Conflict in the movie

The conflict in the film "Green Book" is an external conflict included in the type of man vs society. The
neighborhoods that Don Shirley visited always looked down on him and rejected him simply because
Don Shirley is a black person. Firstly, when Don Shirley was given a dirty, ill-advised piano. When Don
Shirley wanted to perform in Hanover, Indiana, the officer in charge prepared a piano that was not
following the contract agreement. Even they just set up a piano full of trash. The officer did that
because he thought the performers were black people who were considered lowly. Secondly, Don
Shirley was not allowed to use the toilet. When Don Shirley was touring in Raleigh, Carolina, he wanted
to use the toilet in the building where he was touring, but the white people did not give permission.
Don Shirley was advised to use the small dirty toilet outside the building. Even when Don Shirley said
he was better off using the toilet in the motel where he was staying, the white man agreed and said
he would wait for Don Shirley to return to the building.

Characterization of Don Shirley

1. Arrogant

Figure 1 : Don Shirley refuses to play the throw

Don Shirley has a slightly arrogant nature. He feels that he is superior to other black people. It can
be seen from the scene above when Don Shirley refuses the invitation to play throwing by black
people in the motel he lives in, so people speculate that Don Shirley does not want to join because
he is afraid that his expensive clothes will get dirty.

2. Taciturn

Figure 2 : Don Shirley only talks about what needs to be said.

Don Shirley is a person who prefers silence to talk to other people, let alone talking about
unimportant things. He only spoke when he had something to say. Don also did not really like
getting together to chat with other people. Even Tony said that he often saw Don sitting silent
through the car window, but he knew that Don's mind was busy.

Figure 3 : Tony refuses to speak politely

Tony is a stubborn person. He always has his answer when advised by Don Shirley, it can be seen
from the scene above when Don Shirley asks Tony to speak politely without using harsh words, but
Tony refuses because he thought if other people do not like the way he talks, then that person can
leave

2. Rough

Figure 4 : Tony beats up a police officer

Before working with Don Shirley, Tony worked as a bodyguard at a nightclub in New York, so it is
no wonder Tony has a rough nature. It can be seen from the scene above that when the police
officer mocked him by saying that it was natural for Tony to work with Don because he was of
Negro descent, he immediately punched the police officer
