Hyundai Intelligent Watch Monitoring System

1 SYSTEM OVERVIEW

1.1 Introduction

Hyundai Intelligent Watch Monitoring System (HiWMS) detects irregularities of operation in

the bridge caused by operator disability or if danger to navigation occurs and alerts another
qualified navigator during unattended or one-man bridge operations. The system monitors
the awareness of the Officer of the Watch (OOW) and automatically alerts the Master or
another qualified OOW if for any reason the OOW becomes incapable of performing the
OOW’s duties.
Additionally, the HiWMS may provide the OOW with a means of calling for immediate
assistance if required.

This HiWMS conforms to the requirements of IMO and IACS :

) IMO resolution MSC.128(75) : Performance standards for a Bridge Navigational Watch
Alarm System (BNWAS) and the bridge class notations for “one-man bridge operation”.
) IMO resolution A.830(19) : Code on alarms and indicators.
) IMO MSC/Circ. 982 : Guide lines on ergonomic criteria for bridge equipment and layout.
) IACS : Requirements concerning navigation – one man bridge operated(OMBO) ships.

1.2 Functions

The HiWMS serves the following purposes :

„ Bridge Safety
- Indicates that an alert officer of the navigational watch is present on the bridge.
- Alarms operation status on the bridge in the event of a failure of the bridge navigation
equipment and the severe failure of shipboard safety systems.

of any officer of the watch deficiency (absence, lack of alertness, no response to another
alarm/warning, etc.). Alarm Sequence without acknowledgements is followings.
- Visual Flashing Indication.
- First Stage Audible (Sound) Alarm.
- Second and Third Stage Remote Audible (Sound) Alarm.
„ Back-up Navigator Call-Alarm
- Provisions are to be made at the bridge to activate the master and back-up navigator
call-alarm.

2 SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

Hyundai Intelligent Watch Monitoring System (HiWMS) unit consists of two separated units.
The HiWMS Bridge Unit (WBU) is a stand-alone panel or flush mounted assembly based on
standard hardware and software. It performs interval-checking algorithm requiring manual
acknowledgment within pre-set intervals, thereby detecting the well being of the navigating
officer.
A navigation alarm system which transfers operational warnings from the grounding and
collision avoidance system as well as instrument malfunction alarms to a WBU and further to
the captains quarters, public areas and the cabin of a back-up navigator.
The alarm output can be connected to navigator cabins, public areas and other alarm
systems, via a digital output relays in HiWMS I/O Unit (WIU).

3 SYSTEM FUNCTION

3.1 Function Overview

Hyundai Intelligent Watch Monitoring System (HiWMS) consists of :

z Interval checking system which requires manual acknowledgement within pre-set
intervals and therefore detects if are officer of the watch deficiency (absence, lack
of alertness, no response to another alarm/warning, etc.).
z Alarms operation status on the bridge failure events of the bridge navigation
equipment and the severe failure of shipboard safety systems
z A navigation alarm system which transfers operational warnings from the grounding
and collision avoidance system as well as navigation equipment alarms to a central
alarm panel and further to the captains quarters, public areas and the cabin of a
back-up navigator.

3.1.1 Operation Mode

The HiWMS has incorporate the following operation modes :

z Automatic (Automatically brought into operation whenever the ship’s heading or
track control system is activated and inhibited when this system is not activated)
z Manual (Interval Check System On / Off manually by operator)

The system is to be arranged so that only the captain(Master) has access to the means for
setting the intervals and modes.
The system is to be designed and arranged such that only the vessel’s Master(captain) has
access for enabling and disabling it and setting the appropriate intervals so that it cannot be
operated by an unauthorized manner, i.e., removing the fuses or keeping the
acknowledgment button permanently depressed.

3.1.2 Interval Checking for Officer of the Watch Alertness-check

The system is designed to activate a warning light followed by a buzzer at pre-set

intervals. If a warning is not acknowledged within predefined interval check time, the alarm is
transferred to captain’s quarters, public areas and back-up navigator.
The buzzer in captain’s quarter, public area and navigators cabin is activated until "Sound
Off" is pressed on HiWMS Bridge Uint (WBU).
The selected interval period is automatically reset to zero whenever “reset” or “sound off”
are pressed on bridge.

HiWMS Operator’s Manual 8

Hyundai Intelligent Watch Monitoring System

3.1.3 Navigation System Alarm Check

The navigation alarm system is received up to 25 external alarm signals from

miscellaneous navigation device or bridge equipment. The navigation alarm inputs via a
digital input in HiWMS I/O Unit (WIU).
When navigation alarm occurs, the Bridge Buzzer will alert with a continuous sound and
alarm information display of the failure alarm in HiWMS Bridge Unit (WBU).
If the alarm is not acknowledged by the navigator within 15 seconds, the Bridge Buzzer will
be activated again with a pulsating sound. If another 15 seconds has passed without alarm
acknowledgement and the alarm is transferred to captain’s quarter, public areas and back-up
navigator’s cabin.

3.1.4 Transfer of Alarms

Bridge equipment alarms to be automatically transferred to the master’s quarter and back-
up navigator’s cabin if not acknowledged at the bridge within predefined 15 seconds.
In addition to the alarms/indicators which may be required by the various IMO Resolutions
referenced and pertinent flag Administration, the following conditions are to be alarmed at the
monitoring workstation and HiWMS system in the bridge.

Equipment Bridge equipment alarm

a) Off-course
b) Off-track
