LECTURE 15: REINFORCED CONCRETE FOOTING

FOUNDATION - In engineering and architecture, a foundation is the element of a structure which connects it to
the ground, and transfers loads from the structure to the ground. Foundations are generally considered either
shallow or deep.

FOOTING - A footing is a foundation made up of reinforced concrete.

A) TYPES OF REINFORCED CONCRETE FOOTING

1) shallow footing

a) independent or isolated footing

b) wall footing

c) combined footing

(c) Strap or cantilever footing

D) mat footing

e) footing on piles

2) deep footing - by the use of caisson or cofferdam

3) others like retaining wall

A) minimum depth above bottom reinforcement = 150 mm for footing on soil

= 300 mm for footing on piles

PROBLEM 1.
GIVEN: D = 500 kN

L = 180 kN

qa = 300 kPa

REQUIRED: Dimension of a square footing using 10% footing weight

P
σ =
A
PT
qa = P = 500 + 180 = 680 kN
Af
Wf = 0.10 (680) = 68 kN

∴ D = 568 kN

PT
Af =
qa

(568+180)
B2 =
300
B = 1.58 m say 1.6 m x 1.6 m
