Goals and Objectives: The course is designed to introduce the student to the language, method-
ology, scope, and spirit of mathematics through the introduction of numerous useful mathematical con-
cepts. The study of these topics will (i) provide the student with an introduction to key ideas in different
areas of mathematics, (ii) provide the student with perspective on the nature and relevance of mathematics,
(iii) develop problem solving and critical thinking skills (iv) expand understanding of and appreciation for
mathematics.
Measurable Student Learning Outcomes with respect to the course.
(1) Students should be able to solve problems that reflect their understanding of the course
and concepts.
(2) Students should be able to perform computations (some by hand and some using specific
features of a graphing calculator) that involve topics in the course.
(3) Students should communicate mathematics with precision, clarity and organization.
The above outcomes will be assessed through quizzes and exams.

Homework: Homework is assigned at the end of each class and should be completed for the next
class. Your careful work on these assignments is very important for your understanding of the
material covered in the course.
Quizzes: Quiz problems are taken DIRECTLY from the assigned Homework problems, including
the assigned Check Your Understanding problems. Each quiz (after the first) will contain some
“new” and some “old” problems. Quiz 4, for example, will contain a problem from the material
covered since Quiz 3, and another problem from the material covered up to and including Quiz 4.
At the end of the course, the lowest three quizzes will be discarded.
Exams: Two tests and a comprehensive final.
Grading: Quizzes: 20% Tests 1: 25% Test 2: 25% Final: 30%
Note: If a student has a valid excuse for missing Exam 1 or Exam 2, the then the Final graade will also be
registered as that of the missed exam.
Attendance: You are expected to attend all classes. Should you miss a class, you are still
responsible for the work covered and any announcements made (such as test dates).
