2.7 Design and operation

The function of the tool is to record signal decay in the time domain in receiver
induction coils after emitting a magnetic pulse along the pipe under survey. Ring
currents induced in the pipe body generate an EMF in receiver coils. Signal decay
characteristics are defined by pipe defects, such as longitudinal fractures or wall
thickness reduction due to corrosion because such defects create additional
resistance in an induction current circuit.

Pulse-4 has one magnetic induction sensor with the length optimized to detect
defects in the third and fourth barriers. The tool is equipped with a magnetic field
detector, accelerometer, and an internal low-accuracy temperature sensor.

Power supply is provided through the common single-line Indigo bus which also
serves as a data exchange link. BAT05.00.00.000 Indigo BAT battery pack
combined with the toolstring is used as a memory-mode power source, to which
BAT05.20.00.000 Indigo Modem Adapter is connected to provide communication
with PC (See Fig. 4). When the tool is in maintenance the USB adapter provides
power supply to the toolstring from an additional AC/DC power supply.

The tool can record data both in memory and wireline modes, transferring data to
surface station and simultaneously saving data to internal memory

3. SETTING UP PC TO WORK WITH

TOOLS

INDIGO Suite software intended to support Indigo type tool product line (Pulse,
Navigator, Hex, PT, Chorus etc.) and some other tools that are not part of this
product line (DMPT, SMPT, Micro-T).

The procedures described below are to be performed on a new PC only and will not
be required to be repeated in future.

3.1 Virtual port driver installation and system setup

Pulse-4 is connected to PC trough a USB adapter which creates a virtual COM port
interface. This interface is supported by FTDI driver:
(http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm).

To install the driver:

• Download zip file containing the latest driver version for Windows.
• Extract file contents into a separate directory.
• Connect BAT05.20.00.000 Indigo Modem Adapter to PC USB port. An icon and
a “new hardware found” message will appear in the alert window.
• If the driver has not been previously installed on your PC, you will be offered to
find this driver in Internet or install the driver from a designated location. Select
installation from a designated location and click the folder that contains archive
files. If the driver is already installed this step will be skipped. The system can
also find the driver in Internet all by itself without any additional prompts.
• The OS service will finalize driver installation and put out a message in the
notification area showing the name and number of a new COM port. Remember
this number. Every time a new adapter is connected, a new virtual port will be
created.
• In case no message showing the port number appears, go to Start => Control
panel => Device manager => Ports (COM & LPT) menu and double-click to open
the list and adjust port settings. USB serial port (COM xx) should be on the list.
If the port number is under 16, you can leave it as it is, otherwise, change it for
a smaller number. To do so: Double-click to select this port line and Port

INDIGO Suite application. Only basic operations with the tool to be performed in the
process of logging are described in this Manual.

4.1 Safety requirements

Listed below are the regulatory safety documents adopted in TGT and to be followed
during operations:

• Interbranch rules on labor (occupational) safety in operation of electricity

generating equipment: POT R М–016 –2001, RD 153–34.0–03.150–00 in effect
since 01.07.2001;
• Regulations for Operation of Consumer Electrical Installations, in effect since
01.07.2003;
• Collection of standard instructions on work safety in fitting and assembly
operations: RD 153-34.0-03.299-2001, in effect since 01.01.2002;

on the Company premises;
Operations must be performed in compliance with requirements of the above
regulations. This particular type of work does not adversely affect humans or the
environment.

4.2 Visual inspection

After the tool has been taken out of the shipping container, it needs to be visually
inspected for any damages. The surfaces should be free from dents. Remove plastic
protective caps from the tool. Check visually if rubber O-rings are in place and make
sure they are in good condition. Rubber rings should not have any shears, burrs, or
cuts. Replace rings, if necessary. Any through-holes or fractures are considered as
unacceptable defects. If any defects have been found, a decision about further tool
serviceability will be made by the manufacturer. Deformation (bending) of body parts
or thread connections makes the tool unfit for any further use in logging operations.

4.3 First commissioning

Once INDIGO Suite is installed, it should to be checked, configured. The tool should
be connected to PC via BAT05.20.00.000 Indigo Modem Adapter. Sequence of

5. LOGGING PROCEDURE
This Section describes Pulse-4 preparation and logging procedure. Preparation
procedure is to be carried out prior to logging at well site, after task and targets have
been defined.

5.1 Pre-operational safety measures

TOI R-112-07-95 Standard Labour Safety Instructions for Operations Conducted at
Pump Stations of Oil Product Supply Companies must be followed during tool
operation (Russia).

In other countries local rules and safety requirements shall be identified and met
prior to any well operations.

To prevent tool failure, it should be run only in wells with known maximum
temperatures and pressures. Working parameters should not exceed tool ratings.

5.2 Battery use

A new battery package is required for each measurement run of the total duration
up to 48 hours at working temperatures under 150 oC. One pack of five ER-32615
cells should be used

Standard cell pack are supplied as 5-cell batteries enclosed in a common polymer
tube. The battery is installed into the module so that its positive contact faces the
connectors and is clamped on the negative side with a spring-mounted clip.

5.3 Cyclogram creating

Connect adapter to the tool and AC/DC power supply unit to adapter connector.
Connect USB cable from PC to adapter connector. Green LED should light up on
adapter. Cyclogram (measurement task) may include many intervals (their quantity
and duration are limited by tool memory capacity). On each interval, data are
recorded under a standard tool scenario. At Indigo Suite program start, the task is
downloaded from tool memory and displayed in the main window. The task can also
be downloaded by clicking Download (Cyclogram group – Fig. 5).

For more efficient memory and battery use or job specifics, the measurement task
can be divided into several intervals with pauses between them. To add a new
interval, click button. If On/Off box is unchecked a for this interval, a pause
corresponding to Duration set value will be held, otherwise, measurement will
continue for the specified duration period.

5.4 Memory clearing

There are no special actions to initiate memory clearing. Memory will be cleared
when a new task(cyclogram) is written into the tool and clearing operation progress
bar will be shown.

5.5 Logging equipment

The following typical list of items is used in the Pulse logging process:

5.5.1 Pulse-4 tool checked and prepared as it is described in 5.2-5.3.

5.5.2 Battery module with cells installed.
5.5.3 Centralisers with crossovers required for connection to battery module
and tool. Centraliser plugs.
19 EMP101.00.00.000RE

5.5.4 Logging unit with a control device for running the tool into the wellbore
at specified speed.
5.5.5 Depth panel (gauge) with time correlation function.
5.5.6 Laptop PC with INDIGO Suite installed and adaptor connected.

5.6 Logging speed selection

It is essential to maintain a stable logging speed during Pulse survey. The logging
speed during data acquisition depends on logging conditions, magnetisation of the
environment and centralisation of the tool.

Local casing/tubing magnetization associated with different technical-related factors

may cause a major problem during data interpretation. In this case, the problem
intervals should be marked off by operators during the main logging run. In order to
mitigate these factors, it is recommended to run control repeat logging passes within
the problem intervals at different speeds, for instance, at a speed twice lower than
the main logging speed. In this case, the anomalies caused by magnetised sections
of casing will change sharply in amplitude (as the speed drops, the amplitude will
attenuate) in contrast to the anomalies associated with some defects that do not
change in amplitude.

5.7 Logging procedure and data readout

Sequence of operations:

5.7.1 Perform tool string assembly with battery module and centralisers;
5.7.2 Connect the tool (toolstring) to adapter;
5.7.3 Start INDIGO Suite. Tool information and current task (cyclogram)
stored in the memory will be displayed in the main window;
5.7.4 Create (edit) a cyclogram required (see 5.3);
5.7.5 Write cyclogram into the tool – click Program button (Cyclogram group
– Fig. 5);
5.7.6 Perform tool functionality test (see 4.3);
5.7.7 Click Start button to run cyclogram execution. System log field will
show a message that the tool has been successful synchronised at
current time and tool start time will be displayed;
5.7.8 Disconnect adapter cable from the tool (toolstring);
5.7.9 Check the tool is work using a magnetic field indicator (see 4.4);
5.7.10 Perform well logging operations including RIH and POOH;
5.7.11 After tool pulling out connect the tool (toolstring) to adapter;
5.7.12 Start INDIGO Suite and check current tool status. If the tools status is
displayed as “Not Available”, perform scan tool one more time by
clicking Scan button on the toolbar. If the status does not change, it
would mean that a failure has occurred. In this case, reconnect BAT
module or use another adapter (or connection wires set) and then try
to connect one more time. If the status reads as “Work”, stop tool by
clicking Stop button (it might take a few seconds) and the status
should change to “Idle”;
5.7.13 Start data readout from tool memory by clicking Download button.
Select a folder where *.DR5 data file is to be saved. Adapter LED
should be blinking red and data download progress bar displayed in
the bottom part of the window. After the readout has finished, data
