LECTURE READING 5: REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB

PARTS OF A STRUCTURE

1) Superstructure
a) slab/stair - larga masa/hagdanan
b) beam - biga
c) column - haligue
d) wall - pader
2) Substructure
e) Footing - pundasyon

SLAB

TYPES OF SLAB
1) ONE-WAY SLAB

short span S
M = modular ratio = =
long span L

___________________________________________________________________________

If the slab measures 3 m x 8 m, the short span is 3 m and the long span is 8m
S 3
Therefore, m = = = 0.375 ¿ 0.50 so the 3 m x 8 m is one-way slab
L 8

One-way slab is like a glass table wherein its supports is only at two sides

The main reinforcement of one-way slab is only in one direction

The reinforcement in the other direction is not a main bar and it is called temperature bars

2) TWO-WAY SLAB

Two-way slab is like a glass table wherein all sides has supports

Two-way slab has main reinforcement in two directions

3) FLAT PLATE SLAB - slab supported by columns

Flat plate slab is like a table with vertical supports but without horizontal support.

Actual example of flat plate slab

4) FLAT SLAB - slab supported by column with drop panel

ONE-WAY SLAB
LIMITATIONS
short span S
1) m = modular ratio = =
long span L

m ¿ 0.50, it is one-way slab

m ¿ 0.50, it is two-way slab

2) thickness - refer to Table 407.3.1.1, page 4-43 NSCP 2015

minimum thickness = 90 mm

3) Minimum size of main reinforcement = 12 mm ϕ

4) Minimum concrete cover = 20 mm, page 4-136 NSCP 2015
5) Maximum spacing of main reinforcement = 3t or 450 mm whichever is lesser, section 407.7.2.3, page
4-45 NSCP 2015, 3t means 3 times the thickness of slab
6) Ideal minimum spacing = 100 mm
7) Minimum ratio of temperature reinforcement to gross concrete area

As t
K = where K = ratio of temperature reinforcement to gross concrete area
bt
Ast = area of temperature reinforcement

b = width

t = thickness of slab

From table 424.4.3.2, page 4-159 NSCP 2015

If fy ¿ 420 MPa, k = 0.0020

0.0018(420)
If fy ≥ 420 MPa, k = or 0.0014 whichever is greater
fy
8) Minimum size of temperature bars = 10 mm ϕ
9) Maximum spacing of temperature reinforcement = 5t or 450 mm, whichever is lesser, section 424.4.3.3,
