Lesson topic: Music element pulse/beat

Grade: 2
Length of lesson: 30 minutes

Lesson Outcomes: Learners will be able to demonstrate to the class a constant beat.
Learners will be able to identify a constant or steady beat. Lastly learners will be able
to define what is a beat.

Resources needed: A plastic bowl

A pencil

Song about beat from a YouTube video

A chart of bridge pictures

Lesson Introduction: I will start my lesson by asking the learners if they know what a
beat is. If they do, they will then demonstrate to me what they know a beat to be. I
will then define what a beat is. What’s a beat? A beat is a steady sound. A steady
sound is a beat that does not change. Therefore, it stays the same. I am going to
introduce the 1 2 hand gestures and get them to feel the beat. Each learner will put
their one hand out and with their other hand they will use two fingers to hit the palm
of their hands on the beat of 1 2. We will do this repeatedly as a class. Once
everyone has perfected the 1 2 beats, I will introduce the song I wrote to go with the
1 2 hand gesture. Please find the song on annexure A. Through this exercise I will
be talking the learners through it.

Lesson Development: Now that the learners have felt what a beat feels like. Each
learner will take out their plastic bowl and spoon which they would have brought from
home. Please see annexure B for an example. We will use the bowl and spoon as an
instrument to create the 1 2 constant beat. First, we will practise our 1 2 beats with
the song from annexure A which they would already be familiar with. We will do this
for 2 minutes. Once we are done with that, I will play the action song from YouTube
called rhythm stick beat song which is in annexure C. First, I will play the song for the
learners to listen. Once they have listened, I will illustrate the moves and they will
copy my actions. We will still be using the 1 2 constant beat.

Lesson Consolidation: I will ask the learners again what a beat is, to see if they have
grasped the definition through our actions. The learners will also be asked, who
knows how to make their own beat. Through this will be to see if the beat they are
making is different to the one we used in the lesson and if it is constant beat.

I will take out a chart that has bridges all the same size. Please see annexure D. we
will use this chart to see if they can follow the beat of the song London bridge is
falling down. For every word they will point at the bridge, until the song is done. Due
to time, we will only sing and follow the chorus of the song.
