For this module, learners build their skills and competencies in thinking critically
and in solving equations and inequalities involving number-relation, age, work, mixture,

expected to have mastery on the following objectives:

1. prove the Midline Theorem;

2. prove theorems on trapezoids and kites; and
3. solves problems involving parallelograms, trapezoids and kites.

1 Midline Theorem

A quadrilateral which has two opposite sides parallel and the other two opposite
sides non-parallel is called a trapezoid. The parallel sides of a trapezoid are called its
bases and the non-parallel sides are its lateral sides (legs). The line segment connecting
the midpoints of the lateral sides of a trapezoid is called its midline.

What’s In

Let us recall the midline theorem of a triangle: the line segment connecting the
midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side, and is congruent to half
of it.

Midline Theorem of a Triangle

In a triangle, the segment joining the midpoint of two sides is parallel to the third side
and is equal to one-half of it.

Proof:

Given: ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 with 𝑋 and 𝑌 as the

midpoints of sides ̅𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅ 𝐴𝐶 . By
̅ ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅ and A
definition of midpoint, 𝐴𝑋 = 𝑋𝐵
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝑌 = ̅̅̅̅
𝑌𝐶 . Construct midline ̅𝑋𝑌 ̅̅̅̅ and 1
produce ̅𝑋𝑌 ̅̅̅̅ to 𝐷 so that ̅𝑋𝑌 ̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝑌𝐷
̅̅̅̅. Join
X 2 Y
̅𝐷𝐶
̅̅̅̅. By vertical angle, ∠2 ≅ ∠4. It follows
D
3
that ∆𝐴𝑋𝑌 ≅ ∆𝐶𝐷𝑌 by SAS postulate
which means that ∠1 ≅ ∠4; ̅𝐴𝑋 ̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝐶𝐷
̅̅̅̅ 4
because of the CPCTC. Based on the B C
figure, ∠1 ≅ ∠4 are alternate interior
angles and by AIP Theorem, ̅𝐶𝐷 ̅̅̅̅ ∥ ̅𝑋𝐵
̅̅̅̅ . By transitive property, we now
̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅
conclude that 𝐶𝐷 = 𝑋𝐵 . If two sides of a quadrilateral are parallel and
congruent, then the quadrilateral 𝑋𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a parallelogram. By definition of
parallelogram, ̅𝑋𝐷 ̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝐵𝐶
̅̅̅̅ and using the betweenness and substitution
property, we have ̅𝑋𝐷 ̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝑋𝑌
̅̅̅̅ + ̅𝑌𝐷
̅̅̅̅ = 2𝑋𝑌 ̅̅̅̅̅. Therefore, ̅𝐵𝐶
̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝑋𝐷
̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝑋𝑌
̅̅̅̅ + ̅𝑌𝐷
̅̅̅̅ = 2𝑋𝑌
̅̅̅̅̅
and nails down into:
1
̅𝑋𝑌
̅̅̅̅ = ̅𝐵𝐶

What’s New

Midline Theorem of Trapezoid

The median of a trapezoid is parallel to the bases and half the sum of the lengths of
the bases

Proof:
Given trapezoid 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 with 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ ∥ 𝐷𝐶
̅̅̅̅
and length of the bases are 𝑚 and 𝑛,
respectively. Joining the two non-
consecutive vertices 𝐵 and 𝐷 will form
∆𝐴𝐵𝐷 and ∆𝐶𝐷𝐵. The midline ̅̅̅̅ 𝐸𝐺 , which is
̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅
parallel to 𝐷𝐶 and 𝐴𝐵, intersects the
diagonal ̅̅̅̅
𝐷𝐵 at 𝐹. Segment ̅̅̅̅ 𝐸𝐹 and ̅̅̅̅𝐹𝐺 are
the midsegments of ∆𝐴𝐵𝐷 and ∆𝐶𝐷𝐵. Since
𝐸𝐹 and ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅ 𝐹𝐺 are the midsegments of the said
triangle, the following holds true:
1 1
𝐸𝐹 = 2 ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅ 𝐴𝐵 and ̅̅̅̅
𝐹𝐺 = 2 ̅̅̅̅
𝐷𝐶
Adding these results, we have
1 1 1
𝐸𝐹 + ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅ 𝐹𝐺 = 2 ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐵+2 ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ + ̅̅̅̅
𝐷𝐶 = 2 (𝐴𝐵 𝐷𝐶 )

1 1
By betweenness property ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ = ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝐹 + 𝐹𝐺 ̅̅̅̅ + 𝐷𝐶
𝐸𝐺 = 2 (𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ ). Therefore, ̅̅̅̅
𝐸𝐺 = 2 (𝑚 + 𝑛).∎
