Puberty
It is a long process that
includes many physical and
emotional changes.
It is the time when your body
changes from a child’s body
to an early adult body.
Puberty
- height and muscle mass
increase
- appearance of body hair,
increase in muscle strength,
increase in perspiration, and
deepening of the voice.
What causes these changes?
Changes occur during puberty
because of hormones. These
hormones were “asleep” when you
were younger but now they are
awaken and have causes these
changes in your body.
Emotional and Social Changes
This a change in your life where you will
discover who you are and who you will be in
the future.
It is a transition phase. Your interests become
different. You start to appreciate the opposite
gender forming crushes and that suddenly you
are paying attention to your looks.
Puberty related health myths
and misconceptions
- This is a huge stage for girls.
- One of the most important
signs that a girl is turning a
woman.
- Usually starts between the
ages 8 and 13
Menstruation
- shedding of the uterine lining
- it comes out in a form of blood
- regular menstruation flow- three
days
- for adolescence- range from five to
seven days
Myths and Conception about
menstruation
1. You should not wash your hair during
monthly period.
2. Exercise is bad for you when you have your
monthly period.
3. You lose a lot of blood during menstruation;
therefore you should lie down and rest a lot.
Circumcision
- Surgical procedure, which removes the foreskin
of the male organ.
- in Philippines, it symbolizes that the boy is ready
for manhood.
- in some cultures, they do not believe in
circumcision, while others differ on what age a
boy should be circumcised (infants- during
adolescence)
Myths and misconceptions about
circumcision
1. Circumcision improves hygiene.
2. All men are circumcised. Not true. Almost 80%
of men around the world are not circumcised. It
is not widely practice in some countries like
Canada and Europe.
3. Men who are circumcised are prone to
infection. This is not medically supported.

4. Babies do not feel pain during circumcision.
Not true. They are very sensitive to pain.
Nocturnal emissions
- Colloquially known as wet dreams.
- when a male releases semen (the fluid that
contains sperm)
- When you reach puberty, your reproductive
system starts to wake up and produces hormone
that releases sperm. This is a normal stage of
puberty for boys and it is impossible to control.
Puberty Related Health Issues and
Concerns
1. Nutritional Issues - while boys generally
increase appetite, girls tend to eat less as they
watch their figure. This can lead to anemia.
2. Acne – inflammation of oil glands and hair
follicles commonly found on the face, neck, back,
and chest.
3. Postural problems – this involves the size and
shape of adolescents. Teenagers may tend to
feel very conscious of their height and weight,
which leads to improper posture.
4. Body odor – while teenagers are very active
doing sports and physical activities, sweat glands
are also working double time. That is why
teenagers sweat profusely
5. Oral health concerns – occurs due to poor
dental hygiene. This include tooth decay, halitosis
(bad breath) and gingivitis.
6. Menstrual related concerns
There are different kinds of menstrual problems
that can occur during puberty
a. Pre-Menstrual Syndrome( PMS) has a wide
variety of symptoms.
- cravings, fatigue, irritability, mood swings,
depression, and sensitivity of breast.
b. Dysmenorrhea – menstrual cramps, occurs
during the first or second day of menstruation.
c. Menorrhagia – also known as hypermenorrhea
Prolonged menstrual periods which can last for
more than a week
