I have known this girl online for many months. We live in the same town, so I asked her (1) ........... . She

7. Reading – Read the text below on online dating. Tick (✔) T for true and F for false.

What they never told you about online dating

I’m sure you’ve heard of the dangers of “online

dating”. And yes, there are dangerous people out
there so you need to be careful. True, you should
not give out personal information to people you only
know online. If you meet an online friend IRL, you
should meet during the day in a public place where
there are many other people around. But if you fol-
low these simple rules, you can be reasonably safe.
The greatest danger of all however, is one that you
will almost never hear about. The real danger of on-
line dating is Love Illusion.
What on earth is Love Illusion? It is falling in love
with someone who you have never met. As stupid as
it sounds, it is very possible to fall in love online. Peo-
ple do it all the time. They fall in love with chat room persons, with IM* conversations, with emails. They
fall in love with a picture taken 19 years ago, they fall in love with that voice at the end of the phone
line. It is much more dangerous than it sounds because it emotionally isolates people. Because you are
now “in love” with someone who writes all those nice words, you cut out other real life possibilities. On-
line relationships can be very socially isolating, as the person “in love” becomes more and more attached
to the Internet, and doesn’t take part in “normal” social activities. Many people prefer communicating at
a safe distance online to communicating in the big scary world at large.
Ideally of course, this period is a short one, and people meet (with the safety rules in mind) and decide
if they are in love or not. That’s the ideal situation, but quite often people meet and fall in love on the
Internet with partners from other countries. Then they may be in a situation where meeting is not pos-
sible. Because the emotions are completely real, even though the situation is virtual, people are in a state
of Love Illusion sometimes for many years. And that, my friends, is the real danger of online dating.

8. Writing – Read the email from an English friend and reply to it. Make sure you answer all
the questions.

Hi,

I’m writing to tell you that I’ve decided to spend my holiday in Hungary this
year. I’m planning to come over for two weeks in August. J
Can you give me some advice? Which cities should I visit? What are the most
famous sights? Anything I shouldn’t miss? I’d like to go trekking. Where should
I go? I’m going to bring my tent with me. Do you know any nice camping sites? I
would like to meet up with you, too. Would that be possible? When in August is
good for you?

Many thanks and a big hug,

XX Max
