pyre,a scrollofpapyruswasfound.1

tary of some verses attributedto Orpheus. The scroll dates from
between340 and 320 BC2and the textit contains,fromabout 400 BC.
The poemthatis beingcommentedon mustbe priorto 500 BC.3
AllthatremainsoftheOrphicpoemis a seriesofquotations,moreor
less extensive.In a paperpublishedinKernos,4 I undertooka philological
reconstruction ofthe poem.Now mypurposeis to studythe segments
ofthe reconstructed textin depth.I willdo it froma literary,
religious,
and philosophicperspective, withtheintentionofregaininga coherent
meaningof the whole. The fragmentary and incompletecharacterof
the textwill not allow as much progressin the analysisas would be
desirable;however,I thinkwe mustattemptto explainthetextwe have.
I willexamine theliterallyquotedfragments,
as wellas thepartsof
thecommentary thattellus somethingaboutthecontentofthetext
thecommentator readbutdidnotquote.Thetextandthenumbering

It is possible,too, thatthe poem continuedand dealt withone or

them.However,thereis an argumentthat makes me preferthe idea
