the successful transition of this students into the technology

sector, where their CSS skills will be highly valued.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

One of the studies is by Jansen and Wilkins (2020) which examines the

challenges faced by high school teachers in effectively teaching CSS and

proposes strategies to overcome these challenges. The findings from this study

offer valuable insights into the learning experiences and perspectives of

students in understanding and applying CSS concepts. The study highlights

the importance of addressing those specific challenges encountered by high

school students, such us the abstract nature of CSS and the need for hands-on

learning opportunities.

Another relevant of the study is by Lee and Park (2018), which

emphasizes the significance of teaching CSS fundamentals in web development

education. The researchers argue that a strong understanding of CSS concepts

and their practical application is crucial for students’ success in web

development. The findings from study can inform the curriculum and teaching

approaches used in VNHS senior high school course.

Chen and Huang (2021) explore the effectiveness and interactive

instructional strategies such as hands-on activities and collaborative learning,

in improving students understanding and application inform the teaching

method s and learning experiences in the VNHS SHS CSS 2 curses, ask they

suggest that in interactive and engaging approaches can enhance engaging and

learning outcomes.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This qualitative study aims to investigate the understanding,

experiences, and perspectives of CSS 2 (Computer Systems Servicing 2)

students in VNHS Senior High School during the 2023-2024 academic year

regarding the process of assembling and disassembling computer systems.

Specifically, the study seeks to address the following research questions:

1. What is the level of understanding of CSS 2 students in the following areas:

a. Identification and function of computer hardware components

b. Procedures for assembling a computer system.

c. Procedures for disassembling a computer system.

2. What are the experiences of CSS 2 students during the process of:

a. Assembling a computer system

b. Disassembling a computer system

3. What are the perspectives of CSS 2 students on the importance and

relevance of the skills acquired in assembling and disassembling computer

systems?

4. What challenges or difficulties do the CSS 2 students encounter during the

assembly and disassembly processes, and how do they overcome them?

5. How do the understanding, experiences, and perspectives of CSS 2 students

differ based on their prior knowledge, learning styles, or other demographic

factors (e.g., gender, academic performance)? Rephrase this question.

As much as possible the questions are answerable by the participants and the

information needed is available.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this qualitative study on the understanding,

experiences, and perspectives of CSS 2 students in assembling and

disassembling computer systems at VNHS Senior High School lies in its

potential to improve the quality of teaching and learning, support the

development of practical skills in computer systems servicing, and contribute

to the overall advancement of technical and vocational education. The impact

of this study on the population being examined, the CSS 2 students at VNHS

Senior High School, can be far-reaching. The findings can help educators and
curriculum developers gain a deeper understanding of the challenges, needs,

and areas of growth experienced by these students during the hands-on

components of their CSS 2 training. This knowledge can then be utilized to

tailor instructional approaches, develop more relevant and engaging learning

materials, and provide targeted support to ensure the students’ successful

acquisition of essential computer systems servicing skills.

Furthermore, the contribution of this study to the public in general can

be significant. By shedding light on the experiences and perspectives of CSS 2

students, the research can help raise awareness and understanding among the

broader community about the Importance and complexities involved in

computer systems servicing. The insights gained from this research can benefit

a wide range of stakeholders, from students and educators to the general

public and industry professionals.
