WHAT IS PHONICS?

WHAT IS PHONICS?

Phonics is a reading method that allows a child to learn the sounds

of letters by developing an understanding of how these sounds are

used individually, in groups, and in whole words.

MONTESSORI PHONETICS
Phonetic instruction is the foundational

stepping stone in a Montessori Language Arts

program.

Since the English language doesn’t always

follow predictable rules, the phonics system

helps young readers develop logic, reasoning

and analysis skills. It is like a Google map.

PHONEMES & GRAPHEMES
Phonemes are the smallest unit of sound

within a word. Grapheme

Graphemes are the letters or written

symbols used to represent phonemes. A

grapheme can be a single letter or a

combination of letters, and different

graphemes can form the same sound.

PHONEME CLASSIFICATION
Consonants- Consonant sounds are produced by

restricting the airflow.

Vowels- Vowel sounds allow the air to flow freely, causing

the chin to drop noticeably.

Phonograms or digraphs - A phonogram is a grapheme i.e.

one or more written characters which represent a phoneme

(speech sound)

Encoding Vs Decoding

Writing is an encoding process.

To write a word, your child needs to segment the word into its
individual speech sounds, find the written symbols (letters) that
represent those sounds, and then build the word by putting the
letters in a row.

Reading is a decoding process.

To read a word, your child needs to recall the speech sound that
each letter represents, say each sound, and blend them in the
right order to hear the whole word and understand its meaning.
