It's a warm Sunday afternoon. Shaun

wakes up with a smile on his face. He will
be going to the park today with his
Mommy Ella and Mommy Maria.

On their way to the park, Shaun saw a

balloon vendor. He excitedly points at the
red balloon. Mommy Maria buys him one
and Shaun could not hide his smile.

“Thank you, mommy!” Shaun says.

“You’re always welcome. Are you happy,
Shaun?”
“What is happy, mom?”
“Happy is what you are feeling right now.
You are smiling, so you must be happy.”
“I feel happy when you bought this
balloon.”
“I felt happy when I watch my favorite
show.”
“When I play outside, I feel happy!”
“Mommy Maria and Mommy Ella take
good care of me and it makes me feel
happy!”
“That’s right. That feeling is happiness.”

When they reach the park, Shaun runs to

play with his balloon. He runs and jumps,
and the balloon follows him around.
Shaun thinks his balloon is a good friend
but he accidentally lets go of it. He sees it
fly across the sky. He reaches for it but it's
too high.

When he returns with tears in his eyes,

Mommy Maria and Mommy Ella give him a
hug.
Mommy Ella says, "It's okay to feel sad."
Shaun asks, "What is sad?"
Mommy Maria explains, "It is what you felt
when your balloon flew away. It is what
you are feeling right now."
Shaun says, "I feel sad."
"When I broke my toy, I felt sad.”
“When the cake shop closed, I felt sad.”
“When I missed my favorite show, I felt
sad."
"Today I lost my balloon and I feel sad,"
Shaun says.

A beautiful tune is playing in the park.

Shaun looks around to see an ice cream
truck across them.
With pennies in his hand, he comes to the
vendor and asks for a chocolate ice
cream. But the vendor tells him that
there’s no chocolate ice cream left. Shaun
returns to his moms with both hands
balled into a fist.

Mommy Maria asks, “Shaun, you look

angry. What happened?”
“I don’t feel really good, mom. Am I
angry?”
Mommy Ella holds his hand, “Well, you
feel angry when you feel like something is
unfair, especially when it is about
something that is important to you.”
“Mommy Ella, Mommy Maria, I think I feel
angry.”
“When my friend broke my favorite
crayon, I felt angry.”
“When strangers give my mommies bad
looks, I feel angry.”
“When people hurt other people, I feel
angry.”
“It’s unfair that I cannot eat my favorite
chocolate ice cream and it made me feel
angry.”
Mommy Maria gives him a warm smile,
“Your mom and I understand. How about
we try strawberry ice cream today?”
Shaun giggles, “Okay! Mommies, I think I
don’t feel angry anymore.”

After a whole day spent at the park,

Shaun, Mommy Ella and Mommy Maria go
home.

Shaun sits on the couch. He feels happy,

but it is a different feeling. This feeling is
warmer and it lasts longer than happiness.
He feels it every day for his moms.

Mommy Ella and Mommy Maria sit beside

him and say, “We love you, Shaun.”
“What is love, mommies?”
“Love is what you are feeling right now.”
“When I watch my favorite show, I feel
love.”
“When I am with grandpa and grandma, I
feel love.”
“When I first saw Toby, I felt love.”
“Every day, when I’m with Mommy Ella
and Mommy Maria, I feel love.”
“That’s right. What you are feeling is love.
You must remember, Shaun, that it’s okay
to feel different feelings. Good feelings or
bad feelings are okay. Your emotions are
valid, so feel it and do not be ashamed of
it.” says Mommy Ella.

Shaun kept the words of Mommy Ella in

his mind. He goes to bed knowing that it is
okay to show his emotions. He knows that
when he wakes up, he will feel new and
familiar emotions all over again, good or
bad. But that does not scare him, because
all emotions are okay.
