The subject of honour is one that
needs so much study and attention
especially in the world we live in, many
cultures have seen their practice of
honour wane down with the
consistent emphasis on individuality
and independent mindedness that
comes with the developed world, but
as Christians our understanding of
honour cannot be based on the
prevailing culture in a civilised world
but rather it must be based on God's
word, and a proper nonbiased
understanding of God's word. Hence
this article will take a proper look into
God's word to examine the Christian
culture of honour and how it ought to
be practiced in EVERY of our
relationship.

The Practice of Honour
Honour must be practiced across all
levels of relationship else there's no
true Christian honour
The practice of Honour amongst
brethren
Rom 12:9-10 KJV 9 Let love be without
dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil;
cleave to that which is good. 10 Be
kindly affectioned one to another with
brotherly love; in honour preferring
one another;
Paul instructs the church to honour
one another, the word use for
PREFERRING is a word that shows
deference, that's letting another take
the lead, it says this is what honour will
cause us to do, it won't be ME-FIRST, it
will be MY BROTHER- FIRST, with such
understanding there can be practice
of love.
Peters puts it this way
1Pe 2:17 KJV Honour all men. Love the
brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the
king.
Honour ALL, No one is exempted from
our honour, as long as they're part of
the brotherhood they deserve our
honour, we may be richer, more
influential, educated etc but we will
honour them still.
Why?
Remember we said Honour is spiritual
recognition!
We recognise they're the temple of
God - 1 cor 6:19, 3:16.
We recognise they're sons of God - 1
John 3:1, Gal 3:26 ,Rom 8:15-16.
We recognise we are the family of God
- Eph 3:15.
We recognise their ministry to the
body - Rom 12:3, Eph 4:16, Col 2:19.
We recognise what we do to them we
do to Christ - Rom 8:12, Matt 25:40.
These and more, when we recognise
the spiritual value of the saints we will
walk in honour towards them, we will
esteem them highly, this honour will
shield our heart from offence towards
them, honour for ALL SAINTS is
actually the basis from which honour
flows in other specific relationships, if
this is lacking then there cannot be
true honour in other relationship, it
will be at best hypocrisy.
For example, in marital relationship
the wife is told to SUBMIT to the
husband and the Husband to LOVE
the wife (Ephesians 5:22-25), yet he
had earlier said as saints they should
walk in love (Eph 5:2) and also submit
one to another (Eph 5:21), so you see in
their general practice of love and
submission, they'll now practice it
specifically in marital union. When we
fail in this general practice of honour
to all saints we fail in the specific
practice of honour or at best become
hypocritical. So whether it's in marital
union or to our Pastors or to those we
lead, we'll show honour because we've
learnt the true practice of Honour to all
Saints.
WHAT WILL HONOUR DO?
Honour will esteem the other person
first (Romans 12:9-11,Phil 2:1-4)
Honour is never selfish, rather it will
always seek the good of the other
person, when we walk in honour we
are not self centered, rather we seek
the other person's wellbeing just as
Christ did for us (Rom 15:1-5), this
honour is the wisdom of
God(James3:17) demonstrated in our
conduct.
Honour will produce generosity and
forgiveness
Remember we have seen that
Christian love cannot be practiced
where there is no honour. ( Rom 12:9-11,
1 Pet 2:17), and love is demonstrated in
generosity. If we esteem the other
person highly and seek their
wellbeing we will be generous to their
needs and this also is part of our
honour walk.

hospitality.
In Honour also we will forgive the
faults of others (Col 3:13, Eph 4;32)
Peter shows us Love covers a
multitude of sins( 1 Pet 4:8), this isn't
promoting sinful actions of the
brethren but rather it's following the
example of Christ towards our own
sins, there can be no f ruitful
relationship without the practice of
forgiveness, even for folks who are
overtaken in a fault, it says to RESTORE
in meekness (Gal 6:1).
Where there is no generosity and
forgiveness there can be no true
practice of honour. When we
demonstrate honour towards the
saints we honour Christ and recieve of
His ministry at work through the
saints else we shortchanged ourselves
from functioning effectively in the
body and dishonour our Lord Jesus
Christ.
The Practice of Honour towards our
Leaders
The scriptures is replete with
examples of God leading Men through
men, to lead the Children of Israel, he
sent Moses, to Israel he sent prophets
like Elijah, Israel had judges also, Men
have always been God's method and
will forever be, to save us God became
a man even. The scriptures we have
today were written by men inspired of
God, these men weren't perfect in
their actions, yet they remain God's
method, the Apostles were all men, so
we must recognise these men to
whom God has given grace for our
sakes.
Our spiritual growth are committed to
men (Eph 4:11-16), it is as we recieve the
ministry of these men that we grow
spiritually, it is by their ministry we
know God. Scriptures teach us to
honour such men.
1Th 5:12-13 KJV 12 And we beseech you,
brethren, to know them which labour
among you, and are over you in the
Lord, and admonish you; 13 And to
esteem them very highly in love for
their work's sake. And be at peace
among yourselves.
Esteem, very, highly... These are words
that show honour in very clear terms

will never make a mistake, rather

labour among you! In Word and
doctrine. And this is for the work sake!
So ministers of the Gospel, especially
those who labour over us are to be
highly esteemed by us. We must not
treat what is sacred as common, they’r
sacred and are God's gift to us. On this
we can learn from Aaron and Miraim
( N u m b e r s 1 2 ) , a l s o f r o m Ko r a h
(Numbers 12), God has never sided
with dishonour towards men he has
placed in authority over us. When you
see a man who treats ministers with
disbonour maybe cos of their faults or
doctrine, you see a fellow who'll
scarcely fulfill God's plan, at best he
will fulfill his own plans.
Remember we said earlier honour is
practiced in the love walk, so as we
honour our leaders, we esteem them
highly we will also be generous to
them. The phillipian church
exemplified this to Paul (Phil 4)
They are worthy of our material gifts
(Gal 6:6, 1 Cor 9:11-15), giving to
ministers isn't doing them some
favour but rather showing honour for
their ministry towards us, we
demonstrate our honour to ministers
by giving to them. They're worthy of
this double honour, it's a debt we owe
them( 1 Tim 5:17).
We are also to obey our leaders, we
demonstrate honour by being
obedient to their instructions (Heb
13:17, Phil 2: 12). As we see in Hebrews
13, this is for our own good, it will profit
us to obey our Pastors and leaders.
As we walk in honour towards our
pastors and leaders we are walking in
honour towards God and we receive
effectively of their ministry towards
us.
No man can walk in God's plan
effectively whilst not walking in
Honour.
IMPORTANT WORDS TO NOTE-
Our honour for the siants and for
ministers of the Gospel as treated in
this article will inform our honour in
other specific relationships, such as
marital relationships as we have seen,
and also for the local church which is
the community of fellow saints.
A man who honours an unbeliever cos
of his wealth or fame and dishonours a
believer who isn't as famours or as
wealthy has his recognition all wrong.
It's important regularly we do an
honour check in our relationships
Cost of dishonour
Dishonour is not without a cost,
Naaman would have remained
crippled if he despised the advice of a
common slave
Miriam the prophetess would be
leprose at her rebuke of Moses
Korah and his gang lost their lives
David would have been the first king
to kill a king in Saul
Jesus, even his own kinfolks will
remain sick cos they despise him
The list goes endless, many despise
men God sent to them cos they didn't
appear so
A brother will lay sick and even die cos
he didn't receive the ministry of his kid
brother who's a saint, too proud he
was to ask for a prayer
Dishonour has a cost to it, may we
never be found in the web of
dishonour
HONOUR CHECK-
Am I generous to my leaders and other
saints?
Am I dealing with people based on
their faults?
Do I recognise the ministry of the
saints?
Do I speak highly of others and
minsiters?

Do I put others first or love for self

guides me!

Don't forget as believers we have the

ability to do the word, we can walk in
honour towards all men and in all our
relationships

DEVOTED
“But we will give ourselves
continually to prayer, and to the
ministry of the word.”
— Acts 6:4 (KJV)
The word 'Devoted' is used yes as a
verb but it has a Noun to it. It's a
state of a person, a thing. Certain
sacrifices in the times of the law
were devoted to God. Even persons.
Like Samuel, Samson. These men
from their birth were separated and
given to the Lord. Now, this is not
just an old testament thing. In short
in the old testament, lives devoted
to this extreme were seen as special
people and sacrifices.
In the New testament, our lives are
sweet smelling sacrifices to God.
The life in which we live now is no
longer ours. For our old man was
crucified and now Christ is Our life!.
We are not choosing to give God our
lives. No!. It's that our life now is
Christ!.
Our life is a living sacrifice unto God.
Oh! Such sweet devotion to be
given to the cause of the Lord. To
have the Fathers heart as your
dream. It's not a heavy badge to
wear. Some make it look as if to
follow CHRIST is burdensome.
Christ said 'take my yoke...it's light.
It's easy'. He's the one living through
you to walk in all his will for your life.
Samuel at an early age knew he was
given unto God. From a child he
ministered unto God. Remember
Acts 13 when people came together
to pray and minister unto God. It's
not a strange thing in the new
testament.
Acts 6:4 said we will give ourselves
to prayer and to the ministry of the
word. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
t h e re i s t h e PR E AC H I N G a n d
declaring of the word of God. The
Apostle did not say, we will just do
the word and prayer. It said we will
be given!. To do and be given to
something, are totally different. To
be given is to have a cause course
through your whole being whereby
you have no other life but one.
When your focus becomes on one
singular thing.
They were not scared to make such
proclamation. What made Paul
address the believer as a Soidier?.
Why?. Why didn't he pause before
making such assertion. Did he not
understand the gravity of such
statement?. To be a Soldier is to
strip yourself of any desire, motive
of yours. Your hands become the
will of your commander. That's
what Paul was saying.
Our commitment given to one man,
one person. To be a soldier is that
there are no breaks, no vacations,
no defeat, no surrender!. No, no. It's
yes yes to our Lord's will. We don't
say we have a right. The day we put
on that helmet and wore that Christ
badge, we knew what we were
opening ourselves to. Jesus Christ
did not spare to tell us that men will
persecute us, come at us, brutalize
us!. But he assured us of his peace!
Which is his indwelling presence in
us. He said to us to love one another
as able soldiers. He said we should
lay hold on His peace and not waver
or look elsewhere.
Christ my post, no turning back!. I
refuse to be weary and give up. I am

devoted to his cause. I refuse to let
worldly please respond sway me.
That's why he said to us not to be
friends with the world. I can't be
swayed now.

I have a reward of waiting on him. I

wait because he already has saved
me. I wait because he's my
strength.
NOT TO BE DEVOTED IS TO FALL.
WE ARE EITHER DEVOTED OR WE
FALL. IT'S EXTREME. IT'S EXTREME!.

Prayer is a conversation. As Sons, we
have it in mind that when we make
requests, it is a talk to our Father. In
talking to God, it is an action and a
reaction- Our prayers stands as
actions to receive God's reaction on
what is mentioned to him. Believing in
getting answers to prayers is not that
we will pray or we are praying, our
believe, faith are in the directions and
instructions we hear from God.
As an innocent girl that always love the
things of God, I asked myself "how
long will I pray, how many years will it
take me to reach the yield point of
prayers, is it when I'm forty? When I've

Why Pray? We should Pray to keep
ourselves in the right state of mind to
live as a Righteous man as we have

trusting in what God has told us in
place of prayers not minding the
physical disorders but doing Joy and
peace in the Holy Spirit: Isaiah 26:3 "

as we carry out our daily activities, in

bondage. 13 Because of this, you must
wear all the armor that God provides
so you're protected as you confront
the slanderer, for you are destined for
all things and will rise victorious. This
helps us to live in this world and not
being corrupted by it.
Every event that happens to us is
either in prayers or outside prayers.
Prayer is a happening- it comes back
to us as physical events, it is what we
received made flesh. Sometimes, I get
answers to what I didn't pray for,
rather what I'm not praying for at the
m o m e n t . L a te r, t h e H o l y S p i r i t
reminds me of when I prayed about
the situation or revealed to me who
has been praying for me in that area.
As Believers, there are no
coincidences, our coincidences is that
prayers have been offered.
Why Pray? When we pray, there is
wisdom available, strength reachable,
in the days of adversaries. If in trying
times or whenever we are faced with
challenges there are no results, it
simply means there were no prayers.
In prayers is the location and packs of
answers. A dying patient is brought
before you, do you start praying for
hours? Of course not, in that time,
there is Wisdom available on what to
do- this Wisdom doesn't jump on you,
you have certainly received it when
you prayed . Our Christ bodly called
out brother Lazarus.. this shows the
kind of things he saw when he prayed.
Why Pray? Prayer is a voice of- Don't
go until you know. There are decisions
we want to make, things we set our
mind to do, important life questions;
Should I partner with him in business?
I like the way she talks, can I have her
as a friend? She is what I want, should I
take her as my spouse? Prayer relieves
us of stress. Most times we ask God
why we fall into ditch or why we find
ourselves with wrong people, the
answer is- What did you hear from
God in regards to the request? So you
see, God is saying one thing, we are
doing something else. A man that GraceTribe
wants to yield to the Spirit should not
give excuses for physical things. It

Sir Enebeli: OK. Let me explain further.
As believers, we all have One purpose.
You might state it in different ways
but it's basically the same thing which
is to know Christ and make Him
known to our world. Check all the
vision and mission statements of true
believers and you'll see it revolves
round this. The same thing being
expressed via different words. So
there's no difference in purpose.
Whatever a believer does is towards
the furtherance of God's Kingdom
agenda.
However, specificity comes in how we
do this, Where we do this, in what
manner we do this, to whom we do
this! That's why scripture says:
Ephesians 4:11-12
[11]And he gave some, apostles; and
some, prophets; and some,
evangelists; and some, pastors and
teachers;
[12]For the perfecting of the saints, for
the work of the ministry, for the
edifying of the body of Christ:
The same work but specific ministries.
So we might both be Pastors but not
to the same congregations. We might
both be evangelists but not to the
same unsaved. Specificity comes in
knowing your lot, your assignment.

That's why Jesus said, Lo, I come in the

to do the Father's will. Our lives are
known to God. God speaking to the
prophet Jeremiah said

your mother's womb.

and appointed you as my prophet to

Before, not after. So God's has a plan
for us, a path for us that is revealed to
us when we walk with Him

notion here. Most people would tell
you to "seek God" in order to know
purpose and what comes to mind
here when they say this is to lock
yourself in a room and pray till you get
"it". Good as that is, this is not a one
time thing! Our life as believers cannot
be lived properly at anytime
independent of God. Never! That's
why we must allow God lead us in life

Sir Enebeli: OK. Our lives are written
script means that God's will and
purpose for us has been made known
before we came into existence. Not
many people might live their lives to
the latter in accordance to that script.
At a point in time, we might deviate
and do things that are not in God's will
fo r u s . I t d o e s n ' t m e a n we a re
predestined to mistake. No, that's
where the mercy and grace of God
comes in. The will of God for our lives
remains in motion not because of our
faithfulness to Gods plan but because
of God's faithfulness to His plan for us.

S i r w h e n we b e g a n , we m a d e
mention of the trend that's going
around amongst we young people.
How we tend to be influenced by the
wrong things and people. Okay sir, for
a believer,you have spoken on how to
follow and work in purpose. You said
to walk with God, the more we walk
w i t h h i m , t h e m o r e we wa l k i n
purpose. And scripture talks about
how we are the light of the world,the
salt of the earth. But most of us young
believers let me say are not so aware
what that scripture meant. And
instead of us to be the influence,we
are the ones influenced.
Sir first of all how do we make us see
and understand this sir
Sir Enebeli: Hallelujah. It must be
taught. People will do what they
know, what has been revealed to
them. That's why our ministers must
emphasise these things: to get people
into the consciousness of God's
purpose for their lives and of their vital
roles in God's Kingdom plan. Every
believer must subject himself to the
tutelage of God via His ministers and
His word.
Reporter: Very true. Sir i feel to ask
about ministry too. Like as it is, it's safe
to say we all have a ministry here. But
sir people have this notion that
ministry is just the five hold offices.
Sir Enebeli: So we constantly
encourage believers towards the
word an prayer like Paul did.
Acts 20:32
[32]And now, brethren, I commend
you to God, and to the word of his
grace, which is able to build you up,
and to give you an inheritance among
all them which are sanctified.
See: As Jesus is revealed to the
believer via His word, He begins to
conform to what he sees. He becomes
his true self. We must know that our
true self is Christ and that is why Christ
must be consistently revealed to us.

Sir Enebeli: That's a popular
misconception. The fivefold is
supposed to prepare the believer for
ministry. I think the issue is the term
being used. Let's substitute it with one
that every mind can relate with which
is "Service". That's what ministry is:
Service.
Every believer has a service to render
in the body of Christ and all services
are vital. They all function together
towards God's Kingdom agenda. The
fivefold is supposed to teach us and
prepare us (the believer) for effective
service. I love the way NLT puts it
Ephesians 4:11-12
[11]Now these are the gifts Christ gave
to the church: the apostles, the
prophets, the evangelists, and the
pastors and teachers.
[12] *Their responsibility is to equip
God's people to do his work* and build
up the church, the body of Christ.
We all have a work (ministry, service)

to do.
Reporter: So the fivefold is to prepare
and equip Men for the ministry,let me
put it the way you put it sir Service.
Sir Enebeli: Yes sir. That's it. They are
God's gift to the body of Christ, to
equip them for effective service and to
edify them (build them up).
Reporter: Sir for specifics. The services.
Because i have this belief, That
everything as a believer does is God's
point of call to you.
Let me explain what i mean. Like

Singing,acting,Dancing and more.
But most people see these as just
passing time and entertainment.
Academics so you can get to a point of
influence and all. How really should
we define these SERVICES.
Sir Enebeli: Ok. I understand you. But
we must be careful around that
notion because it's not always so.
Sometimes, some natural talents
collides with what God wants you to
do. But other times, it might not. So we
can't play a guess game around it.
This thing is found in Christ. Its not
hidden or porous. It's in Jesus and it
can be known easily. So instead of
using a fling, why not allow God show
and lead you into it.
A n o t h e r t h i n g i s t h a t we m u s t
separate our work from our job. It's
very, very important. When we speak
of ministry, its something that we do
to reveal Christ to men and draw men
to Christ. Anything that doesn't fall
into this or at least aid it, is not
ministry. Its not our work. There are
other things we might do to earn a
living. It's understandable and even in
the will of God. Paul admonishes us to
work and that he that doesn't work
shouldn't eat. But this should not be
mistaken for ministry. You must
separate it. Tent making is not a
ministry. So Paul didn't say God has
called me to the ministry of tent
makers! No, he understood the
difference between His work
(ministry) and job.
Reporter: Job and work
Hmm. So our service here is our work -
What we do to reveal Christ.
Sir Enebeli: Preach! Its simple. And its
Gods way. I see some people trying to
be wiser than God. I hear things like
"not all is called to preach. Some
people reveal Jesus by their lifestyle".
Are you serious? That's not biblical.
Scripture tells us.
1 Corinthians 1:21
[21]For after that in the wisdom of God
the world by wisdom knew not God, it
pleased God by the foolishness of
preaching to save them that believe.
Preaching is Gods way. Men must
hear this gospel of His grace and
that's the only way they can be saved.
So if you can't preach, aid those who
can. Give for the cause. Join the
organising team but do something
that will make someone hear this
message. That's the way Christ is
revealed.
Living out Christ is good. We do that
too. But for Christ to be revealed, men
must hear the gospel

Sir Enebeli: Yes sir

this big network created by God to
fulfill and project him on the Earth??
Sir Enebeli: Yes but not all. We must
understand that we are doing this
because its a fallen world and we are
doing all we can to save men. That's
God will: not for men to perish but for
all to come to repentance. So we do
this because we understand God's
will.
However, we are God's creation of
Love; created to experience His love
and to love Him. To show forth His
glory. I love the way Peter put it.
1 Peter 2:9
[9]But ye are a chosen generation, a
royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew
forth the praises of him who hath
called you out of darkness into his
marvellous light:
We are God's special people, carrying
out His purpose. That's the way to see
it

Plantation. This is all about knowing
the specifics of God's will and plan for
you and walking in it. We are all co-
labourers in God's vineyard, every
man with His lot. This way, there's no
schism in God's body. When Paul was
illustrating this, he actually used the
analogy of a body. We are a body of
Christ, every man a unique role to play
So it's important we find our place,
where and how God wants us to
function. That way, you are useful in
God's Kingdom plan without
necessarily interfering in that of
another.
God is wonderful. Even the way He
created us is in a way to show us we
are all unique individuals. No two
function the same way. We might do
the same thing but never the same
way. This way, we can operate in
unison because our different works
connect to a universal whole. What a
wonderful God.
Know Gods plan for you. Know your lot
in Gods plantation and work on it. Give
it your all and you will live a life of
Glory.

A Sermon Delivered on Sunday
Morning, July 8,
1866, by C. H. Spurgeon, at the
Metropolitan
Tabernacle, Newington.
For what the law could not do, in that
it was weak
through the flesh, God sending his
own Son in the
likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin,
condemned sin
in the flesh. ( Romans 8:3 )
1. One of the sweetest and most
attractive titles of
our Lord Jesus Christ, is, “the Friend of
sinners.” His
manners were so gentle towards
offenders, he
sought out the lost so graciously, and
he invited so
tenderly the erring to pardon and
reconciliation, that
it was slanderously said of him, that
he was the
Friend of sin as well as of sinners. This
was the old
heathen slander of the days of Celsus.
Philosophy
and Pharisaism sneeringly asserted
that Jesus
treated iniquity so lightly, and made it
so easy a
matter to escape f rom its
consequences, that he
was rather the aider and abettor of sin
than its
destroyer; and they blasphemously
declared that his
apostles had preached the doctrine of
“let us do evil
so that good may come.” My brethren,
you know
that this charge was utterly and
entirely false, and
those who uttered the libel knew it to
be so too, if
they were at all familiar with our
Lord's history. In
h i s exa m p l e e v i l fi n d s w i t h n o
encouragement, and
in his teaching it finds no excuse.
IIf they possessed
the slightest acquaintance with the
objects of his life, they must have kn-
v
own that although he was the
Friend of sinners he was emphatically
beyond all
other public teachers the Enemy of
sin. His hatred
towards sin was not a mere passion, it
was a
principle; it did not flare up now and
then, it was a
constant flame. He hated sin, if I may
say so,
implacably, never making a
moment's truce with it;
he pursued it by day in his ministry,
and by night in
his prayers; he lived to strike it, and he
died to
destroy it; and now in his risen glory it
is upon sin as
well as upon Satan that he sets his
heel. He was
revealed so that he might destroy the
works of the
devil, and he has erected a battering
ram which will
not leave as much as one stone upon
another of
Satan's strongholds which shall not
be thrown down.
2. In the life of our Lord his tenderness
for sinners
was only the natural form in which his
hatred for sin
displayed itself; just as a physician,
from the very
fact that he is the antagonist of
disease displays a
deep interest in those afflicted by it.
Our Lord's
keeping company with sinners by no
means proved
that he was the friend of sin any more
than the
physician's attendance at the
hospital would at all
lead to the suspicion that he was the
friend of
disease. The skilful physician is the
friend of the
diseased, but to the disease itself
what enemy shall
be found more determined and
inveterate? Because
the healthy have no need for a
physician, Jesus
does not seek them out; but since the
sick need
him he seeks them, not out of love for
their sin, but
out of love for them, so that they may
be delivered
from the cruel bondage under which
their sin has
held them.
3. You will have noticed too that even
when the
Saviour is most tender towards a
certain class of
sinners, it is so that he may display his
wrath
against sin itself; he will not execrate
one sin and
exonerate another, but all sin shall see
in him its
deadly foe. It is true he said to the
woman taken in
adultery, “Neither do I condemn you;
go and sin no
more.” By this he by no means
excused her adultery,
but he declined to assume the
functions of an
earthly judge; and more especially he
refused to
pronounce sentence upon one case
alone when so
many were before him who were not
accused, but
were known to him to be equally
guilty. His leniency
to one could not do any mischief when
his justice to all was so conspicuous.
Those who brought the
woman desired him simply to show
his hatred for
her, and to reveal abhorrence for that
one offence
which had happened to be
discovered; but that flash
of his eye when he said, “He who is
without sin
among you, let him first cast a stone
at her,” was a
far more terrible deliverance against
sin than if he
had said, “Yes, take her away, and
bind her hand and
foot, and let her die; but as for you, you
hypocrites,
you who are practising, perhaps, the
same sin in
private, inasmuch as you have not
been discovered
by your fellowmen, I allow you to esc-
v
escape with
impunity.” If he judged one he must
judge all, and
therefore he dismissed them all to the
appointed
time for judgment; revealing, it seems
to me, quite
as much his hatred for sin as his
tenderness
towards the sinner. So everywhere
connected with
the gentleness of the Saviour, in which
he does not
“break the bruised reed nor quench
the smoking
flax,” there is a most determinate
wrath, a lionlike
fierceness against sin, especially in its
hypocritical
forms, for he who invites the public
and
acknowledged sinner to come to him
cries in the
same breath, “Woe to you, scribes and
Pharisees,
hypocrites,” and calls them
whitewashed sepulchres
filled with dead men's bones.
4. There is not then the slightest
foundation for the
accusation that Jesus is in the least
degree the
friend of sin, although he is the friend
of sinners. On
the contrary, we can easily prove the
assertion
which is made in the text, that Jesus
Christ came
into the world to condemn sin, and
has condemned
it, so that sin never was condemned
before as it
was in the sacrifice of his person, and
that the law
of Moses itself could not through the
weakness of
the flesh condemn sin as Jesus Christ
has done; for
he has not only passed sentence upon
it but has
executed it, carrying the sentence into
effect. God
had condemned sin before, but never
so efficiently
as in the person of his Son. God's very
nature
condemns sin. The existence of the
thrice holy
Jehovah is a constant protest against
all unholiness.
God condemned sin in that day when
he drove out
Adam and Eve from the garden, when
he allowed
the trail of the serpent to ruin
Paradise, and
condemned our first parents, all
naked and
ashamed, to till the ground f rom
which they were
taken, and in the sweat of their face to
eat bread.
God condemned sin, constantly
condemned it in the
death which became common to the
entire race.
Every funeral is God's repetition of his
anathema
against sin. When our f riends are
carried to the
silent sepulchre the Lord of all does in
fact say to us,
“See what a bitter thing sin is; it takes
the light from
the eye and the music from the ear; it
silences the
voice of song, and palsies the hand of
skill; it
quenches the fire of love upon the
heart's altar, and
removes the light of understanding
from the brain's
judgment seat, and gives over the
creature once so
lovely and beloved to become a putrid
mass, a
h o r ro r a n d a l o a t h i n g , s o t h a t
affection itself cries
out, 'Bury my dead out of my sight.'”
Thus every
gravestone and every green mound in
the cemetery
may be regarded as the still small
voice of God
solemnly condemning sin.
5. The Lord of old judged and
condemned sin in that
great and terrible calamity which
swept the whole
race away with a mighty deluge;
when “sea
monsters whelped and stabled in the
palaces of
kings”; when over the mountains'

to his children, “Do not drink from it,

is sweet at first, but soon it will bring
on you most
fearful pains, and death will shortly
follow. Do not
drink from it.” But these children were
very wilful
and would not believe it; and, albeit
that sometimes
a dog or an ox would drink from it and
be severely
pained and die, they did not believe in
all its injurious effects to them. But by
and by One made
like themselves drank of it, and when
they saw him
die in most terrible anguish, then they
understood
how deadly must be the effects of this
poisoned
stream. When the Saviour himself
was made sin for
us and then died in unutterable griefs,
then we saw
what sin could do, and the exceeding
sinfulness of
sin was displayed. To use another
illustration: you
have a tame leopard in your house,
and you are
often warned that it is a dangerous
creature to trifle
with; but its coat is so sleek and
beautiful, and its
frolickings are so gentle that you let it
play with the
children as though it were a well
domesticated cat;
you cannot have it in your heart to put
it down; you
tolerate it, indeed, you even indulge it.
Alas, one
black and terrible day it tastes of
blood, and tears in
pieces your favourite child, then you
know its nature
and need no further warning; it has
condemned itself
by displaying the full ferocity of its
nature. So with
sin: we thought it was such a fair
thing, we could
not be persuaded that anything so
pleasant, so fair
spoken, could really be so deadly an
enemy as God
said it was; but when sin leaped upon
our altogether
lovely Jesus, and like a ravening wolf
delighted itself in his slaughter, then
it condemned itself most
effectually. Every Christian feels this:
what he could
not feel through contemplating the
expulsion from
Eden, what he might not feel through
thinking of the
curse of the law, he does feel and must
feel when
he sees sin so prostrating the Lord of
life and glory,
and making him suffer even to the
death. Christian,
you know now what sin would do to
you, how it
would scourge and crucify you, make
you cry, “My
God, my God, why have you forsaken
me?” and cast
you into a bloody sweat, and utterly
destroy you; you
see now that sin has such a weight in
it that only
eternal God can bear it; and you will
henceforth hate
and dread it, you will no longer favour
it. God has condemned it by allowing

manner was sin thus condemned!
I shall not,
however, treat this as a matter of
doctrine; I shall
come to you, Christian, and ask
you if it is not so in
your innermost heart. Is sin not
condemned in you?
When you see the Lord of glory die
for your
iniquities, do you not hate the sin
which brought him
down to such a depth? And when
you remember
that he died, that although he
was guiltless he died
simply out of love for you, do you
not vow a full
revenge against your sin, and feel
that the thing
which once might be pleasurable
is now detestable,
and what you could toy with and
think nothing of is
now loathsome to the very last
degree?
13. Once, again, did the Saviour
not condemn sin
most emphatically in the terror of
the pains which he
endured ? The severity of God to
sin was seen in the
Saviour's bitter griefs. No, I will not
tell you over
again that old story, that precious
story, of the
passion in the garden, of the
betrayal by his friend,
of the accusations of treason and
of blasphemy, of
the scourging, the thorn crown,
the spittle, the
mockery, the bearing of the cross,
the piercing of the
hands and feet, the stripping, the
scorn, the thirst,
the fever, the death—I will only
just remind you of his desertion by
his God, of the soul griefs that he
endured. Oh that I had power to
depict them, and
that your minds could view them
properly! We are
never duly impressed, I am afraid,
with the griefs of
the Son of God. We weep over
some silly story; or
when we hear of the little griefs of
our friends we
mourn with them, but the griefs of
our best Friend
do not affect us, and the sorrows
of our best
Beloved do not move us as they
ought to. Yet at
times, at favoured intervals, when
you and I are
permitted to sit and view the
flowing of his precious
blood, when we gaze into his
wounds, when we hear
v
his death cries and feel his pangs
and sorrows, then
we have felt that sin was
condemned. We never
hate sin so much as when we
have a realising
thought of the griefs of
Emmanuel. Human
philosophy cannot make you hate
sin; the study of
the law of God cannot make you
hate it; but if you
have ever with tearful glance
beheld the Son of God
expiring and groaning out his life
for you in
consequence of your sins, then
God has done in you,
despite the weakness of your
flesh, what the law
could not do, and what all other
things besides
could never accomplish. I must
press this matter
home with you, Christians, so that
you may give your
own verdict whether it is not so.
Have you not felt
that you have not half a word to
say for sin now?
That you could not defend it,
indeed, that you could
not bear it? It is now as if a man
should come to
you and say, “I have killed a man,
hide me from
justice”: you might possibly
consider whether you
should conceal him; but if you
discovered that he
had assassinated your child and
that his hands were
blood red with his innocent blood,
you would say,
“Hide you! how can I hide you? It is
my own child
whom you have killed.” When sin
comes to me I
know its mischievous effect, and I
dare not for that
reason tolerate it; but when I hear
that it killed my
dear Redeemer, killed him who
loved me eternally
and without change; loved me
without a motive for
loving me, but only because he
wished to love me,—
when I hear that sin killed him, I
cry, “Away with you!
Sin, away with you! Away with
you! It is not fit that
you should live. Away with you!
Down to the depths
of hell descend, and even there
there is no darkness
as dark as you are! no terror so
terrible as you are!
You hell of hells, you blackness of
darkness! you
accursed thing! You have killed
my Lord.” This is what the text
means when it tells us that the
sacrifice of Jesus condemns sin.
14. II. JESUS EXECUTES AND
DESTROYS SIN.
15. When we have a great offender
to deal with, it is
something to get him condemned;
but our customs
in this country do not always
necessitate that a
person condemned to die should
die, for there are
some cases now fresh in your
memory where the
sentence of death has been
pronounced, and
probably very justly too, and yet
mercy (God forbid
that I should say a word against
it!) has come in,
and the sentence has not been
carried out. Now our
Lord Jesus not only came into the
world to pronounce the sentence
of death upon sin, but he
crucified it, he fought with it and
overthrew it there
and then. He was not merely
judge, but executioner;
“for sin he condemned sin in the
flesh.” At the
present moment sin is crucified in
those souls where
Christ reigns. We will show you in
what way Christ
has executed sin.

16. In the first place, our Lord has
destroyed it
concerning its penal power . There
is no power in sin
to condemn the believer now.
“What,” one says,
“does sin not condemn every man
at whose door it
lies?” Certainly it does—sin
condemns every man
with whom it is found; but in the
case of the believer
sin is not imputed, not laid at his
door, for David
says, “Blessed is he whose
transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered; blessed is
the man to whom
the Lord does not impute iniquity,
and in whose
spirit there is no guile.” The sin of
the believer was
laid upon the Lord Jesus Christ,
“for the Lord has
laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
And from that day
forward the penalty of sin has
been discharged and
removed by the Redeemer's
having endured it
himself. The black cloud of my sin
has no rain in it;
it has emptied out its rain upon
Christ. Indeed, the
black cloud itself has ceased to
be. The Red Sea of
my sin cannot drown me; it is
dried up by Christ; I
have a safe passage through it.
My sin is in itself
most deadly and destructive, as I
see it to have
been in the person of my Lord
Jesus; but it shall
neither destroy nor condemn me,
for it has
destroyed and condemned Christ,
and he has
destroyed and condemned it.
Good old Christmas
Evans describes death as a
dragon wearing a sting
called sin, and being so
determined to destroy the
Saviour that it pierced its sting
right through his
body into the cross; “and then,” he
says, “he could
never draw it out again.” That old
dragon death is a
still dragon but it has lost its sting,
for it left its
sting in the cross of the dead
Redeemer. Sin is gone
and gone for ever. “He has
finished transgression,
and made an end of sin.” The jaw
teeth of sin are
broken; it may howl at me and
worry me, but it
cannot tear me or destroy me. As
for original sin,
Christ has put that away; as for
actual sin, however
great or however numerous
actual sins may be,
Christ has destroyed the penal
power of sin in the
case of every believer. “Who is he
who condemns?
It is Christ who died.” “Who shall
lay anything to the
charge of God's elect?” Once you
are in Christ, oh
believer, then you may see your
sin laid on the
scape goat's head of old, and
carried right away into
the wilderness of oblivion, where it
shall never have
an accusation to raise against you
any more for
ever.
17. Sin, in the next place, was
executed by Christ
concerning its depressing power
upon the
conscience. When an ungodly
man is aroused to see
sin, it weighs on his heart like a
nightmare. “I
cannot,” he says, “I cannot be
saved, my sin is so evil. No longer
may I hope, it is in vain to pray, in
vain to trust, in vain to do
anything; my sin fills me
with despair; it makes me
drunken with wormwood,
v
and breaks my teeth with gravel
stones.” But sin has
no such depressing power upon
the Christian to
drive him to despair. He sees sin,
but he sees an
atonement made; he perceives
how black a thing sin
is, but he sees the fountain filled
with blood; he
weeps over his sin, but he does not
despair about it;
he understands that sin by itself
would put him into
a helpless plight, but he
comprehends that the
eternal love of God in the person
of the Lord Jesus
Christ has made his case not only
hopeful but one
in which he is safe and sure of
everlasting life,
because the penalty for sin has
been discharged by
the Redeemer on his behalf. Sin is
dead to the
Christian in those two senses. I
look sin in the face
and I say to it, “You foul, you
loathsome, you
detestable thing, yet you cannot
drag me down to
hell; I know you cannot; and you
cannot even make
me fear; I am bold, I can sing, I can
rejoice, sinner
as I am! You cannot steal my
glory, for I am in
Christ, absolved in Christ and
secure.” In these two
senses sin is put away for ever by
our Saviour's
death.
18. Moreover, sin is destroyed in
the Christian
concerning its power over his
heart . No soul that has
come to trust in Jesus Christ loves
sin. You do sin,
my brothers and sisters, but if you
could have your
own way you would not. If your
new nature could
follow out its bent and desire,
what would you be?
Would you not desire to be
perfect, even as God is
perfect? To cease from every sin
and run in every
Christian duty? I can say honestly,
that if I might now
have my choice, it should not be to
possess wealth,
or even health, nor fame, nor any
of those things
which dazzle human eyes, but to
be perfectly holy;
even if I must be in consequence
very poor, and
very despised, or even die; to be
perfectly holy
would be the climax of one's
wishes. This shows
that sin is destroyed in our heart.
As Master Bunyan
tells us, Diabolos could not enter
the citadel any
more after the Prince Emmanuel
had driven him out
of the town of Mansoul; he did
enter the city through
Ear-gate and Eye-gate, and his
troops swarmed in
every street, but he could never
reconquer the
castle. The heart is kept for God;
the heart of the
Christian is inviolate and chaste
for the soul's true husband, the
Lord Jesus. Sin is slain in the heart
by
Jesus. We cannot love sin since
Christ has died.
19. The Lord Jesus Christ by his
death has also
crucified sin in its active energy
over our lives ; alas!
not over the lives of some
professors, but they are
not the true Israel. There are some
professors of
religion who, when the Lord
comes, will certainly
meet with a very fearful end,—I
mean such of you as profess to be
the Lord's people, and yet can
secretly
indulge in the sins of the flesh, can
v
be dishonest in
business, can privately serve the
devil, neglect
prayer, and act as sinners do, and
yet all the while
pretend to be among the living
family of the living
God. It would be better for you
that you had never
been born; it would be better for
you that a millstone
were around your neck, and that
you were thrown
into the depths of the sea, than to
unite yourself with
a Christian church, and make a
profession of being
in Christ while you are the slave of
your detestable
lusts. Oh, may God enlighten
many of you who may
be in such a plight! May he pull
your vizors and your
masks from your faces, wash the
paint from your
cheeks, and make you to be in
your own sight what
you are in his sight. If I must be
lost I would rather
be lost knowing my condition
than be lost a self-
deceived man, and go from the
cup of the Lord to
drink the cup of wrath for ever,
and be chased away
from the communion of saints
down into the
Pandemonium of hell. However, in
the genuine
Christian, sin has lost its power in
his life, he cannot
do as others do. If he is ever
tempted to it like
Joseph he says, “How can I do this
great
wickedness, and sin against God?”
The believer is in
the body and therefore his flesh is
weak, but his
spirit lives, and he therefore
cannot let the body
have dominion over him. Those
lusts in which some
indulge he abhors, and he will not
even mention
them, as becomes saints. Those
words which glide
so glibly from other men's lips he
hates, and will not
utter them; they are foreign words
for him. The
swine rolls in the mire with
delight, but the sheep
abhors it. When before his
conversion the man was
a raven, how he gloated over his
carrion! but now
that he is a dove he frequents the
rivers of pure
water, and loves clean feeding
while his speedy
wings often bear him above the
clouds, indeed, and
above the stars too, into the
serene atmosphere
where the dovelike spirit dwells.
He is a new creature in Christ
Jesus, and sin is destroyed in its
energetic influence over his life.
20. The day is coming—blessed be
God, the day is
coming—when sin in its very
being will be utterly
destroyed in every believer . Sin
within us lies like a
condemned criminal with his neck
under the
guillotine. Oh that the axe would
drop! Oh that the
knife would take away the life of
sin for ever! Oh
blessed hour, oh sweet discharge,
to be completely
rid of every temptation and
propensity to sin!
Sentence of death is recorded,
and the culprit is
crucified, his hands are firmly
nailed, he cannot act
as he wishes; his feet are firmly
nailed, he cannot
run as he wishes, and he will die
before long. Oh
blessed day when he shall be
entirely dead, and the
soul shall be free from sin, holy
even as God is holy,
to dwell with him for ever!

21. Now, beloved, you clearly see
that the law could
not in any of these senses destroy
sin, and that the
judgments of God do not make
men give up the
love for sin; they are hardened
rather than softened
by the terrors of God; instead of
sin losing its power
over the conscience by hearing
the law of God, it is
strangely true that man just sets
himself more
determinately against his Maker,
the more he
understands the hatred of his
Maker against sin. The
wounds of Jesus can do what
nothing else can do.
When I am pardoned, I hate sin;
when I see the love
of God in Christ Jesus, sin
becomes a condemned
and destroyed thing.
22. I must now close with the
lessons to be learned
from this. It gave me great
consolation when
studying this text to notice that
Christ had
condemned sin in the flesh , for
the flesh is sin's
stronghold; it is sin's quadrilateral,
(a) out of which it
can scarcely be driven. Our Lord
has condemned it
in the flesh; then, blessed be God,
our very flesh
shall one day be rid of this
condemned, executed
thing, and my very bones shall
rejoice, see Jesus in
the day of the resurrection, and
sing because sin has
no more dominion over it.
Christian, this is the
lesson I long for you to learn. First.
Hate sin in every
form . Christ condemns it, do not
approve it; Christ
executes it, do not harbour it; it
killed the Saviour,
kill it . Hate sin! Have a good heart
concerning its
destruction. Do not think that sin
is mightier than you
are when Christ is with you. Rise
up against your
sins and kill them. Do not tamely
yield to your
besetting sin. Let this resolution
today be strong, so
that the victory shall be yours in
every part of the
battle, and that no sin shall
remain in dominion over
you. Today record your
thanksgiving to him who
fought the battle for you and won
it. He has
condemned sin on your behalf,
and killed it too.
Ascribe to him glory and honour,
and today let your
song go up to the place where he
dwells.
23. And to you, sinner, this lesson:
See how sin is
punished . If it is punished in
Christ it will surely be
avenged in you; if Jehovah did not
spare his own
Son, he will never spare his enemy.
Take heed,
sinner, of your sin. It will be your
everlasting ruin if
you are not rid of it. See how you
can be delivered .
Even you, flesh as you are, and the
slave of flesh,
Christ can save you from your sin.
Trust your soul
with him! Come as you are, all
sinful and defiled, and
cast yourself at the foot of his
cross by a simple act
of trust. He will cast out your sin,
for he has
condemned it in the flesh. Oh may
he condemn it in
your flesh, condemn it in you now,
and save you
from it by destroying it and saving
you ! May God
grant it may be so with us, and to
him be the glory.

SOUND DOCTRINE
Until we all attain the unity of the faith
and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, to mature manhood, to the
measure of the stature of the fullness
of Christ, so that we may no longer be
children, tossed to and f ro by the
waves and carried about by every
wind of doctrine, by human cunning,
by craftiness in deceitful schemes.
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we
are to grow up in every way into him
who is the head, into Christ, from
whom the whole body, joined and
held together by every joint which is
equipped, when each part is working
properly, makes the body grow so that
it builds itself up in love. (ESV)
Apostle Paul, in his letter to the church
at Ephesus and to all believers, points
out in these verses the importance of
believers to be united, built and
established in the knowledge of
Christ. He emphasized stature and
maturity in verse 14, on how we ought
not to be “carried away” or
“influenced” by every wind of doctrine
or simply put, constantly changing
what we believe and also not allowing
people who teach what is false to
deceive us.
In understanding and fighting these
false teachings or doctrines, we must
establish what is right doctrine or
teaching for believers.
Firstly, What if doctrine?
Doctrine in its basic sense is any sort of
teaching. The Bible for example, talks
The Unity of Faith
about the teachings of men (Mark 7:7-
8), the teachings of demons (1Timothy
4:1; Rev 2:24), and the teachings of God
(John 6:45; 1Thess 4:9; 1John 2:27).
Here, we are concerned with the
teachings of God which only can bring
us into the knowledge of the son of
God as Paul the apostle pointed out in
Eph 4:13. Doctrine in this light will
simply mean scriptural teachings on
theological truths.
With the knowledge of what doctrine
is,
How then can we know that a doctrine
is sound?
In talking about the teachings of God,
we must wholly center our focus on
the Scriptures (2Tim 3:16; 2Pet 1:20-21).
For all its diversity, Scripture fits
together as a marvelous unity because

believe as long as we believe in Jesus
Christ? – Yes.

4:16 which says:

"For the Kingdom of God is not in
eating or drinking but
Righteousness, Peace and Joy in
the Holy Ghost" -Romans 14:17
The believer is a citizen of this
Kingdom of God and hence the
characteristics of the kingdom is
the characteristics of the Believer,
since he is born of this Kingdom. In
other words RIGHTEOUSNESS,
PEACE and JOY in the HOLY GHOST
are characteristics of the Believer.
Of Righteousness; he has been
made the righteousness of God in
Christ, he has been baptised into
Christ and have put on Christ. Of
Peace; having been justified he
now has peace with God and more
Still he is kept in perfect peace as
his heart is stayed on Christ. Of Joy;
we would look into briefly in this
piece.
What is Joy?
Joy is a state of cheerfulness, it's a
state of being bright in
countenance, it's a state where the
heart is glad and delighted! More
still for the Man in Christ, Joy is his
present constant.
We know that righteossness is the
OUR PRESENT CONSTANT!
nature of the man in Christ, and this
was gotten by believing in the
finished work of Christ.
Righteousness is of the spirit and
the spirit of God in the Believer is
the seal of this, He is the assurance
of salvation the Believer has. Now
Joy is no different! Joy is of the spirit
and it was wrought for us through
the finished work of Christ, the
scripture tells us in Isaiah 53:5 that
'he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for
our iniquities: the chastisement of
our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.' from the
scripture we see clearly that in as
much as Christ paid the price for Sin
and for sickness, he also did pay for
Peace wherein is Joy.
The believer's Joy is not situation
based, it is the Joy of the Lord. It is
Christ based, it is based on the Spirit
of God. It is called Joy in the Holy
Ghost! The Spirit of God is the
source of our Joy.
A question usually arises when the
subject 'Joy' is considered and that
question is this
'As a believer that I am How do I
ex p re s s J oy i n s e e m i n g u g l y
situation?' Or in other words How
do I stay Joyful in rough times?'
Well the answer to this is made
clear in scriptures and I'll briefly
point it out but then, you must first
realize that Joy has become your
nature, that Joy is not external to
you, but as the Believer that you are
Joy comes from within, so in rough
times I would say to you BE YOU!
That been said, we can rephrase the
question again to say 'how can I be
me in rough times?'
The Bible says in Galatians 5:22 that
the fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy,
peace ,.... Note that it is fruit and not
fruits and I'll explain it this way
consider an orange, the orange is
the fruit, the orange is sweet, the
orange has fibre in it, the orange
has juice in it, the orange has seeds
in it. It is still the same fruit just with
different characteristics. Having
said that the Bible tells us that the
f ruit of the SPIRIT Is Love, Joy,
peace, patience,.... The fruit is love
others are the characteristics of this
love, 1corithians 13 elaborates more
on that. The point her is that Joy is a
constituent of this fruit. Now see
this scripture with me closely.
John 15:11 'These things have I
spoken unto you, that my joy might
remain in you, and that your joy
might be full'.
What things did he speak to them?
If you read the preceding text you'll
see that he talked to them about
abiding in His Love.
This is the point, that the Believer
that is focused on the love of Christ
for him is the Believer that is ever
J oy f u l ! S o t h e a n swe r to t h e
question is this - To continually stay
Joyful or rather express Joy even in
rough times, you just need to keep
seeing God's love for you, see the
finished works of Christ see that
somethings are 'ETERNALLY SO'-
things like your righteous nature,
the peace you have with God, the
fact that Christ will never leave you
nor forsake you even in 'the valley of
the shadow of death' ; seeing this
things would always stir up Joy and
guess what? It is with this JOY that
we draw water out of the wells of
salvation (Isaiah 12:3). From
scriptures we see that solutions to
life's situations are actually all
embedded in the manifestation of
the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12 says more
about that) and so we are not
disturbed by the challenges of life
knowing fully well that we have
victory already, victory wrought for
us through Christ as it is written 'Be
of good cheer I have overcome the
world'. Now the point here is that
Joy should be your response to all
situations and the way to stir it up is
to see what manner of love the
Father has lavished upon you! Let
the love of Christ for you be your
meditation!
Finally, In the words of Apostle Paul
I say to you 'Rejoice! again I say
Rejoice! Be not anxious for
anything but by prayer and
supplication with Thanksgiving let
your request be made known to
God and the peace of God that
surpasses all understanding will
guard your hearts'(Phil 4:4,6-7)
