Stages of Growth and Development

Infancy
– This stage occurs from birth to 2 or 3 years of age.

- INFANCY (0-1) – the most marked growth in humans occurs compared to any to any other
stage. It is during this stage babies triple their weight.
- TODDLER (1-3 yrs. Old) – the growth slows down but the body still gains in mass and length.

Childhood
- CHILDHOOD (4-5 yrs.Old) – rapid growth is still occuring
- MILD CHILDHOOD (6-10yrs, Old) – in this there is a stabilizing period in which a uniform
relationship between bone and tissue growth and development occurs. This establishes an important
base for motor skills.
Puberty
-PUBERTY (10-15 yrs. Old) – puberty occurs when the pituitary gland secretes hormones that cause
the sex organs to develop and occurs slightly earlier in females.

-ADOLESCENCE (11-18 yrs. Old) – during this stage body adjust to rapid changes experienced in
puberty and this is the time of major psychological changes.

Adulthood
- ADULTHOOD (18 and Above) – by this time most of the bodies’ growth has taken place and many
more changes will occur as adults continue to age which are mainly caused by external factors.

What is PUBERTY?
-Puberty is the start of adolescence, which brings Physical and Emotional changes. This is the time
when males and females are physically able to reproduce. During this period, secondary characteristics

Remember: the process of Maturity in girls is affected by hereditary, diet, health
habits, and health status. Due to this differences, girls should not compare bodies with
other girls of their age.
Male Body Physical Changes
(MALE)

1. Height increases with an average of 4.1

2. Weight increases due to increased muscle
development
3. Growth of body hair in pubic area,
underarms, face and more on legs
4. Muscles become stronger
5. Vocal cords get thicker, longer, and voice
deepens
6. Increased numbers of red blood cells
7. More active sweat and oil glands, and
body odor changes
8. Acnes may develop
9. Some develop small and temporary breast
tissues
10. Reproductive system begins to work

Remember: the process of Maturity in boys is affected by hereditary, diet, health


habits, and health status. Due to this differences, boys should not compare bodies with
other boys of their age.
