- Gawad Kalinga
B. The date you followed/joined the organization

C. A short description about the organization
1. Mission and Vision
- Gawad Kalinga is building a nation empowered by people with faith and patriotism; a nation
made up of caring and sharing communities, dedicated to eradicate poverty and restore human
dignity. We aim to engage at least 20,000 barangays through our platforms of solidarity,
resulting in millions of lives transformed and hope stories told.
2. History
- This charitable work was founded in 1995 by Antonio "Tony" Meloto, even before Gawad
Kalinga was formally established as a mission-driven organization in 2003. The mission to
eliminate poverty began in Bagong Silang, Caloocan, with a youth ministry camp for juvenile
delinquents. Spending time among what society considers misfits led to an awareness of the core
reason for the social issue we were attempting to solve—poverty is a crisis of social isolation and
an economic disaster. In 2003, the ministry grew into a nationwide movement where everyone
was invited and welcomed. This was the time Gawad Kalinga was formally established. Its
collaborations with numerous institutions culminated in the creation of GK's first platform,
Shelter and Land Security. By 2004, GK had spread to neighboring nations such as Indonesia,
Papua New Guinea, and Cambodia. In 2005, GK expanded its outreach to Mindanao's Muslim
communities by establishing the Highway of Peace program, which involved Muslim and
Christian communities working together to build homes in places like Maguindanao, Basilan,
and Sulu. They have also extended their help to victims of calamities through the Bayani
Challenge and Operation Walang Iwanan (2009). In 2006, a platform called GK Mabuhay was
established where different Filipino communities could showcase their culture to everyone. With
the many programs developed by Gawad Kalinga, the organization received Ramon Magsaysay
Awards and SKOLL Foundation. For 2010-2019, GK has established Building Platforms of
Solidarity like GK Enchanted Farm, SIPAG, Kusina ng Kalinga, School for Experiential and
Entrepreneurial Development, and BayanAnihan, each focusing on a variety of sectors related to
poverty and issues of the world. In 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic emerged, Gawad Kalinga
continued its work online and offline. GK worked with local government units to cover a broader
range of barangays. Lastly, GK co-founded the 3Zero Global Alliance w/ Acted and
Convergences with a goal to leave no one behind, especially the poor.
3. Reach/Scope
- Gawad Kalinga continuously maps barangays/communities where the poorest of the poor are.
They are able to give aid where and when it is most needed through to their broad network of
partners and volunteers on the field.
C. Attachment of the following pictures:
1. Proof of following/joining a charitable organization

2. Proof that the organization has been promoted on any social media platforms

D. Answer the following questions. Limit your answers to 5-8 sentences each question.
1. In light of our discussion on Caritas in Veritate, what do you think is the role of love in promoting
and joining an online charitable or mission-driven organization?
1. Caritas in Veritate, which means “charity in truth,” is the 3rd encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI,
which invites everyone in the field of justice and peace. We are invited to connect charity and truth
in pursuit of justice, the common good, and human development. Based on the discussion, I
believe love plays a significant role in being involved in any charitable organization. Love,
“Caritas,” is an extraordinary force that leads people to opt for courage and generous engagement
in justice and peace (CV 1). With this statement, I firmly believe that love drives people to do kind
things. For our nation to be united and healthy, its foundation must be established on people’s love
and concern for each other. It is love that we dare to stand up for injustices and fight for what is
right. It is love that opens our minds and heart to the underprivileged. It is love that we help even if
we are also in need. It is the love for our country that we give and share what we have with people
in different places. Love is the root of everything, and where there is love, there is life.

2. How will your ability to give or your ability to love be demonstrated in addressing the mission and
vision of the online group that you followed and joined? Give concrete/specific examples.
2. Gawad Kalinga has established a platform called “Building Platforms of Solidarity,” where
everyone can work together to address the individual factors of poverty. One of these factors is the
health and well-being of people, and I believe this is where I can start to address the mission and
vision of this organization. Its programs include Daloy ng Pag-asa, Goodbye Gutom, and
Yamang Kalusugan. Daloy ng Pag-asa is a program to ensure clean water is available to
communities. A little background about me is my family owns a water station business, and I
believe I can demonstrate my love for those who need clean water for communities. Access to and
availability of safe water is essential to our health and well-being. According to the World Health
Organization, water contamination and unsanitary conditions have been associated with spreading
diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, vomiting, hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio. With this, I can
donate or help by giving out water gallons or bottles that would greatly help these people. I can
also ask my parents to sponsor water purification systems or a source of water storage since these
are some of the services offered by a water refilling station. Another program is the Goodbye
Gutom, where families plant healthy food in their houses or wherever they can participate in their
community. Hunger is a common problem for the poor. With the current inflation, an average
family is already struggling to survive; what more of the indigents? Another action I can do to
show my love is to encourage my family and friends to plant vegetables or fruits in their houses or
communities. One step of effort can save many families.
