Deploy Operation
The T/R deploys when the reverse thrust lever is raised to the reverse idle detent. The
T/R control switch in the thrust lever energizes the sync-lock solenoid to unlock the
synchronizing flex shaft. The T/R control switch (microswitch pack) completes a
circuit to the Hydraulic Isolation Valve (HIV). This opens the isolation valve, which
provides hydraulic pressure to the Directional Control Valve (DCV) and on to the
stow tube. Pressure is now applied to the stow side of the six actuators and the Sync
Lock is unlocked. At the same time, a mechanical linkage attached to the strut drum
positions the DCV to deploy.
This provides hydraulic pressure to the deploy tube and to the deploy side of the 6
actuators. This pressure is used to unlock the two locking actuators and move the
translating cowl aft to position the blocker doors (not shown) and uncovers the
cascade segments to direct the fan exhaust in the forward direction. A flex shaft
inside the deploy tube synchronizes the movement of the actuators.
Feedback actuators position interlock cams to permit further movement of the reverse
thrust levers to increase power when the translating cowls are approx 50% deployed.

Stow Operation
The thrust reverser stows when the reverse thrust lever is moved down to the
idle detent. The DCV is repositioned to stow and removes pressure from the
deploy side of the actuators. The T/R switch (in the microswitch pack)
opens but an auto re-stow circuit keeps the HIV open until the reversers are
fully stowed, plus 5 seconds. This Time Delay verifies the T/R is fully
stowed and locked prior to the removal of Hydraulic Pressure.

The T/R switch (in the thrust lever) opens and de-energizes the sync-lock
solenoid.

When both translating cowls are fully stowed, the HIV closes and removes
hydraulic power from the actuators and sync-lock. With stow pressure
removed, the sync-lock locks the synchronizing shaft.

Feedback actuators position interlock cams to prevent movement of the

forward thrust levers to increase power until the translating cowls are almost
in the stow position.

Synchronization Flex Shaft
Located inside the deploy tube.
This shaft (cable) is used to keep
all 6 actuators in sync during
thrust reverser movement.

Sync Lock Operation
When the solenoid is energized (switch
in throttle), the pin retracts and releases
the piston. With the HIV open (switch in
micro-switch pack), stow pressure
pushes the piston against the spring to
translate the piston through the pivoting
linkage, the static serrated disk moves
away from the rotating serrated disk and
unlocks the synchronizing shaft allowing
it to rotate.

Unlocked by:
1. Lock Pin Removal and
2. Stow Pressure

Troubleshooting Tips (continued)

BITE Check PSEU

Either sleeve / sensor will give amber REV.
* STBY Power in “AUTO” Note: Unlock sensors should be “Near” with T/R stowed.

Note: Deploy sensors should be “Near” with T/R fully

deployed.

* - Standby Power switch in Off will cause Left Engine amber

REV to be displayed on EICAS.

micro-switch pack see stow command from flight deck.
30 second time delay prevents nuisance messages.

“REV ISLN VALVE” EICAS message
• Possible causes:
– Bad Pressure Switch (on isolation valve)
– Solenoid failure (on isolation valve)
– Isolation Valve internal failure
– S21 Left or S22 Right out of adjustment (in switch pack)
– T/R Stow Relay faulty
– Short to ground between pressure switch and EICAS
computer
– Auto Re-Stow circuit fault or sensor out of adjustment
– Bad 30 second after stow relay (if message appears
immediately after T/R stows)
