CE 76/2019 (CE) IMPROVEMENT WORKS AT LEUNG SHUEN WAN PIER, SHAM CHUNG PIER AND SAM MUN TSAI VILLAGE PIER DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION (SAM MUN TSAI VILLAGE) MARINE GROUND INVESTIGATION (GI) FINAL FIELD WORK REPORT 1 INTRODUCTION In March 2019, Lam Geotechnies Limited was awarded a thirty months Term Contract (GE/2018/10) to carry out marine ground investigation and geophysical surveys for Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of Civil Engineering and Development Department. The Contract Area for the works is within any location within Hong Kong including Hong Kong Waters, up to high water mark and on inland waterways, accessible from the sea, The works consist of ground investigation over water or from scaffolding over shallow water. The overall scope of the Contract primarily includes taking disturbed and undisturbed common ground samples, obtaining cores (both rock and man-made materials) and all reporting as required by the Engineer. This report details the ground investigation carried out for Task Order No. GE/2018/10.22B issued under the Contract. The site was located at Sam Mun Tsai Village and consisted of 6 nos. of marine drillholes. The fieldwork was carried out between 3rd June 2021 and 17 June 2021 under the supervision of Civil Engineering and Development Dapartment. 2. THE SITE The site is located at Sam Mun Tsai Village. (See Contract Data Summary). Easting Northing A 839900 835000 B 840200 835200 ic 840200 835000 D 839900 835200 ‘The positions of the individual investigation stations are indicated on Investigation Stations Location Plan included in Appendix 5. "TASK ORDER NO, GEADINT02IB T LAM GEOTECHNICS LIMITED. 3. GEOLOGY The 1:20000 scale HGM 20 series geological map of Hong Kong Sheet 7 (Sha Tin — Edition TI, 2008) indicates that the site is underlain by Quaternary mud blanked. ‘According to the findings of the GI works, bedrock of the site is porphyritic medium — and fine-grained granodiorite, which is overlaid by MARINE DEPOSIT and ALLUVIUM. ‘A summary of the strata encountered in driliholes is given in Table 2. A brief description for the drilloles is given below. For a full description of the materials encountered reference should be made to the individual records given in Appendix 3. Materials encountered are given below. Marine Deposit was encountered in all drillholes, which comprised sandy fine to coarse GRAVELS with shell fragments/ slightly clayey fine to coarse SAND with shell fragments/ coral fragments. Alluvium was encountered in drillhole no. SMT-BH1, which comprised GRAVELS. Completely decomposed GRADODIORITE was encountered in all drillholes, which ‘comprised sandy clayey SILT. Highly/ moderately / slightly decomposed GRANODIORITE was encountered in all drillholes. 4, FIELDWORK Marine drilling operations are conducted from purpose built jack-up barge. ‘The jack- up barge is equipped with one drilling rig, four supporting legs. The jack-up are supported by tugboat (for moving and positioning) and if necessary, a general purposed transport vessel, generally an attendant boat. 4.1 SETTING OUT ‘The jack-up barge was anchored with its legs jacked down on the sea floor upon arrival at the proposed location, Setting out of the barge at the investigation station location was undertaken by electronic (DGPS) method. Seabed levels to Principal Datum were determined by relating plate soundings to tide levels obtained from nearest Tide Gauge at Tai Po Kau. The co-ordinates and levels of each investigation station were summarized in Table 1 42 INVESTIGATOIN STATIONS. 4.2.1 Drillholes "TASK ORDER NO. GEAOIST0226 z LAM GEOTECHNICS LIMITED Six drillholes (SMT-BH1 to SMT-BH6) were carried out at the locations agreed with the Engincer and shown on the enclosed Investigation Stations Location Plan (Appendix 5). ‘The co-ordinates and reduced seabed levels of the drillholes are given in Table 1. The drillhole records are presented in Appendix 3. Undisturbed mazier samples were taken at required depths as instructed. Mazier samples were taken by using triple tube retractable core barrel fitted with one metre long rigid clear ABS plastic liner tube to retain the samples. Undisturbed U100 samples were taken in specific drillholes at required depths as instructed. Small-disturbed samples were obtained from the cutting shoe of samplers. All sampling was reported at the relevant depths on the drillhole records. ‘The drillholes were advanced through common ground by rotating Px (140mm diameter) and Hx (115mm diameter) drill casing using seawater as the flushing medium. The drillholes were then advanced through highly to moderately decomposed rock and better, by using T6-116 and/or T2-101 double tube core barrels with diamond drill bits. 96mm (T6-116) and 84mm (2-101) diameter cores were recovered within the inner stationary tube of the core barrels, and brought to the surface. The rock core was then hydraulically extruded from the core barrel and arranged in proper sequence in the core boxes with dividers marking the start and finish of each core run, 4.2.2. Rock and Soil Descriptions Rock and Soil descriptions are in accordance with the general principles given in Geoguide 3: ‘Guide to Rock and Soil Descriptions’ (GEO 2017) and the checklists are included in Appendix 1. The descriptive terms for the additional constituents in composite soil types are as follows: “with occasional’ for less than 5% additional materials “with some’ for between 5% and 20% additional materials “with much’ for between 20% and 50% additional materials Soil descriptions and delineation of strata on the drillhole records were based primarily on the examination of samples obtained during drilling and, to a lesser extent, on the daily site records. Non-destructive logging techniques have been employed in the preparation of rock descriptions. 4.2.3. Photography Photographs of all the drillholes are included in Appendix 4. The reference board shown in the photographs given details of the photographs contents, "TASK ORDER NO. GHA0IST0225 3 LAM GEOTECHNICS LIMITED Where small disturbed samples and rock cores are present in the same box the container lids have been removed prior to photography to display the disturbed samples. The board in the drillhole photograph gives the depth range of the ossified cement grout/rock cores displayed in that box, but only where core run depths coincide with the start and finish of the rock contained in a particular core box. The depth has been put in brackets if it is not the start or end of a core run, For details of the small disturbed sample depths, reference should be made to the individual drillhole records. 43 FIELD TESTS 43.1 Standard Penetration Tests Standard penetration tests were carried out in all drillholes as specified in accordance with BS EN ISO 22476-3:2005: Geotechnical investigation and testing — Field testing (Part 3 : Standard penetration test). SPT Liner samples were recovered by means of an aluminium tube of 35mm nominal diameter placed within the SPT split barrel sampler. The ‘N’ value is recorded as the sum of the number of blows required to drive the split spoon through the final 300mm of the test. If the full penetration of the test drive is not achieved after 100 blows of the drive hammer, the number of blows and the penetration achieved (in mm) will be recorded and the test terminated. TASK ORDER NO. GEAUIAO228 7 LAM GEOTECHNICS LIMITED 5. DIGITAL RECORDS 5.1 METHOD Both the preliminary and final logs have been produced using gINT (Windows version 8.20), a commercially available software package capable of providing the ground investigation data in ASCII digital format. The data is provided in uncompressed format on a CD-ROM submitted with the Final Field Work Report. The data file format complies with the third edition of the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) publication “Electronic Transfer of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Data”, published in November 1999. The usage of the AGS data format shall follow the recommendation of the “AGS Digital Data Format — Recommendations of Usage in Hong Kong” dated March 2002, prepared by AGS Format Subcommittee of the Association of Geotechnical Specialists (HK) Ltd. ‘A computer-generated graphics of the material code for log legend adopted for the contract are included in Appendix 2. 5.2. DATA INDEX ‘The media index record and the data disks are included in each original copy of the Final Field Work Report.
