MAED – EDM

TASK 2

1. From the discussed philosophical foundations of education, what is your personal

philosophy in education?
From the discussed philosophical foundations of education, my personal philosophy in education
would be Existentialism. “Why am I here?” , “Why do I exist?”, “What is the purpose of my
life?”, and “What is my essence?” – all of these questions will lead to a deeper understanding of
oneself. I choose Existentialism as my philosophy because it matches my beliefs and life
principles. I believe that all people are created to make a choice, and that choice will determine
the kind of path a man may take. A learner will find that wisdom is from within, from knowing
and understanding the purpose of his/her existence as well as the truth. I believe that all learners
are free to explore, learn, progress, and develop their own unique understanding of life.

2. As a teacher, how did you reflect your philosophy in education in your own classroom?
As a person, I always observe people, situations, places, and things around me. Even inside the
classroom, as a teacher, I always observe everything that catches my attention. This is how I
reflect on how I can better serve and teach. By answering the question “What is the purpose of
my life?”, I believe that I exist with a purpose. And that is how I want to live; I want to live
according to God’s purpose.

3. If you are to choose between Realism and Idealism, which one will you choose? Explain
your answer.
If I were to choose between Realism and Idealism, I would choose Idealism. Realism is like
being more logical and practical, therefore, I prefer Idealism which is being flexible, being
creative, and visionary. Realism is a philosophy that assumes that there is a real external world
that can be recognized. Realists concern much more about logic and practical. While Idealism is
a philosophy which concerns with finding and knowing the truth. Idealists believe in the truth as
well as in God who is the source of all knowledge. Since I am deeply rooted in seeking God and
knowing Him more, I find myself on the side of the Idealists whose principles are identical to
mine.

4. If you are to choose among Progressivism, Behaviorism, Existentialism, Essentialism,

and Pragmatism, which one will you choose? Explain your answer.
If I am to choose between Progressivism, Behaviorism, Existentialism, Essentialism, and
Pragmatism, of course, I will still choose Existentialism. As according to Oxford, existentialism
is a philosophical theory or approach which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as
a free and responsible agent determining their own development through acts of the will. I
believe that man is given choices. Each time a man chooses, he is learning from the consequence
of his actions. I believe that each philosophy in education has its advantages and disadvantages.
However, I believe that Existentialism fits me more than any of the above-stated philosophies in
education. As its principles constitute the same as mine.
