State

Part 3: Lesson Objective

The students will be able to identify the elements of a story and be encouraged to create their own character with traits
such as the name, their interests, and wants after learning from the scholastic news instruction and completing the
reading checkpoint.

Part 4: Assessment Plan:

I can assess learning by checking for engagement, participation, and comprehension. I can gage these
elements of my assessments through student responses to questions about the lesson such as asking about
the setting and the plot of a story. This will tell me how well students are comprehending the material. More
specifically at the beginning of the lesson I will make sure all students’ eyes and ears are directed towards me
and I will ask them to please raise their hand to speak. During the lesson I will make formative assessments
to make sure students are staying engaged and understanding. I had students turn and talk with a partner
and then tell me what their partners answer was. At the end of the lesson, I will let the students work on their
checkpoint questionnaire in groups. As students do this I will be there to help and answer any questions as
they try to complete the in-class assignment to the best of their ability.

Part 5: Teaching and Learning Sequence/Procedures

The first step is to read the Scholastic News to the students using the promethean board, next I will ask specific questions
about elements of a story, then I will pass out the reading check point where they can use the scholastic news to complete
the questions regarding title, setting, and plot, then students will begin to get creative by creating their own character for
a story they will write the following week. This includes illustrating their character, naming them, and choosing
character traits.

Materials:
Scholastic News “Lets Cook Up a Story”- Describes how to create a story by explaining, characters(traits), setting, plot
(key events), and prompting students to create their own story. On the backside there is a bar graph with questions
relating to popular stories.
“Parts of a Book”-Use the word bank to fill in the blanks representing Front cover, title, author, back cover, spine, and
illustrator of a book. The backside has a book cover students can illustrate on with questions regarding a character they
imagine where they answer what their characters name is, their interests, what the character has, and what the character
wants.
“Calendar Skills”- Fill in missing numbers on March 2024 calendar and answer questions about holidays and days of the
week.

Part 6: Behavior Management (give behavior expectations to the class)

I plan on setting expectations such as explaining the plan of the lesson and how students can help me properly complete
this lesson. I plan on making formative assessments throughout my instruction. For example, “Give me a thumbs up if
you can hear me.” Or “blank can give themselves a dot for following instruction.” Or “one two three eyes on me”. I will
also use students’ names to show others they should be paying attention. As students worked on their reading checkpoint
worksheet I walked around to make sure students were staying on task.

Part 7: Instructional Materials and Resources

My cooperative teacher helped me come up with many instructional ideas by printing out multiple different
worksheets we can choose from that students will work on after the Scholastic News has been read. She also
suggested using the video on scholastic news website that goes more into depth on the elements of a story
that I can show the students to start out with.

Part 8: Closure
I will wrap up the lesson by having students go over their reading checkpoint questionnaire with a partner or in
groups. I will also thank all or any specific students for the amount of participation, respect, and hard work
shown during instruction and discussion. If the lesson went as planned I also will have every student give
themselves a “dot point” on their achievement cards for being respectful of the time we spent together.

Commentary: Think about and plan for What ifs. These are thoughts of things that might cause you to change your
lesson ex. The technology is unavailable during your lesson How will you compensate or modify your lesson to handle it

My lesson included the use of a promethean board however we had hard copies of the scholastic reader as
well. If there was an issue with the promethean board than I would need to come up with my own guided
instruction to ensure comprehension of elements of a story.
