BSME 1 – A

1. Based on Jen's video and on Markus and Kitayama's research,

a. how is the West different from the East in terms of their perception about the self?

- Eastern and Western perspectives about self-differ in various ways. In Eastern

perspective, the self is and interdependent self or the “flexi self” they focused on their place
in the society and the concept of self is often seen as an illusion or as something transient.
The emphasis is on interconnectedness, impermanence, and the idea that the self is not a
fixed entity but rather a collection of ever-changing components. In contrast, Western
perspectives on self, particularly in individualistic societies, often emphasize the uniqueness
and autonomy of the individual. There is a focus on self-expression, personal achievement,
and the development of a distinct identity separate from others. It's important to note that
these are generalizations, and there is diversity of thought within both Eastern and Western
traditions.

b. does the Philippines adopt an independent or an interdependent culture? Why do you say
so? Explain your answer by giving concrete examples.
- The Philippines adopt both the independent and interdependent culture about the
self, Because the people in the Philippines have and being practiced the independent
and interdependent perspective of the ourselves like for example the Filipino people
always help and takes care of their family and Filipino also wants to express the
individual rights and uniqueness.
2. If you look closely in your experiences throughout your life,

a. would you say that you have an independent or interdependent sense of self? Why do
you say so? Cite personal experience(s) that can support your answer.

- Yes, I can say that I have and independent and interdependent sense of myself
because I emphasize my relationships to others, my similarities to others and my
duties on the society like how I treat my family and on how they treat me as part of
there family. Sometimes I compare myself to my siblings or other family member.
And to my independent sense of myself, when that time that we are making a lantern,
I suggested ways to make it based on my knowledge and my skills.
b. what role(s) do you play in the lives of the people around you and how does this explain
the concept of multiple selves?
- Each of one of us have multiple roles that we play in the lives of other people
around us and it helps us developing our multiple selves, because everyone of us has
different roles to do even if it for ourselves or to other people.
