TYFON®
The original!
From classic “honks” to complete acoustic
systems
A Kockum Sonics whistle is not only high-quality design. It also contains

the experience of more than 1 million TYFON® installations!

Audibility is determed not simply by the strength of sound emenating from

the whistle – much more is entailed to overcome absorption, distortion and

local noice. This quality is the result of more than 80 years of development.

The TYFON® fulfils all current IMO and national authority regulations.

Our strength is your benefit!

ELECTRO-TYFON MT 150-
Whistle system application Maintenance

Maintenance
ELECTRO-TYFON is designed to give long reliable service without routine maintenance but a periodic inspection always
gives early warning of any faults that may develop.
Dismantling the Whistle The Piston and Rod
Inspection or change of cylinder, piston, piston rings, rod, rod bearing can be done without removing the crankcase from
the foundation in the following way:
Shut off and block the electric power supply. Dismount the horn (D) and outlet pipe (C). Unscrew the crankcase cover (B).
Remove the cylinder (H) with a sharp tool between the cylinder and base plate (L). Loosen the piston screw (J). When
loosening, counterhold with a spanner on the flat surfaces of the piston rod just above the piston to avoid twisting the rod.
Remove the piston (I). Unscrew the bearing cover (E) of the rod (G), remove the circlip (F) from the crank journal and pull
apart the rod with a puller.
The Motor
To remove the motor, the crankcase/motor unit has to be dismounted from the foundation. After dismounting the piston,
remove the base plate from the gear housing. Do not forget to loosen the screw (K) inside the cylinder. Unscrew the motor
screws (A ), lift the motor and remove it through the channel in the crankcase.
The Crankshaft
Unscrew the M8 screw (P) in the crankshaft bearing cover at the motor side of the crankcase. Install a long M8 screw in
the thread and pull out the cover. Remove the spacer O-ring and circlip at the end of the crankshaft and press out the
crankshaft from the motor side of the crankcase. The drive end bearing (O) is fixed in the crankcase, and the balance end
bearing (Q) moves out with the crankcase. Do not remove the two bearing location screws (N) inside the crankcase.
General inspection
There must be no scratches or nicks on the inside surface of the cylinder. A slight clearance between the piston ring and
cylinder is quite normal. Replace the piston ring if the thickness is below 5,5mm.
Reassembling
When replacing the gear wheel (M) at the motor, heat the new wheel to about 80°C before pressing it on the motor shaft.
Lubricate the teeth of the gear wheel with Molybdeniun or tungsten disulfide grease of good quality intended for high-
speed gears. Lubricate the piston rod bearing and fill half of the volume inside the bearing cover with high-speed roller
bearing grease of good quality for example: Klüber Isoflex LDS 18 Special A.
Important
On inspection or change of cylinder, always replace O-rings, circlips, the piston rod sealing ring and piston screw
securing plate with new ones. Lock all screws with Loctite 242 or similar locking liquid.

Filter
If the pipe line above deck is longer than 100m a primary
FILTER TP 15/2 should be installed at the foot of the mast to
protect the signalling apparatus from water condensate and
rust particles. Wiring diagram
Positioning Whistles
For an all–round radiation and a limited noise level from the Heater Valve Valve
ship's whistles at the listening posts, the positioning of the Coil 2 Coil 1
ship's whistles is very important. For further information

General Information Operates in all Temperatures
ELECTRIC PISTON HORN MT 150 is an electrically driven ELECTRIC PISTON HORN MT 150 will give a high perfor-
sound emitter. It is built-up of comparatively few moving parts mance in both arctic and tropical climates. A patented sys-
as the 'swinging piston', unlubricated cylinder and an oil-free tem with a high efficiency rectangular horn and a specially
gearbox. designed motor will match the motor speed to the acoustic
The main important features are the following: resonance of the horn at any ambient temperature. This sys-
• unsymmetrical sound distribution tem also prevents the whistle from being affected by voltage
• operates in all ambient temperatures and frequency fluctuations in onboard mains.
• unaffected by mains voltage and frequency fluctuations Maintenance-free
• maintenance-free and non-corrosive
• easy to install All components are chosen to withstand corrosion and to
• complies fully with the International Regulations (IMO 1972). give a minimum of maintenance. The crankcase and founda-
tion is hot galvanized. The motor is painted with Epoxy and
Polyethane (white). The horn is made of glass fibre armed
Unsymmetrical Sound Distribution polyester (white). The cylinder is unlubricated and the gearbox
The IMO Regulations stipulate a very high sound pressure is oil-free. The piston rod bearing includes a grease reservoir
level for efficient signalling, yet the sound level of the vessel's with a special device to minimize the grease losses.

1. Maintenance

Maintenance period is 60 weeks.

When work is performed on the TYFON ensure that the air supply
is disconnected.

Visually examine the glass fiber reinforced polyester bell piece for any signs
of cracking or damage. If any damaged replace immediately and ensure that
the fastening screws are tightened sufficiently.

2. Troubleshooting

No signal when activated

Most common faults are:

No air pressure
Debris in TYFON housing and valve
Broken diaphragm TYFON, or broken piston TV 784

Activate the valve.

When no airflow is heard at the bell piece, check the inlet air pressure.

3. Repair

TYFON AT 150/330
Cracks or damaged
Replace the bell piece when cracks or damaged is found.

Diaphragm exchange
Remove cover, Orings and diaphragm.
Always replace diaphragm and Orings together.

Configuration for different applications.

In most cases the TLG2000 do not need to be configured and factory settings can be used.
However, on some installations it is necessary to change the TLG2000 functionality. When power up TLG2000 it
is possible to enter a configurations mode. Three functions can be adjusted to suit the actual needs.

A. Enable / disable the Fore TYFON indicator on the panel.

If two whistles (fore and aft) are connected and the distance between them are more than 100 m it is not allowed to
sound them simultaneously. See the manual for correct electrical connections.

B. Enable / disable the BELL and GONG function or change the mode of operation.
BELL and GONG function is enabled by default and is configured to operate an electro-mechanical B&G type KB30 and
KG50. If B&G is not connected to the TLG2000, this function can be disabled and when pushing the button for B&G,
respective LED will rapidly flash for 2 seconds to indicate that this function is not installed.

C. Change the activation mode of the GEA & Abandon ship function.
There are three methods of activating the GEA or Abandon ship signal by an external dry contact (closed when active)
connected to the TLG2000.
8 - Temporary (pulsed) action will start the pre-programmed signal sequence. One more pulse will stop the sequence.
9 - When active, the pre-programmed signal sequence is started. When not active, the sequence is stopped.
10 - If an external signal pattern generator is used, this mode should be used.

1 Press B and C buttons simultaneously when powering up the unit. All LED’s will flash for 3 seconds.
The actual configuration will be shown on the G group of LED’s (marked 1 to 12).
2 Press E button (+ moves LED’s up, - moves down) to actual position of the G groups of LED’s.
3 Check function value for chosen position on LED A
LED off = function disabled
LED on = function enabled
4 Move the position of the lit LED to the corresponding function in the group with use of buttons E.
5 Turn the function ON by pressing the button B. Check that the LED A is turned on.
5 When all settings are done, press the F buttons simultaneously to save the new settings.
Before pressing the F button you can press the D button to see the new configuration.
6 All LED’s will flash for 3 seconds and the unit will be automatically restarted.
