3 a An unpolarized light of Intensity Io is incident on a [6] CO3 L3
Polaroid P1.The light transmitted by it is then incident
on the second polaroid P2 with its pass axis making an
angle of 60 degrees relative to the pass axis of P1.
Find the intensity of the light transmitted by P2.
b) Between two polaroids placed in crossed position ,a [6] CO3 L3
third polaroid is introduced . The axis of the third
polaroid makes an angle of 30 degrees with the axis of
the first polaroid .Find the intensity of the transmitted
light from the system assuming Io to be the intensity of
unpolarized light on the first polaroid.
4 a) Find the de Broglie wavelength of [10] CO4 L4
a) 40gm baseball with a velocity of 30m/s and
b) an electron with a velocity of 10^(7)m/s.
Justify with reasons why the wave nature of matter is
not more apparent in daily observations.
b) Planck's constant h is so small that the limitations [10] CO4 L4
imposed by the uncertainty principle are significant
only in realm of the atoms.Use the uncertainty principle
to place a lower limit on the energy an electron can
have if it is to be a part of nucleus when a typical
atomic nucleus is about 5.0*10^(-15)m in radius.
c) Justify with reasons that the quantization of angular [5] CO4 L4
momentum is the direct consequence of wave nature
of electron.

5 a) An electron is confined within a one-dimensional box [10] CO5 L3
whose edges are located at x=0units and x=Lunits.
Consider this electron’s wavefunction to be given as
Ψn = A sin(nπx/L)
(i) Determine value of constant ‘A’.
(ii) Determine probability of finding this electron in
exact middle of the box for n=1 and n=2 states.
Here‘n’is an integer representing corresponding states
of the electron.
b) Consider a particle travelling to the right direction along [5] CO5 L4
x-axis with energy E. The potential energy is zero for
x<0, but at x=0 there is a potential step and the
potential energy increases to(positive)Vo for x>0. The
particle passes through the region as if it is passing
through another medium (Consider E>Vo). Justify this
behavior of particle with the help of the De-Broglie
wave attached with the moving particle.
