5 plots from short story “Two Soldiers” by William Faulkner

1. Exposition
During World War II, the story is set in rural Mississippi. Pete, the main character,
is a young child who resides with his family. His brother is a soldier who enlists in
the military.

2. Rising action
Pete, who is underage, is resolved to enlist with his brother in the army. Pete decides
to enlist and flee his house. He shows his innocence and resolve as he gets ready for
his journey.

3. Climax
Pete leaves for Memphis in order to enlist in the military. He faces a number of
difficulties and setbacks along the road, such as hunger and tiredness. When Pete
gets to Memphis and realises the truth about the war and the repercussions of his
actions, the action reaches its climax.

4. Falling action
The authorities send Pete back home after he is too old to enlist in the army. He
must deal with disappointment and the possibility that his hopes of fighting
alongside his brother will not be realised.

5. Resolution
Pete goes back to his family, who are waiting for him. He accepts his position as a
civilian during the war and finds comfort in being reunited with his family despite
being unable to enlist in the army. Pete vows at the end of the story to do everything
in his power from home to help his brother and the war effort.
