ABSTRACT

"In response to the pressing need for accessible information, especially for the
visually impaired, this work presents a pioneering smart reader system utilizing
Raspberry Pi technology. The system integrates a camera interfaced with
Raspberry Pi to capture both printed and handwritten text. Using Optical
Character Recognition (OCR) algorithms, this system swiftly translates images into
machine-encoded text.
Implemented through Python programming on the Raspberry Pi, this system
features a real-time conversion of captured text into audible speech. The
processed text is displayed visually and then transformed into audio output via the
Raspberry Pi's audio port, ensuring accessibility through headphones or speakers.
The efficiency of this conversion, taking mere milliseconds, aids visually impaired
individuals in accessing textual content effectively.
Addressing the global need for accessibility, especially considering the 1.3 billion
people affected by visual impairment, this system stands as a pivotal advancement.
It not only serves as a smart reader but also contributes to real-time OCR-based
text-to-speech conversion, promising a more inclusive and accessible future."

METHODOLOGY

The block diagram of the setup consists mainly of two input parts. The first part is the
text to speech conversion and the next is where the camera module converts the
scanned image file into speech. The entire project is implemented on the Raspberry Pi
3 board which consists of USB ports, GPIO pins for input and output, a dedicated Pi
camera for scans, a micro SD card slot and finally the headphone which will give the
output.
