Volleyball
ORIGINS
-The sport was invented in the U.S. by William G. Mergan in 1895.
Physical director of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke. Massachusetts.
-It was designed as an indoor sport for businessmen who found the new game of basketball too
vigorous.
THE GAME
-it is a game of two teams of six players separated by a net.
OBJECTIVE
-for each team to send the ball over the net to ground it on the opponent's court. and to prevent
the ball from being grounded on its own court.
-The goal is to be the first team to reach 25 in both games of the 2 set.
RULES IN VOLLEYBALL
There are a lot of rules, but the most important are:
-The players can’t touch the net.
-A single person can’t touch the ball two times consecutively.
-The team is only allowed three touches. -The serve must start outside the court. -Blocking a
serve isn’t allowed.
GREAT PLAYERS
Karch Kiraly
-(born November 3, 1960, Jackson, Michigan, U.S.)
- is among the most highly regarded men's volleyball players in history
PASSING
- The pass is a method of receiving an opponent’s serve and or overhand attack.
- Two popular forms of this skill:
1. the forearm pass
2. the overhand pass
SETTING
- When setting the ball, the goal is to position the ball in the air so that a teammate is able to
easily complete an overhand attack/hit.
BLOCKING
- A block is an attempt to halt an opponent's attack by jumping with the hands overhead to
create a barrier at the net. The most common blocking violation is touching the net.
HITTING
- The attack usually takes place on a team's third and final contact. Because an attacker's
goal is to down the ball on the other team's side of the court, players often jump when striking
the ball to increase the difficulty of receiving the hit.
