Chapter 11-A

THREADED JOINT

Dr. Pham Minh Tuan

Introduction
 Thread is a ridge wrapped around a cylinder or cone in the form of
a helix, with the former being called a straight or tapered thread.
 Form (cross-section) of thread used in joints is rectangular to
increase friction.
 Threaded joint can be disassembled and reused.
 Threaded joint is used to mount two or many parts together.

Geometrical parameters of thread

- d : Major diameter
- d1 : Minor diameter
- d2 : Mean diameter
- p : Pitch
- ph : Lead
- H : Thread height
Classification
 Right-Handed & Left-Handed threads:

 Internal & External threads:

 Single-Start & Multi-Start threads:

 Straight & tapered

threads:
Classification
 Metric thread
(international) has
form of an
equilateral triangle,
angle of 60°.
 English thread has
form of an isosceles
triangle, tip angle
of 55°.
 Metric thread is
more durable due to
large cross-section,
Inch thread is
tighter due to small
slope angle.

M : Symbol of metric/International thread.

d : Major diameter.
p : Pitch (only written for threads with fine pitches)
L : Shank length, measured from the cap surface to the end
of screw.
 If the thread is left hand, write
“LH” or “ren trái” at the last of the
dimension. In commercial products,
a small groove can be made on
screw cap or nut to represent left
hand thread.

Thread drawing
- Major dia.: thick line; Minor dia.: thin line.
- Distance between major & minor dia. = 0,85d.
- Limit of thread length: thick line.
- Thread runout: can be drawn or ignored.

Thread joint drawing
 External thread is priority.
 In sections, cross hatching must be drawn to major dia. of thread.
