Heat Transfer Paper - IV
P. Pages : 1 KNT/KW/16/7760
Time : Three Hours *0715* Max. Marks : 80
_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Answer any five questions.
3. Due credit will be given to neatness and adequate dimensions.
4. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
1. a) Explain Fourier's law of heat conduction with assumptions and essential features. 6
b) A furnace wall consists of three layers. The inner layer of 10 cm thickness is made of fire 10
brick (k = 1.04 w/mk). The intermediate layer of 20 cm thickness is made of masonry brick
(k = 0.71 w/mk) followed by a 6 cm thick concrete wall (k = 1.37 w/mk). When the furnace
is in continuous operation the inner surface of the furnace is at 800ºC while the outer
concrete surface is at 50ºC. Calculate the rate of heat loss per unit area of the wall, the
temperature at the interface of the firebrick and masonry brick and the temperature at the
interface of the masonry brick and concrete?
2. Derive expression for temperature distribution in a straight fin of rectangular profile for an 16
infinitely long fin & fin with tip insulated.
3. a) Explain the concept and use of thermal & hydrodynamic boundary layer & its significance. 10
b) A black body is at temperature of 260ºC. Calculate it's emissive power. If the emissive 6
power is to be increased by 60% to what temperature the surface of black body needs to
be raised?
  5.67 108 w / m2k 4
4. a) Discuss in detail the various regimes in pool boiling and explain the condition for growth 8
of bubble. What is the effect of bubble size on boiling?
b) Explain in detail the difference between dropwise condensation and filmwise condensation. 8
5. a) A parallel flow heat exchanger has hot and cold water stream running through it, the flow 8
rates are 10 and 25 kg/min respectively. Inlet temperatures are 75ºC and 25ºC on hot and
cold sides. The exit temperature on the hot side should not exceed 50ºC. Assume
h i  h o  600 w / m2k. Calculate the area of heat Exchanger using LMTD approach.
b) Derive an expression for heat flow in a composite pipe & composite wall. 8
6. It is desired to warm an oil of specific heat 2 kJ/kgºk from 300 to 325 k by passing it through 16
a tubular heat exchanger containing metal tubes of inner diameter 10mm. Along the outside
of tube flows water, inlet temp. 372ºk and outlet temp. 361ºk. The overall heat transfer
coefficient from water to oil based on inside area of tubes may be assumed constant at
230 w/m2 ºk and 0.075 kg/s of oil is to passed through each tube. The oil is to make two
passes through the heater and water makes one pass along outside the tubes. Calculate the
length of tubes required. f = 0.98.
7. Explain the steam economy and steam capacity of an evaporation system. What are the 16
different flow arrangements in a multiple effect evaporative system. Write down the
material and energy balance of a –
i) single effect evaporative system.
ii) Backward feed triple effect evaporative system.
iii) Forward feed triple effect evaporative system.
