II. Reading

1. I went to Tay Ho, a village famous for its conical hat making techniques in Hue last week. The
craft was first introduced to Hue hundreds of years ago, with numerous craft villages - namely
Da Le, Phu Cam, Doc So, Trieu Tay, Kim Long, or Sia ect. Among them, Tay Ho is the most
prominent name since it is the birthplace of the conical hat in Hue. Located on the bank of the
Nhu Y River, in Phu Ho commune, Phu Vang District, the village is about 12 km away from Hue
City.
2. It takes artisans a lot of time and effort to make a seemingly simple conical hat. Normally,
they have to follow 15 stages, from going to the forest to collect leaves to ironing the leaves,
making frames, etc. Almost all of these processes require the diligence and adroitness of
craftsmen's hands. Firstly, craftsmen collect young leaves of the Bo Quy Diep tree from the
forest. The leaves are then exposed to mist, dried and ironed. The next step, which determines
the shape and size of a conical hat, is making a cone frame, with 16 small bamboo splints bent
into an arc shape. After that, leaves will be arranged and attached to the frame. As a Hue’s
conical hat always has two layers of leaves, craftsmen must be very skillful to make them very
thin. After this stage, the hats will be covered with oil and dried under the sun. To make the
conical hats more special, paintings of Hue and poems are added between the two layers of
leaves, creating bai tho or poetic conical hats.
3. These days, although the conical hat has not been thriving as ever, there are still many talented
artisans in Tay Ho living on the traditional craft. Commercially, the conical hat village in Hue
provides the market with millions of hats yearly, which meets not only the needs of locals but
those of tourists as well. The conical hat will likely remain a unique souvenir in Hue’s tours for
years to come.

II. Reading
Which cities around the world provide the best or worst living conditions? Annually,
the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) conducts a survey to assess the quality of life
in 140 cities worldwide. Over thirty factors across five broad categories of stability,
healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure are used and given
scores to rank the cities in order - from the best to the worst. The survey only
addresses a selection of cities that people might want to live in or visit, so cities such
as Kabul and Baghdad are left off the list.
B. For the year 2017, Melbourne in Australia, which scored 97.5 out of 100 was
named the most liveable city in the world again. It was the first time in the survey’s
15-year history that a city had held the No. 1 rank for seven consecutive years.
Vienna (Austria), which scored equally with Melbourne in all categories except
culture and environment, came second place. After Vienna, Vancouver (Canada) and
Toronto (Canada) were ranked third and fourth on the list. Calgary (Canada) and
Adelaide (Australia) shared the fifth spot. Unsurprisingly, Osaka, Tokyo and Hong

Kong were once again Asia’s best cities to live in. However, none of them made it to
the top 10 list.
C. The least liveable city on Earth, according to the survey, was Damascus. Given the
horror and hardship Syria had experienced in recent times, few would disagree. Lagos
in Nigeria, Tripoli in Libya, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Port Moresby in Papua New
Guinea completed the bottom five. In these cities, living conditions were the most
difficult or dangerous.
D. Overall, analysts said that top-scoring cities tended to be medium-sized ones in
wealthier countries with a relatively low population density. Lower population
density was linked to lower levels of crime and better infrastructure. Meanwhile,
cities with growing threats of terrorism and political and social conflicts tended to
score the lowest.

Toll-free child helpline to support children in Vietnam

In a great effort to reinforce its commitments towards children and their protection, the
government, with support from Plan Vietnam, an international children’s development
organisation, set up the first-ever national child helpline (Magic Number 18001567) in May
2004. The toll-free helpline provides youths, especially children with access to 24-hour
counselling, support, and protection services.

After over ten years of operation, the helpline has received and processed more than 2.5
million calls from children and adults nationwide. Over half of the calls came from children
and most child callers were in the 11-18 year old age group. They said that they had suffered
from a range of problems, namely school pressures, issues with classmates, bad health,
violence, trafficking or even sexual abuse. All children who called the helpline received
counselling appropriate to their situation. They were referred to suitable services and places
of safety, as a means to provide comprehensive assistance. Thanks to the constant efforts of
experts, consultants as well as the enthusiastic help of Plan Organisation, the helpline has

ZALO: 0964189109 15
tri viet junior – TING ANH THCS
considerably contributed to restricting damages to children and assisted them in developing
both physically and mentally.

As a member of Child Helpline International (CHI), Magic Number aims to offer a hand
when children’s needs are ignored or their rights are violated. If you are at risk or need
advice, contact Child Protection Helpline on 18001567. Apart from this number, however, as
of December 2017, you can dial 111 - a new hotline - for the same purpose.

II. Reading

A. Nowadays, teenagers have changed considerably in comparison to the teens in the past in
how they spend their free time.
B. This is a “technology” generation. For teens in today’s world, mobile phones, the Internet,
and TV are essential parts of their everyday life. Most teenagers prefer watching TV and
surfing the Internet to reading books. They don’t like reading because watching TV is easier
and they don’t have to use their own imagination. Teenagers prefer to spend free time in
front of a computer rather than to do physical activities such as playing football, riding bikes
or going swimming. According to a recent study, teenagers growing up in the 1970s and
1980s enjoyed more than two hours of outside play each weekday, and a further nine hours at
weekends, whatever the weather. However, today's teens play outside for just over an hour
each weekday, and fewer than five hours on Saturdays and Sundays.
C. Teens now often communicate to their friends by instant messages instead of talking face-
to-face. When they want to share their feelings or some private thoughts, they will post them
on Facebook. This makes it easier to get comments or receive encouragement from friends.
Keeping a diary is out of date now.
D. Teens now spend more time meeting friends in places like fast food restaurants or cafes.
They like to eat fast food, greasy food and sugary drinks more than home-cooked meals. This
leads to obesity.
E. In conclusion, the lifestyle of teenagers has changed a lot compared to the past. Parents
should encourage their children to play outdoors more. This helps them not only stay active
and healthy but also socialize with friends as well as create treasured childhood memories.

Perfume Pagoda

Located in Huong Son Commune, My Duc District, Ha Noi, the Perfume Pagoda is
one of Vietnam's most famous religious sites. It is a striking complex of unique
Buddhist temples and shrines, including Den Trinh (Presentation Shrine) and Thien
Tru (Heaven Kitchen) Pagoda, built into the limestone cliffs of Huong Tich
Mountains. At the heart of the complex lies the Perfume temple, also called Chua
Trong (Inner Temple) in the giant Huong Tich Cavern. There are numerous stalactites
and stalagmites in various shapes such as rice stacks, trees and dragons. The first
temple is thought to have been built in the 15th century during the reign of Le Thanh
Tong. Over the years, some of its structures which were severely damaged have been
restored or replaced.

For those who want to find a peaceful place to stay away from the hustle and bustle of
cities, it is the perfect destination. A one-hour boat trip along the Yen stream passing
by tranquil villages and rice paddy fields to visit the temples will be an unforgettable
experience. Unsurprisingly, this picturesque area becomes a rich source of inspiration
for artists, poets and composers as well. Its beauty has been depicted through many
famous paintings, poems and songs. The Perfume Pagoda is known as a sacred place
of Buddhist worship. Annually, it attracts large numbers of pilgrims from across the
country during its festival (from the middle of January to the middle of March on the
lunar calendar).

The tremendous changes in the Ha Noi tram system

Like other big cities in Asia, Ha Noi began to operate the tram system in the early
1900s. A few years later, due to its cheap fares and convenience, this system rapidly
became one of the most popular means of transport. There were five tram routes with
Hoan Kiem Lake as a central station for residents to get around the city and to the
suburban areas. However, because of the population boom and the urgent demand for
upgrading the more modern road system, the rail tracks were gradually removed and
completely disappeared in 1990. In the minds of Hanoians, the simple but symbolic
trams, with their clanging sounds and “Xam” songs (northern Vietnamese traditional
music) performed directly in the trams have been seen as the reminders of the city’s
serene charm several decades ago.

These days, the fact that that the population of the capital has risen tremendously
results in a dramatic increase in the number of vehicles on the roads. To meet the

increasing travel demands and reduce troublesome traffic congestion, the first 13-
kilometre skytrain system, connecting Cat Linh and Ha Dong is launched and it is
expected to be completed by 2018. Each four-compartment skytrain with the length
of approximately 80 metres and the height of about 3.8 metres has a capacity of 1,362
passengers. Additionally, a new rail system including over eight kilometres of
skytrain rail and four kilometres of subway rail, which links Ha Noi Central Station to
Nhon, also has being built recently. The capacity of each skytrain in this efficient
high-speed rail system is roughly 1,200 passengers.

Eating Habits in the Indian Culture

A. The eating habits in the Indian culture are largely based on religion and tradition. A high-
vegetable diet often with no beef and generally no pork comes from the Hindu religion. Habits of
how and when food is consumed are also based on social traditions, and most families form their
particular habits around a combination of cultural and family traditions.
B. Most dishes feature meat or vegetables mixed with sauce and rice. Many Indians are
vegetarian, so eating habits are often based on a diet that excludes all meat. When meat is
incorporated in dishes, it is most commonly in the form of chicken, beef or lamb, and sometimes
seafood, such as prawns. The majority of the Indian population is Hindu, so beef and pork are
often excluded from Indian dishes due to religious requirements.

C. There are three main meals in the Indian culture, so the meal timing is similar to Western
traditions. In India, most people eat a morning meal, a mid-day meal and an evening meal. The
evening meal is generally the biggest meal of the day, followed by the mid-day meal. Any time
curries and rice are not being eaten, bread, fruits and vegetables are consumed.

D. Meals are most often eaten with family members. Indian families create their eating habits
around the schedules and preferences of everyone in the family. Women traditionally do most of
the food preparation for the household.

ZALO: 0964189109 34
tri viet junior – TING ANH THCS
E. Cutlery is not traditionally used to eat food in the Indian culture. Food is meant to be a whole
sensory experience. An eating habit in the traditional Indian culture is to consume Indian foods
such as curry, rice and naan bread by picking it up using the hands. Bread is often used to scoop
up the curry sauce and rice, and it is dipped into traditional soups such as daal, a lentil-based
soup. Indian people are supposed to eat with their right hands, because eating with the left hand
is sometimes considered to be unclean.

Venice – The City of Love

A. Venice is a beautiful city located in northeast Italy that is famous for its intricate transport
system of interconnected canals. It has been described as the most beautiful city built by man and
one of Europe’s most romantic cities. Venice is also known for its art, architecture and culture.
So you’ll never be short of something to do in the “City of Bridges”.
B. First, do a bit of sightseeing by taking a romantic sunset gondola ride down the Grand Canal
that will take you through the heart of the city and let you soak up the relaxing atmosphere. The
canal is lined with beautiful buildings and churches some of which date back as far as the 13th
century. You’ll also see the Rialto Bridge that was the only bridge to cross the canal until the
19th century and was mentioned in Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice”. You could also
visit Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari which is one of the greatest churches in Venice.
C. In the evening, immerse yourself in culture by going to Musica a Palazzo, a Venetian Palace
from the 15th century which holds intimate opera performances of various operas such as La
Traviata. As the opera progresses you also get a tour of the house as each act is performed in a
different room. This unique tour is a must see for both first timers and opera fanatics. The
setting of the vintage palace makes it all the more romantic.

D. Treat yourself to dinner in the Trattoria alla Madonna, Michelin starred restaurant in the
centre of the city serving traditional Venetian fair and specializing in seafood. All ingredients are
fresh as they are sourced from the local markets each morning. The restaurant is also decorated
with paintings by contemporary Italian artists and as it’s a family run restaurant, it has a very
romantic atmosphere.

ZALO: 0964189109 40

E. The only other thing you need is a place to stay – how about Dona Palace Hotel, a chic
boutique hotel? It’s in a great location just minutes away from all the sightseeing hot spots but it
also keeps an air of calmness and privacy. It’s a romantic stay at a reasonable price. An excellent
alternative is the Bellini Boscolo Hotel Venice overlooking the Grand Canal. This delightful
hotel is the perfect base to discover the beautiful city of Venice. Easy to reach, the Bellini is just
a few minutes’ walk from Saint Mark’s Square, the heart of the city, in an area abounding in
shops and restaurants.

II. Reading
English as a Global Language
1. English is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is the first language of
more than 350 million people living in Britain, Ireland, the USA, Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. It is also the second language of more than 430
million people living in other parts of the world. Furthermore, English is increasingly
learned by people worldwide as a third or fourth language.
2. English has achieved dominant status over a long period of time for various
reasons. From the 16th to 19th centuries, the geographical expansion of the colonies
and international trade by the British Empire led to the spread of the English language
across continents, from South Asia and Asia Pacific, to Africa, the Middle East, and
Australia. Next, the emergence of the US as a global leader in almost every field
ranging from business, science and technology to entertainment and sports, is one of
the main reasons why English commands such global influence even today.
Additionally, English is the preferred language at international organisations such as
the United Nations and European Union, especially during diplomatic exchanges
between political leaders of countries. Besides, most of the content created for
websites is in English. Hence, to utilise the power of the internet to research
information, it is highly advisable that people can use English with a good level of
fluency.
3. As of today, English is recognised as a lingua franca or the common language
spoken by people of other languages. While it is hard to say which languages will be
popular in the future, it is estimated that by the year 2050 the French language will be
the most spoken language in the world. However, English is expected to retain its top
spot as the language that bridges communication barriers between people from
diverse linguistic backgrounds.

II. Reading

A. What Is a Spacewalk? Any time an astronaut gets out of a vehicle while in space, it is called a
spacewalk. A spacewalk is also called an EVA. EVA stands for extravehicular activity. The first
person to go on a spacewalk was Alexei Leonov. He was from Russia. The first spacewalk was
on March 18, 1965. It was 10 minutes long. The first American to go on a spacewalk was Ed
White. His spacewalk was on June 3, 1965, during the Gemini 4 mission.White's spacewalk
lasted 23 minutes. Today, astronauts go on spacewalks outside the International Space Station.
Spacewalks usually last between five and eight hours, depending on the job.
B. Why Do Astronauts Go on Spacewalks? Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons.
Spacewalks let astronauts work outside their spacecraft while still in space. Astronauts can do
science experiments on a spacewalk. Experiments can be placed on the outside of a spacecraft.
This lets scientists learn how being in space affects different things. Spacewalks also let
astronauts test new equipment. They can repair satellites or spacecraft that are in space. By going
on spacewalks, astronauts can fix things instead of bringing them back to Earth to fix.
C. How Do Astronauts Go on Spacewalks? When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear
spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen they need to
breathe. They have the water they need to drink. Astronauts put on their spacesuits several hours
before a spacewalk. The suits are pressurized. This means that the suits are filled with oxygen.
Once in their suits, astronauts breathe pure oxygen for a few hours.Breathing only oxygen gets
rid of all the nitrogen in an astronaut's body. If they didn't get rid of the nitrogen, the astronauts
might get gas bubbles in their body when they walked in space. These gas bubbles can cause
astronauts to feel pain in their shoulders, elbows, wrists and knees. This pain is called getting
"the bends" because it affects the places where the body bends. Scuba divers can also get "the
bends."Astronauts are now ready to get out of their spacecraft. They leave the spacecraft through
a special door called an airlock. The airlock has two doors. When astronauts are inside the
spacecraft, the airlock is airtight so no air can get out. When astronauts get ready to go on a
spacewalk, they go through the first door and lock it tight behind them. They can then open the
second door without any air getting out of the spacecraft. After a spacewalk, astronauts go back
inside through the airlock.

Teachers of 2030

Despite the fear that the teaching profession might lose its significance due to the rapid
growth of technology and the Internet, we must understand the importance of a person in a
classroom environment who is emotionally intelligent and knows how to guide children to
channel their energy and facilitate learning.

Here are some of the traits that can help teachers to stay equipped with the evolving time:

1. Embracng technology

Kids today are tech-driven from a very tender age. The education system too is transforming
with the help of technology. Thus, it is important for teachers to embrace technology
wholeheartedly and be part of this global academic transformation.

2. Being a learner for life

Being a learner for life is an essential part of modern education. Therefore, facilitators need
to have a positive approach when it comes to learning. Teachers of 2030 will hopefully be
more flexible and open to new ideas and learning.

3. Being a guide and facilitator

Content knowledge is easily accessible to students even today. The practice of availing
information from the internet will be more in the coming decade . Thus, the teacher’s role will no
longer be limited to providing information to students but helping them find out the right
information from a lot of data.

ZALO: 0964189109 56
tri viet junior – TING ANH THCS
4. Not staying restricted to classrooms

Learning can never be restricted to a classroom. Many years ago, Rabindranath Tagore talked
about a learning system that encourages a child to learn from everything around them - starting
from nature, people, animals, books etc. The future of education is going to be the same with the
greater accessibility of data. Thus, it will be important for both learners and facilitators to have
an open mind and flexibility for learning.

5. Imparting knowledge with the help of experience

It is difficult to transmit and articulate knowledge only through technological means. Facilitators
have personal experience and insight gained over the years. The role of a future educator will be
more of a facilitator who can enrich learners with their own experiences during the process of
imparting knowledge.

2030 will definitely be a technologically-advanced year with better content accessibility.

Therefore, the responsibility of teachers will not be restricted to imparting knowledge but
helping learners to become life-ready and accumulate all the skills that are essential for life in
general.

Fill in each blank with one word from the reading text. (Điền vào mỗi chỗ trống 1 từ có trong
bài đọc).

1. Despite the boom of technology, it is necessary to know the importance of teachers who are
emotionally and can guide students to learn in the right way.

2. Not only the education but also teachers will have to change to fit the new
situation.

3. It is expected that of 2030 will be more flexible and open-minded about new
ideas and learning.

4. Apart from information, teachers need to help students to find out the accurate
information from a lot of data on the Internet.

5. Students can learn from around them such as nature, people, animals, books or
anything like that.

6. Teachers need to make use of their own and technological means to help their
students
