The Importance of Reading
Reading books is regarded as an activity that benefits mind and brain. When we compare
the life of people who read and those who don’t, we can see the difference between them.
People who don’t have a reading habit most likely are imprisoned in their own space. They
have limited connection and knowledge of what’s happening outside their little worlds. They
might not be good at conversing with people outside their environment. This situation feels
like prison, and there is no escape. Thus, a reading habit is important for human beings.
There are some reasons why we should read.
Firstly, reading can develop critical thinking skills. Nowadays, this skill is important as it is
teaching people the way to make the best possible decisions while considering the pros and
cons, as well as other aspects of topics or issues. By reading a lot of books, readers will
acquire a lot of information that will be useful for later time. For example, someone who
likes reading mystery books can sharpen their minds through seeking the clues or
foreshadowing happenings and trying to guess the twists and turns of the story. On the other
hand, someone who likes non – fiction books might be able to expand their thinking process
and build definitive arguments.
Secondly, readers can build their self – confidence through reading. The research found
that about 20% people who read for 30 minutes a week, are likely to have greater life
satisfaction, the other 21% readers are less likely to have feelings of depression, and 10%will
have good self-esteem over those who don’t read. Apparently, the knowledge people get
from reading will affect on how they see the world, therefore, they will have better
confidence and wisdom on how to deal with life problems.
Lastly, readers will expand their horizons and perceptions of things. They will not know
and learn about other cultures and places. Books allow readers to travel and see things they
have never seen before. When we read fiction books, we are transported into different
realms where our imagination is purely based on the author’s image.
To conclude, a reading habit can make readers feel happier with themselves and they also
get many benefits to nurture their mind and soul.
