1. Derive an expression for LMTD of a parallel flow heat echanger. List out the
assumptions..

2 a) Briefly explain about fouling in heat exchangers.

b) In a CFHE water is heated from 40 oC to 80oC by hot flue gases. The flue gases enters
at 200oC and leaves at 100oC. Water flow rate is 1060 kg/hr. Take U = 200 W/m 2K. The
specific heats of water and flue gases are 4.18 kJ/kgK and 1 kJ/kgK respectively. Find the
area of the heat exchanger.

3 a) Draw temperature variations of hot and cold fluids in parallel flow HE, counter flow
HE, condenser and evaporato
b) A hot fluid at 200oC enters a heat exchanger at a mass flow rate of 104 kg/hr. Its
specific heat is 2000 J/kgK. It is to be cooled by another fluid entering at 25 oC with a mss
flow rate of 2500 kg/hr and its specific heat is 400 J/kgK. Find the exit temperatures of
hot and cold fluids. Take U = 250 W/m2K and A = 20 m2.

4 A hot square plate 50 cm x 50 cm, at 100oC is exposed to atmospheric air at 20oC. Find
the heat loss from the plate if (i) the plate is kept vertical & (ii) the plate is kept
horizontal.
..
5 a) Sketch the velocity and temperature profiles on a vertical plate in natural convection.
b) A large vertical plate 3 m high is maintained at 50oC and exposed to atmospheric air at
10oC. Calculate the heat transfer if the plate is 10 m wide.
.

6. a) Differentiate between filmwise and dropwise condensation.

b) Draw and eplain with suitable graph various regimes of boiling.
