Giving Your Diet a Helping Hand

These days, a lot of people feel the need to give their body extra vitamins. Having been available since the
mid-20th century, these are very common in some people’s diets. Some people take them because of a
medical problem while others need them because they don’t get enough nutrition from their normal diet. For
example, people (31) _____ don’t eat met products may need to take vitamin B12.
Some people, (32) _____, take vitamins simply as part of a healthy lifestyle. They believe that taking
vitamins will improve their health. One thing’s for sure: when we don’t consume enough vitamins, our
bodies experience problems. For example, a lack of Vitamin D or calcium can make our bones weak. Also,
too little Vitamin A can lead to serious eye problems. Therefore, taking a multivitamin (one that includes a

Dear Suzy,
How are things? I’ve got my own vlog now and I mainly post videos about how to follow a healthy lifestyle.
For example, in some of my videos, I (31) _____- how to cook healthy dishes. In others, I show the correct
way to do mini-workouts at home. So far, I have got over 1,000 followers from all over the world!
I really want to help my subscribers, though, so I’m always trying to think of interesting topics for my
videos. Last week, having had a great idea, I set myself a challenge: to run for 30 minutes for 30 days! (32)
_____, each morning, I go for a run and then I post a video about it in the afternoon.
As you know, I’m quite sporty, so I run quite often anyway, but this challenge has been very difficult for me.
This morning, after I went for my sixth run, I really wanted to give (33) _____ the challenge. I wasn’t feeling

Dear Caleb,
How are you doing? Thanks for your email. I’m sorry that you feel upset that you’ve put on weight. The
same thing happened to me last year, (31) _____ here’s some advice that worked for me.
Firstly, you should try swapping unhealthy snacks for healthier ones. You don’t have to give up your
favourite snack. You just need to make sure you have it rarely. For example, you can swap crisps or biscuits
for fruit or vegetables. Choose a superfood snack such as blueberries, avocado, almonds or a little bit of dark
chocolate instead. It’s bittersweet but it’s both delicious and nutritious. These healthier snacks are higher in
vitamins and minerals than crisps and biscuits, and they are lower in calories, too. It was difficult for me at
the beginning, but I love these foods now!
Secondly, make sure you drink plenty of water each day. Not only is it very good (32) _____ the body, but it
also stops you feeling hungry. Often, when we feel hungry, it’s our body telling us we need more water.
Drinking lots of it can reduce weight (33) _____.
Finally, it’s a great idea to do daily exercise. Experts recommend (34) _____ at least 60 minutes each day.
But if that seems like too much, you can start off with smaller amounts and do more over time. You don’t
have to go to the gym to workout, though, you can play sports, go swimming at the pool or beach, or even
walk the dog. All of these activities will help you stay active and help you lose some weight.
So, eat healthier snacks, drink lots of water and be active as this will help you lose some weight and feel
better. (35) _____ positive! I know you can do this.
Let me know how it goes,
Mike

Maya’s Blog
Hi everyone! Last weekend, I went to the beach with my friends and we had a great time playing volleyball
and swimming in the sea, 31) _______ unfortunately I got sunburnt. Fortunately, it wasn’t really
serious. So today I want to talk about ways to avoid and treat sunburn.
Of course the best way to not have to deal with sunburn in the first place is to not get it. You must always
wear a good suncream and make sure you keep applying it every couple of hours or after swimming.
You 32) _______ go in the sun during the hottest hours of the day, for example between 11am-3pm. Finally,
you should try to wear a cotton T-shirt and a hat to protect your head and skin 33) _______ the sun.
In case you do get sunburn like I did, there are some home 34) _______ you can try such as putting some
yoghurt on the sunburn. This can help cool the skin down and stop it from drying out. In order to get its full
benefits, you can do it more than once. Another idea is to take an oatmeal bath. You can add some oatmeal to
a bath of warm water and sit in it and soak for a while. The oatmeal can help reduce the redness and swelling
of the skin. Finally, another idea to help cool down sunburn is to use cucumber. You can blend it up to make
a paste and apply it to the skin. Cucumber can also act like a painkiller which helps make your skin feel less
sore. All three of these simple treatments really helped me feel better! You don’t have to try all of 35)
_______, though. I just thought I should give various options.
Have you tried any home remedies for sunburn before? Let me know in the comments.

Happy Walking
There is a popular saying: always buy a good pair of shoes and a good bed, because if you are not in one, you
are in the other! There are certainly a lot of benefits to the body from sleeping in a good bed, but footwear
plays an important role in a healthy lifestyle, too. Unfortunately though, most of the shoes we wear
nowadays cause us a lot of problems.
According to Daniel Lieberman of Harvard University, modern shoes protect our feet far too well. For
example, most trainers are very comfortable and make walking and running easier. Not needing to work as
much, our feet become weak, making us more at risk of foot injuries like ankle sprains.
But footwear doesn’t just affect our feet. Shoes with high heels, including women’s high heels, and trainers
with bigger heels, put our body out of its natural position. They push our upper body forward, which puts a
lot of pressure on our neck, hips and knees, often causing long-lasting pain.
According to Lieberman, the best solution is to wear minimalist shoes. These are shoes made from softer
materials, meaning our feet have to work harder. Also, the heel is at the same height as the toe, so wearing
them is like going barefoot. Beginners need to be careful, though. Our feet need time to get used to this type
of shoe. So, wear them for short walks at first. After a while, though, you can hike and even run with
minimalist shoes – and your feet will never feel better!

The Correct Way to Breathe

Health experts often encourage us to focus on how we eat and move in order to get healthy. However,
something they often don’t mention is how we breathe. Recent research proves something that a lot of Asian
cultures have known for centuries: one of the keys to a healthy lifestyle is nasal breathing - breathing through
the nose.
When we breathe through our mouths, air goes quickly to our lungs, the part of the body that gets oxygen
into our blood. There are times when you might think this speed is useful – for example, when we need extra
oxygen in our blood to work our muscles while we’re doing sports or physical work that demands a lot of
effort. Scientific research, though, doesn’t support this.
In the first place, the air we breathe through our mouths often contains air pollution or other things that can
make us sick. Luckily, our noses are able to block a lot of these. Also, our bodies release a gas called nasal
nitric oxide when we breathe through the nose. This gas, produced in the body, makes the blood vessels that
carry oxygen to our lungs wider. So, our lungs get more oxygen from breathing through the nose – even
though we usually breathe more slowly through our noses than our mouths!
There isn’t much information on nasal breathing in medical textbooks, but a doctor could suggest some nasal
breathing exercises and tell you how to do them properly and how often you should practise them. You can
also find various exercises online. However, you had better not try anything unless you check with a doctor
first.

One of the keys to a healthy lifestyle is avoiding illnesses and diseases. One of the best ways to do this is by
keeping yourself clean and this includes washing your hands regularly. Surprisingly, people haven’t always
understood the importance of hand-washing, though.
In the 1840s, Ignaz Semmelweis, a Hungarian doctor, suggested doctors in his hospital should wash their
hands before seeing patients. He noticed that many patients were getting sick and dying after being seen by
doctors. However, patients cared for by nurses remained well. The reason? Doctors were performing
surgeries without washing their hands afterwards, then moving on to other patients.
Today, thankfully, we fully understand why hand-washing is important. For example, when people with
colds or the flu cough or sneeze, they can pass the illness on by way of surfaces, like door handles and tables.
Then, if we touch these surfaces, the cold or flu is more likely to get pass into our bodies when we eat with
our hands or when we touch our eyes, mouth or nose.
Washing our hands can destroy some illnesses, but it’s essential to use soap which kills most diseases spread
in this way. Soap needs at least 20 seconds to do its work, though, so remember to wash your hands for the
same length that it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice. So the way to a healthier life can be as easy as
ABC – just get washing your hands.

A Gift from the Bees

Honey comes from our tiny friend, the bee. People use it around the world for a lot of different reasons.
Some people call it ‘liquid gold’ because it has so many amazing properties. It can be a natural sweetener for
food as an alternative to sugar, a medicine or even a beauty product for your skin.
Honey is a natural remedy people can use at home when they have a cold or the flu. Honey and lemon is a
popular combination for those feeling unwell, too, since honey can help a variety of illnesses by reducing
swelling and the lemon contains vitamin C which helps boost the immune system.
A lot of people also use honey to treat a cough. In fact, Pennsylvania State University carried out a study on
of 105 children which showed that a little honey worked just as well as cough medicine in reducing night-
time coughing, showing that it really does have huge benefits.
In addition, honey has anti-bacterial properties - this means that no bacteria or germs can grow inside it. It
can be used on the skin to help clear up bacterial skin infections, or even to help heal burns and sunburn
whilst lowering the risk of infection.
As a beauty treatment, honey can be used to clean skin and stop it becoming dry. Some people mix it with

Hay fever
It’s always nice when the cold winter ends and the spring begins – unless you suffer from hay fever that is.
Hay fever is when people react badly to pollen – a powder from grass, trees and plants. There are over 10
million people in the UK alone who suffer from hay fever and while most of them only experience
symptoms in the spring and summer, some people experience it at other times of the year, too depending on
which type of pollen they react to.
When the wind blows, it picks up pollen from the plants and carries it around in the air and, for people with
hay fever, this can cause a lot of different symptoms such as red, swollen eyes, a runny nose, sneezing, a sore
throat and even headaches. The symptoms may be similar to those of a cold, but hay fever happens because
the body’s immune system reacts too strongly to the pollen.
While there is nothing we can do to stop people having hay fever, there are medicines that help reduce the
symptoms. However, they can sometimes make you feel tired and so some people prefer to try natural
remedies instead. For example, you can add mushrooms to your diet to provide nutrition and boost your
immune system. You can eat fruit or drink fruit juices high in vitamin C such as oranges or lemons to reduce
the immune system’s response to the pollen.
These natural remedies are cheap, easy to prepare and make getting through spring and summer with hay
fever easier. So if you suffer from hay fever, but think that natural remedies are not your cup of tea, then
maybe you should think again. Why don’t you give them a try and see for yourself?
