ANGLE OF

ELEVATION &
DEPRESSION
Prepared by Ms. Jovi Marie R. Golilao
Angle of Elevation
■ The term angle of elevation denotes
the angle from the horizontal upward to an
object. An observer’s line of sight would be
above the horizontal.
Angle of Depression
■ The term angle of depression denotes the
angle from the horizontal downward to an
object. An observer’s line of sight would be
below the horizontal.
■ Note that the angle of elevation and the angle
of depression are congruent .
Example 1. Calculating Angle of Depression
■ Adam observes a buoy in the sea below him from a point 6
ft above a 45 ft cliff. He has been told that the perpendicular
distance from the buoy to the base of the cliff is 60 ft. What is
the angle of depression, in degrees, from Adam to the buoy?
Give your solutions to two decimal places.
Example 2. Angle of Elevation
■ Nabil stands 40 m from a building that is 25 m tall. What is the
angle of elevation from Nabil to the top of the building? Round
your answer to the nearest degree.
Example 3. Angle of Elevation/ Depression
■ a 15 ft ladder is leaning against a wall with an angle of elevation
of 70∘. How high up the wall would it reach? Give your answer
to two decimal places.

assigned task #2.
■ The final answers are already given in your activity sheet. What you’re going to do is
to provide the solution and diagram that will lead to that final answer.
■ You are allowed to discuss answers/ solutions (NOT COPY).
■ There will be a Graded Recitation next meeting. Prepare for it.
