Pressure notes

pressure is the force per unit area

P=F (N) / A or Nm-2

unit: pascal or pa

● weight = mass x gravitational field strength / N=mg

calculate the pressure under a girls feet if her mass is 50kg the area of her shoes in contact with
the ground is 2.00 cm2

weight=mg

weight= 50 x 10 = 500 N

1 cm2= 0.0001 m2

20 x 0.0001 = 0.002 m2

pressure= 500/0.002 =250 000 Pa

a rectangular box 20 cm by 10 cm by 5 cm has a density of 2.00 gcm3. determine the max and
min pressure exerted by the block when it is placed on one face

use density formula

use weight formula

Pressure in Liquids
earth's gravitational field strength acts on all objects therefore liquids also have weight exerting
pressure on an object placed in it

in liquids, the amount of pressure depends on the perpendicular depth, and the density of the
liquid

it does not depend on the volume or area of the liquid

In pascals vase, the pressure at the bottom is the same despite the changing volume and area,
because pressure only depends on the depth of the liquid and density

pressure in liquids = phg (density, depth, gravitational field strength)

Pascal's law

Pascal's law states that when there is an increase in pressure at any point in a confined fluid,
there is an equal increase at every other point in the container.

F/A=F/A

a force of 20 N is applied to the small piston. if the area on the small piston is 0.1 m2 and area
of large piston is 2m2, calculate the force generated at the large piston

0.1/20=x/2

0.1 x 2 = 20x

0.2/20 = x
