REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMN - A column or pillar made of reinforced concrete in architecture and
structural engineering is a structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the structure
above to other structural elements below. In other words, a column is a compression member.
1) TIED COLUMN
2) SPIRAL COLUMN

3) COMBINATION
4) COMPOSITE COLUMN
C) minimum column size = 300 mm x 300 mm for tied column and 340 mm Ø for circular column
D) minimum diameter for ties/spirals = 10 mm diameter ; but if vertical bars used > 28 mm diameter use 12 mm
diameter

E) minimum no. and diameter of vertical bars = 4-16 mm diameter for tied co. and 6-16 mm diameter for
spiral column
F) clear cover: 1) must be greater or equal to 40 mm; 2) must be greater or equal to 1.5 times bar diameter;
G) spacing of ties/spirals: for spacing of ties must be greater or equal to 1) 48 times diameter of ties;
2) 16 times main diameter; 3) least dimension.
For spacing of spirals; 1) must be greater or equal to 35 mm; 2) must be less than or equal to 75
mm; 3) must be less than 1/6 diameter of the core
PROBLEM 1.
Given: D = 1500 kN
L = 979.08 kN
Size = 390 mm x 790 mm
fc’ = 21 MPa
fy = 275 MPa
Required:
1) Pg
2) How many 20 mm ϕ will be used
3) What is the spacing of 10 mm ϕ ties
As
Pg =
Ag
S1 = 48 ϴt = 48 (10) = 480 mm
S2 = 16 ϴm = 16 (20) = 320 mm ADOPT adopt the least value
S3 = least dimension = 390 mm
