Angle of Depression
and
Angle of Elevation
The angle between a horizontal and a line of sight above the
horizontal is called an angle of elevation.
Angle of Depression
The angle between a horizontal and a line of sight below the
horizontal is called an angle of depression.
Examples:
1. If a 76ft. flagpole cast a shadow of 45ft. long, what is the angle
of elevation of the sun from the tip of the shadow?

2. A watcher is observing at the top of a 46ft light tower. He is
looking at a boat that is 80 ft away from the light tower. Solve for
the angle of depression of the watcher to the boat.

3. A ladder leaning against a house makes an angle of 60 degrees
with the ground. The foot of the ladder is 7 feet from the
foundation of the house. How long is the ladder?
Examples:
4. From the top of the tower, the angle of depression to a lamp
post is 72 degrees. The top of the tower is 80 feet above the
ground. How far is the lamp post from the foot of the tower?
